That financial report contradicts one issued a few weeks ago, so I'm a bit confussed really.
Also, in said article ,it states:
' For the year to 31 March 2006, the Japanese games console maker made an operating profit of 90bn yen ($799m; £427m), down from 112bn yen.'

    and then:
'Annual net profit rose 12.5% to 98bn yen, but that was thanks in part to a large currency gain.'

Sounds a bit odd to me :p
Anyone know the difference between operating profit and annual net profit??
That said, they are still making several hundred billion Yen more profit then Sony and Microsoft.

I reckon the Wii will cost between £150-200 here. Probably closer to £150 but either way, sounds like as great deal to me, yay!!

£150 is probably what I would expect now, what with the Uk always getting a marked up price (Just check out PS3 price in Euros, and you see the UK price is about £10 more). But I also wouldn't rule out £130, that was the launch price of the gamecube, and the spokesmen is said to say 'and lower' which is always something to give hope for the strain on the pocket.

    LMAO at obvious sony bias.

Please people try the new consoles before you get them. I'll be getting a Wii purely because it is cheap and offers a completely new way of playing games.

PS3=PS2 but with prettier graphics. Graphics do not a good game make.

What GG1 said is true, the PS3 will indeed release excrement just like that that comes from Sony's bosses. On a serious note, even the Sony boss of Europe knows their loyal customers are mugs. In an interview he said they will easily sell the first 5 million PS3s even if it had no games out for it, purly because it has Sony written onit. Do you really want to give £425 to people like that who clearly don't care at all about the games industry or its customers??

And if the PS3 is soooo good, why did they feel the need to rip-off the Wii's tilt sensors, hmmm? :p

Anyway, the GC boys also doubt the Wii will be £119 (the price converted from the Yen figure) but seeming as Nintendo said it will cost no more then that, I think £150 is about right :D

I don't like the idea of these tilt sensors. Sounds like people are trying to make me excercise while playing games. Now that goes against the grain for me!

That's a fair bit cheaper than I was expecting to be honest. I was expecting to and willing to pay up to £200 for one. I'm not complaining that it's more than likely to be cheaper though. :D

I thought the cube was more than £130 on release? I remember saving up for it, I've been under the impression that it was £200.

    LOL

And Mr Onion, I was pretty sure it was £130 as I remember reading about the price and was going to wait for one, but when I saw the price I just thought "Damn, that is cheap, I am getting me one". But to make sure I was remembering rightly I looked it up. Here you are.

That shows that we are both right, as something I didn't remember, they did actually cut the price before it was released, hence why it was so cheap.

Also, Tice talking about the interview with the Sony man is very spot on. They know that the thing will sell no matter what, espically in Europe, the home of the casual gamer who will only want a sony system with the latest fifa street and need for speed. But yet people like GG1 are simply been a bit silly, because as yet we have seen nothing much in the way of the games of the PS3. We have a launch date, but no launch titles, what about the tilt functions in the controller? How long is that going to take to be utilised? We know warhawk, the only game to be developed to use it so far will not be out for launch, and all other studios didn't even know about the controller and many complaining they are recieving no support from Sony. If any games do use it on launch, it won't be very convincing because of how rushed it will be. It will also need an impressive launch line up to even tempt me to part with that much cash, but so far none of the games really tempt me that much at all. MGS4 is even boring in the trailer.

The Wii on the other hand has shown off the games well, and have have impressive write ups thoughout E3. Not without critisism though, Zelda was meant to be hard been to percise on the aiming for example. But most are small things that could well be fixed before release. No launch date as yet, but plans to of shipped 6million units by March, the same figure Sony intend for the PS3 by March, puts into mind a launch date that will be competing with the PS3. I don't know if they will go for the worldwide option, Microsoft had huge problems pulling it off and I don't expect for sony to pull it off either, considering most launches have had glitches on the one region launch most times. In fact the only reason I would think of getting a PS3 on launch is to resell on Ebay. Anyway, with the facts I am going to take a stab at October release, I seem to remember Zelda having been put back till then. Slightly earlier then the PS3 to give it an advantage, with a launch line up that includes Zelda it will sell a lot with the low price tag. It will also mean the when the PS3 comes it will be facing stiff competition, the already established Xbox360, with a large catalouge of games and some impressive games set to come out (doubtful Halo3 will make it, but I sure as hell think they will try hard to put it against the PS3 launch) and the Wii having the launch title and the second wave titles comings out, it would certinaly make an interesting battle.

Anyway, too many words. In summery, Burt said it better in a shorter way.

I haven't really gotten into the MGS series, but many (including the designer of MGS) say that the Splinter Cell series is superior, so MGS wont be a killer app for the PS3 imo. It does have some good exclusives (Virtual Fighter 4, and the Final Fantasy series which again has never floated my boat), but then again the 360 has some very impressive exclusives too, so for those two it's fairly even steven's. And most of the PS3 so called killer aps were only in trailer form during E3, meaning that they could be years off and shown with pre-rendered graphics.
    .
As for the Wii though, it will have the traditional Nintendo gems and with some exclusives from big third party publishers too, it wont miss out on the action either. And with Konami on-board, it could well have a decent footie game too.
And yes, the GC was slashed down in price mere days before its release. Argh, I remember it well.

It's also worth noting that Warhawk was more of a tech. demo then a game demo, and so far only Namco have suggested they will use the tilt sensor for Tekken, showing real guts and imagination by waving the controller around to free yourself from a grab move, and that's about it!! :p

Nintendo would also like a world-wideish release for the Wii, so here's hoping we wont have to wait too long. Considering the DS lite will arrive here soon after the US get it, the signs are good that Nintendo will be taking the UK and Europe seriously now.

Nah, MGS has gone from a great game with a few to many cut scences to an interactive film. I have borrowed MGS3, still have it, and have twice tried to start it, and twice I sat there for two hours playing it. The thing is in that two hours I actually played 10 minutes of the game. 10 minutes. Really, I can't be hassled with that, and having a game that bores you senseless in the first few minutes is bad design. I got a DVD from Edge from the Toyko Game Show and me and me mates tried to watch the MGS4 trailer, and it wasn't long before two of me mates were fighting with each other, and me and the other lad was talking about something altogether different. So I don't think they will even let you have control in this one.

And Tice, I do hope you are right about Nintendo taking Europe seriously, but I feel we will still be getting the raw end of the stick.

The Wii will be out in the US on November 19th, costing the equivalent of £133. Two weeks later it'll be released in Japan for £113. Wii Sports will also be packaged with the console, and the cost of games should be the same as the current Gen (around £40) while downloads will ranges from £2.50-£5.

    Here's a proper press-release:
"Nintendo will launch its Wii home video game console in the U.S on 19 November, followed by other countries.

The gaming console will be sold as an affordable, mass-consumer product, and the price tag will start at US$249.99. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk controller and a collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc.

Every Wii console includes a series of on-screen "channels" that make up the Wii Channel Menu. The Wii Channel Menu is the starting point for all of the console's functions. The "channels" offer a gateway to a variety of entertainment options.

When connected to a TV, the Wii Channel Menu offers a simple interface, letting users pick games to play, get news or weather, view and send photos or even create playable caricatures of themselves to use in actual games. Additional functions allow users to redeem Wii Points and download classic games to Wii's Virtual Console.

Wii comes with a unique control system, whose position can be detected in a 3-D space. The new controller allows users to pinpoint targets in games or move through the Wii Channel Menu. With this one small controller, Wii makes games both easier and more intense than anything previously experienced. For example, in the Wii Sports tennis game, players swing the Wii Remote like a racket to hit the ball, as in real life. They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match.

Additional information about the list of Virtual Console games and the pricing structure will be revealed in the coming weeks."

Nintendo UK have their press confrence today, so we'll find out when we'll get it and how much it'll set us back. Here's hoping for a November release and something in-line with the US and Japanese price, I'll be happy with £175.

    It's now official:

Great news, just about made my £175 price tag wish. Wii Sports as a packaged game is a brilliant bonus too, plus all the other features the Wii has (channels, digital photo editing etc) this is brilliant news!! :D

I'd rather say the Wii will be different to the 360 and PS3, not better or worse. And because it's cheaper to run (i.e cheaper games, free on-line service and very cheap downloads), it's more then possible to have both consoles if you so wish. Wii comes first but I like the idea of owning a 360 at some point too.

I suspect pre-orders will start this weekend. I might pre-order very soon, just need to decide from whom to make my purchase :D

As much as that price tag sounds appealing, are there gonna be any decent games for this thing? And will I have to use the Wiimote? Can I have just a regular, cable connected controller?

There will be loads of games for it and yet a good proportion will requite the Wiimote.

that being said there is to be a case for the Wiimote that enables it to be used like the standard GC controller and there is also the Nunchuk analogue stick which enables it to be a more flexible controller.

Everyone who has used the Wiimote so far has said its fantastic though.

don't create a hangup on a system based around the controller (Unless it's the dreamcast)
