At the end of AOTC Yoda calls it "Clone War", so why is it plural?

Maybe because it consists out of more battles?

Because fans have been calling it the Clone Wars since 1977 and there not about to change now.

In universe: I suppose Yoda, when he says that, doesn't know that it will be "worthy" of the title Wars, and calls it War. They didn't say "The Hundred Year Wars have begun!" or anything like that when they started - it's impossible to classify wars accuratley when they begin.

I would guess that because of the many planets that the war is being fought on, those are like warlings, so we have many small wars on planets. World War II would barely raise an eyebrow on Coruscant, but remember that these are battles that cover an entire planet.

It is called the Clone WarS because there are two wars fought in sucession. Republic and Jedi vs. Separatists and Republic vs. Jedi.

Heh. I wonder if in the DVD release, Obi Wan will say Clone War instead of Clone Wars.

Even with a change to the DVD the fact remains that it would still be Clone Wars thanks to the number of sources which give it as such.

As for the plural, I have found it to be easy to say it is do to the number of smaller wars occuring. You have the predominant clone war being fought between the Republic and the Separatists. Then you have the various civil wars erupting around the galaxy. With what we now know about this period, nder most circumstances it could have been simply been viewed as a time of war throughout the galaxy. However, it becomes the Clone Wars due to the fact that that both the Republic and the Separatists send forces to aid in the numerous local civil wars occuring throughout the galaxy. Because the Republic's aid comes in the form of clone troopers and their equipment, the local civil wars each become a war fought by clones. Though the locals are still fighting the war, because of the use of clones the war becomes one of the minor clone wars which are fought alongside the predominant one. Thus the period is the Clone Wars.

Does it matter? Wars rarely keep the name they had when they occurred.

Great War -> World War I

I imagine that people called it "Clone War" at the beginning, in the expectation it wouldn't be that widespread.

By the time of ANH, veterans have looked back on it as "The Clone Wars", in order to emphasise its expansive nature.

Commendable conjecture, indeed. Y'all gave it your best shot, but you see, there is another name. More insidious, some would say; vile I call it.

The Hardcover War. That most of the CW series seems to be. Also known as The Im/patience War.
