    Widescreen!

(I have a friend who actully returned the widescreen copy for a fullscreen when he found that he'd bought the wrong one. He doesn't like widescreen because it looks so small on his (~30 in.) TV.)

That is really disturbing. That size TV is ideal for widescreen. Mark my words though: he's going to feel like such a fool when widescreen TV's become standard and he's left with black bars on the side!

Which version did I buy? All of them. I am a freak like that. I will buy just about any little thing if it has the Star Wars logo on it, so why not all the different video devices that actually have the movie on them. As a psycho Star Wars freak, it is my duty. Besides, I will like having all six movies sitting side by side on a shelf in each of the different formats (which is why I am very upset there wasn't a widescreen VHS of AOTC released {and I'm sure never will be.}) Plus, my Mom is older and she can't do the widescreen, so it's nice to have the fullscreens available whenever I am feeling down and want to share one of my favorite movies with my dear mother.

Which version do I watch? Widescreen DVD (the only way to watch a movie at home.)

    Widescreen DVD, of course.

Besides, we only have Widescreen here (Switzerland). Isn't the Full Screen version only available in the USA?

Widescreen DVD of course. Full screen is ok if you've never seen the widescreen version. Other wise Widescreen is the only way to go.

Apparently in some Wal-Marts now they are promoting fullscreen DVD's with stickers saying "no black bars" or something stupid like that. I'm gonna laugh my head off when widescreen TV's become the norm and all these customers will be demanding a refund because their new TV's they got from Wal-Mart has black bars on the sides now.

Agreed. But that's also several years away (at least!). I know my familiy won't get a widescreen TV until the price drops or HDTV (widescreen) becomes the only choice, by law. Whichever comes first.

And this friend has the same contraints of money and it being optional. But eventually, I know we will not have a choice... (Not that that's neccessarily a bad thing...)

    I bought the widescreen dvd.

I buy the aspect ratio that the director intended for the motion picture. That would usually be "widescreen": 2.35:1 or 1.85:1

If I had to choose I would just have Widescreen. But there are advantages to the fullscreen version. Sure, you miss out on almost half of the image, but what is there is at a much higher resolution than the widescreen version. It's almost like getting the IMAX version without the cut scenes.

There are other movies that are actually shot in a full screen ratio, and then they crop that for the theatrical release. For example, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is like this. Let's just say that the VHS fullscreen release ends up being much better than the DVD widescreen release.

Hey, if that means you have the DVD, that deserves a bonus point for coolness :D

There is only one way: DVD.
VHS contains no additional material, then for me I am able to watch the movie with the original language and DVD is sharper.

With Fullscreen you have the picture full on the screen but you miss the little details which might be shown on the edge just for little seconds.

I'd strongly advise this friend of yours to at least buy SW DVD's in widescreen. Who knows? One day there might be new edits of the Prequels that ruin the films and they won't be available in their original format and edits. Reminds me of another problem we have right now....

There's no arguement anymore that Fullscreen is acceptable. It's simply not. When you buy a fullscreen movie, you are being ripped off. It's like purchasing a CD and not having the album mixed properly. Say in one song the drums are cut out, another the vocals are missing, etc. When you watch fullscreen you're nt paying for the whole movie. Therefore you are being ripped off.

I will only buy SW in WIDESCREEN DVD...can't wait for the "Archive Edition" with all 6 episodes!

I used to work at "Suncoast" during the holidays. And you would not believe how many "weak-minded" people would return perfectly good DVDs...because they didn't like "the black lines" on their screen. Some people just don't understand/care that when they are buying FULL SCREEN movies, you are losing part of the picture. And GL uses every inch of the movie screen to tell his story...so "pan and SCAM" full screen movies are like going about your day with blinders on either side of your face; you don't see everything there. (even if your TV screen is filled...your only getting part of the picture.

You don't need a widescreen TV to watch a widescreen movie (although I'm very happy my dad bought a widescreen TV...watching AOTC DVD on a digital TV is a beautiful thing!!!

Just wondering about this. Some movies give you the option on The DVD to watch it in in full or widescreen. Why can't all Movies do this instead of having to seperate DVD's?? Does having wide and full on the same DVD cut down on quality?

I'm no expert but I don't think it cuts down on quality. I have noticed with some DVD's I've rented that they put both versions on either side of the disc, good idea. (I guess if the movie has any length to it, both can't be put on the same side)

But I kind of like GL doing both versions the way he did, this way we get the movie the way we want with the graphic on the back of the disc (you loose that with the double sided idea) and we SW fans like whatever extras we can get!

DVDs do not have unlimited space. You can only fit about four hours on a single side with a dual layer and two or three audio tracks. The more you try to squeeze onto a single side, the greater the compression, and the worse the quality. Notice that the movies that contain both P&S and widescreen on the same side tend to be short movies.

I'd rather have widescreen and fullscreen on separate discs. If they share the same disc, there is no place for the artwork. Personally, I think companies shouldn't waste their time making fullscreen versions. People need to accept widescreen as THE format for DVD and get on with their lives. It really irks me when people say widescreen shows less of a picture than the fullscreen version. I ask them how would they fit a picture of The Last Supper into a square picture frame? Is it okay to toss some Disciples out the window?
