Why the heck does it get darker earlier in Southern California than in Northern California?

I'm watching this boxing match in Carson, Caifornia and it's been dark there for about a half hour, and it's still just getting there up here in Sacramento. This defies the meager skills of my brain to comprehend. Someone help me.

 

Also, SoCal is much further east than NorCal.

 

I think I learned this when I was 7.

They should just split into two separate states.

 

I think it has something to do with the fact that Lucasfilm is based in Northern California

 

It's all about the longitude... some states are longer than others.
