Actually, there are not even 50 states. Some of those states are actually commonwealths. Kentucky, for example.

They've been accepted as States since they've been part of the US for so long. And we created it on a swamp because we're stubborn jackasses. Which is actually a reason that we did a lot of things...

The land was initially part of Maryland, but was changed into a Federal district. Thus, the land it was built on ceased to by part of Maryland and became the District of Columbia.

Personally, I dislike the use of the name Washington for the city.

Yeah, Philadelphia used to be important, being the third biggest city in the country until the 1920's, the national capital, and many other things...now we're just a city with losing sports teams, a high city wage tax and a corrupt mayor.

However, this is in no way a bad indictment of where I'm from. ;)

P.S. Join the Philly FF you Philly people. :p [/end shameless plug]

Trell: Just because I simply think 'District of Columbia' sounds better than Washington.

I have no problems with them honoring our first president. It's merely a personal preference. :)

No, half of it isn't in VA or MD. The DC line stops on the VA and MD borders (GW bridge on the beltway, or Cleveland Park metro to the north).

Why you guys would build a capital city on a swamp is beyond me.

It didn't always stop at the river though. Arlington County, Virginia was originally part of DC, but it was returned to Virginia in 1846. Originally, DC was surveyed to be a square ten miles on each side.

    "taxation without representation"

That's what DC's lisence plates say

" All Philly had are bad sports teams"

Eagles and T.O. :D What kind of Philadelphian are you :p

    "Corrupt mayor"

    I second that

Until the Eagles can get past the NFC Championship game, they still have a stigma. My hearts been broken too many times in the past four years by the Eagles.

Corrupt mayor goes without saying though.

    Random sidenote involving DC.

When Washington was going to become a state, they wanted to call if Columbia at first, due to the Columbia River. However, they were not allowed to, because it was thought that it would be confuzed with District of Columbia.

So, they named it Washington, in honor of the first president.

Then Washington was added to the title of District of Columbia, making it Washington DC, and ruining everything.

I'd love to go to Washington DC. I think every American should, at least once. It's on my list of travels, along with all my other ventures, england, scotland, Paris France.
Next is New York, then Hawaii, and apparently Japan. Maybe I should see my own country for a change. :p

Yes. Unless the Eagles manage to finally do something this year.

I just did an assinment on Washington, he's an okay guy but you americans set him up as some kind of demi-god.

i was searching the Net for info and there is more stuff on his teeth than on the Consitutional convention, which is what my assigment was on.
