I REALLY enjoyed this film. Probably one of the top 5 sequels that I've ever seen.

BTW did anybody get the connection between Davey and the Witch. I thought that they both had the same locket, hopefully I'm not delusional.

And this is why I NEVER listen to people who trash movies. I ABSOLUTELY loved it!! It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I was so incredibly shocked at the endng. What a rush.

Overall I thought the movie was fantastic. The begining did seem to drag a bit but as it got moving I loved itt more and more. The Kraken looked pretty cool although I thought Davy Jones sounded a bit wierd at first. The last few minutes of the film set up the third one, so you know Jack will be back. It was interesting to see Barbosa return at the end, I wonder how they'll explain it [if they do].

I just got back from it and it left me feeling....FLAT. This movie lacks the fun and heart the first one had. In fact I called my sister and told her to wait and see it on DVD and to go to Supes instead.

First of all its entirely too damn long. Secondly you cant friggen watch the movie because of all the **** going on in the damn thing. I swear it must have 5 damn subplots. Whomever did the writing dropped the ball BIG TIME. The special effects are marvelous but again there are way too many. Someone along the lines the writers lost sight of the old adage that less is more. Gone are the subtle little jokes and gone is the "innocence" for lack of a better word of the original. In all honesty, the biggest laughs I got where from the two guys that were the bad pirates in the first movie. Now they were funny. Its not a bad movie, but I definitely will NOT pay money to see it again. I'll rent it, but I highly doubt I buy it. In my book the first movie was a 10, this one only gets a 6.5-7 out of me. I think it will have a bigger opening weekend than Supes did, but I dont think its going to be good for the long haul simply because it wont do the repeat business of the original.

    My absolute favorite part:

    "Elizabeth!"

    *turns to the other guy*

    "Hide the rum!"

It's a shame, really. All the funniest lines were in the trailers and TV spots.[face_plain]

Nah the best line was: "Look- an undead monkey. Top that."

Got back from seeing an 11 PM showing (because everything else was sold out at the various theaters around me)- and, first off, it was sweet to see the Transformers teaser on the big screen (and, sitting as close as I was forced to due to arriving to find a line circling the theater's parking lot, having it completely envelope my vision) as was the huge ovation it got.

Anyways, to the actual film- the start does drag at times, but i absolutely love the sheer giddyness of the humor within the action sequences (the whole three way duel on the wheel, etc). The FX and action are solid and Davey Jones is just such a creepy villian- all the little nuances to the character made him so fantastic as a villian, EXCELLENT work there.

The film overall is pretty great- though since it kinda ends on a downnote cliffhanger to set up the third film (shy Barbossa's return, his line and the bite of the apple, which just gave me a huge smile on my face for my whole ride home) it lacks the happy ending and stand-alone nature of the origianl film's ending, so that might dissapoint some people. But I think, taken in context with the third film, it should pay off. So really, POTC3 is what will fully determine how good of an ending DMC has- if POTC3 is not that good, POTC2's ending would be for nothing. If it succeeds, it enriches the film.

Also, skeletons ar ecooler than sea creatures, but the sea creatures are still cool. not their fault skeletons rule. [face_skull]

I feel like writing a proper review of the film now that I've had a few days to think about it.

In 2003, the most surprising thing occurred. We were treated to a great swashbuckler, one that Errol Flynn would have been proud of. Most surprising about this was that it was based on a theme park ride, and was helmed by some of the most formulaic names in Hollywood. But there it was, The Curse of the Black Pearl; a hilariously self-effacing film that defied all expectations and led about as close to a cult following a mainstream film can have.

In the same way that The Curse of the Black Pearl defied expectations, the sequel, Dead Man's Chest, sticks to formula and by-the-numbers blockbuster cinema. It is, unfortunately a film without heart, genuine comedy or enjoyment. In short, it is the most disapointing film of 2006.

The first act of the film is largely disconnected with the rest of the film. Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann's (Keira Knightly) marriage is interrupted and they are both put in chains by the evil Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander, who Keira Knightly fans will recognise as Mr Collins from last year's Pride and Prejudice, doing the best he can with a very poorly written part). The only way out is if Turner is able to retrieve Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp, who must be rueing the day he signed on to two sequels) compass. Eventually he is found on a cannibal island, about to be eaten. This would be all very well if it hadn't taken us about half and hour to get there. It'd also be very well if this was the begining of the crux of the film. It isn't all very well, because as it turns out, all this has almost nothing to do with the rest of the film.

In fact, it isn't until halfway through that Davey Jones (Bill Nighy) turns up and the plot begins to move. He's locked up his heart in a chest (hence the title of the film), and whoever has said heart, controls the seas. Sparrow wants the heart so as to free himself of his debt to Jones, Turner wants it so as he can free Swann from Beckett, and later his father (Stellan Skarsgard, giving one of the only decent performances in the film - at least, as best as one can with a starfish stuck to the side of your head) from service to Jones, and Beckett wants it so he can be all-powerful, and do those evil deeds that only baddies in Disney films seem to want to do.

The major problem with a lot of the plot is that numerous events occur off-screen, and are then talked about for twenty minutes. So we don't get a lot of action (especially in the first twenty minutes); instead we get a lot of clunky dialogue. For example - we aren't actually shown the break up of the wedding. We are only told about its consequences. Similarly, we don't see Jack's ship beached, and him adopted as the leader of the cannibal tribe. We only are told about it, and its consequences. This makes for a very dry first third of the film.

Johnny Depp was a major draw to the original film, and many cite his masterful portrayal as Jack Sparrow as the major reason for the film's success. Unfortunately, in this film they seem to have decided to put Jack Sparrow on repeat, with many of his gags recycled from the first, and a general limiting of his style of humour. Depp unfortunately suffers from this, as his appearance on screen - especially during action sequences - means that another laboured punchline will shortly arrive. Also, the decision to bring in a Sparrow/Swann love interest must rate as one of the worst plotting decisions ever in a sequel.

Similarly, bending the plot-line to accomodate the reuse of many of the popular characters from the first film smacks of a lack of imagination and a by-the-numbers approach. While Pintel and Ragetti were amusing in the first film, I was disapointed to see them reinserted into this one, especially as they now appear to be on the 'good' side. Barbossa's return is also more of the same, and an extremely obvious plot 'twist'. Similarly, the film seems to want to constantly pay homage (some would say recycle) the memorable li

This film was absolute dreck. Gawsh...it was awful. The plot was mundane, the acting was vanilla, there was nothing intriguing about the movie and I just sat there in stunned silence at how awful the movie was. The Sparrow/Swann love story is just confusing and stupid. I agree with TBM that it is the worst plot decision in the entire film. Blech!

    >>He picks up the musket, fires, and OH MY GOD IT TURNS INTO THE MATRIX. Slow motion bullet time, the most overused and cliched effect in martial arts films, let alone a PIRATE film, kicks in, and we spin around the bullet as it soars to its mark. Did anyone, anyone at all, point out that this might just be a tad silly for this kind of film? No? Anyone at all?<<

I kinda found it interesting in that, as far as I can tell, it's the first it's been done with a pellet and not a bullet. Kinda messes with the audiences expectations like "oh, bullet time, well out of habit I expect to see a bullet come out- oh, ha, it's a pellet, that's right. Cute."; sorta fits in with the film's humor in a way that's oddly appropriate, though I agree that, stylisticly it kinda feels out of place a bit since we haven't seen that sorta thing establsihed for this series prior to that instance.

    Hm!

Guess I won't be giving my opinion on this movie, considering it will probably get flamed due to its positivity.

One thing I would like to know, though, is why Bootstrap wasn't fully... monster.

He was the only one that I saw on Jones' crew that possessed human characteristics.

Quest, I can see what you mean, but I don't think the target audience (especially that sequence) would pick up on that, or even know the difference between a pellet and a bullet.

Don't be silly. Most of the reviews in here have been positive, and there will be no flaming in here if I (or the mods of this forum) have anything to do with it.

I think it was because he's a "recent" addition to his crew. Remember, he only died during The Curse of the Black Pearl.

The bullet time thing didn't bother me at all. I thought that entire sequence was well done.

I loved the swordfight between Jack, Will, and Norrington. Fantastic.

Kiera had a bum part, but she was okay.

The two dudes who were on Barbossa's crew that are back in this one were great. I enjoyed their moments.

    What an ending! Great cliffhanger!

"Look- an undead monkey. Top that."

Great line. Reminded me of the old Monkey Island video game.

Well, I enjoyed the movie immensely.

The action was great and the humor was excellent.

I think that this is a movie that you can actually have fun watching, which is something that Hollywood is lacking these days.

And of course, the special effects are among the best I've ever seen, if not the best.

It all looked extremely real (except for the Hammerhead) and I was very pleased, as I was with the Curse of the Black Pearl.

The only flaw was the acting.

Johnny Depp was excellent, as usual (I don't think he can give a bad performance if he tried), as was Skarsgard (sp?), but Bloom and Knightley were, once again, below average.

My other disappointment was the video at the end of the credits.

I waited through ten minutes of credits for that?

    Ah well.

Overall, I loved this movie, and the characters that were portrayed (not necessarily the actors).

    Can't wait for more Barbossa.

    :)

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

    Two negatives, though:

    1) Way, way too long. They could've gotten rid of one or two subplots.

    2) Orlando Bloom is, as always, vacant as the Bates Motel. I seriously want a moment in the 3rd film where Elizabeth yells at Will for never having anything interesting to say.

The clip at the end of the credits was hilarious, if only because half the audience waited through 10 minutes of torture to see it. :p

holy hell, estimates are in at box office mojo, 55million dollars on Friday.

Saw it last night, thought it was great. And I stayed spoiler free, so I didn't expect that ending.

oh man, there was a clip at the end? Guess I gotta see it again, hehe.

Btw, still can't believe there making another Rocky film, did anyone else get a trailer for the next rocky film? Which actually looks pretty good and once they started playing the rocky music, just brings back memories
    of the other films.

Norrington was really great! He was much better in this one.

Poor Geoffry Rush. He was in the movie for like ten seconds.

I saw this movie this morning. Man it was great! My favorite scene was when Norington, Jack, and Will were all fighting each other for that key. And how Elizabeth was trying to get them to stop but then just gave up and pouted in the sand like a child!

Really loved Keira's performance. It was so cool to see her in all of that action and sword fighting instead of just being the damsel in distress like she was in the first movie.

Loved these two lines in particular:

    "Look an undead monkey!"

"Hello Elizabeth [to Gibbs] hide the rum."
