Yodaisms

Is there a compiled list of Yoda's fortune cookie-like sayings on any of the forums? Not just the ones in the movies, but also ones he's said in the EU -- either by himself or told secondhand by other characters?

 

I don't think there is one but i know a few of his sayings:
Fear is a path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.- TPM

Size mattters not...- ESB

"Wars not make one great!" and

Yoda sounds like Waru..

or did he mean the lightsabers with it..

Imagine it:
"Shine we shall, like our sabers. Activate our inner energy cell, we must. The Blade you are, the guiding hand, the Force will be."

I've been scouring my collection of EU works and found a few (they may not necessiarily be words of wisdom per se, but they were quotes other characters attributed to Yoda):

"If an enemy exists not, obstructed you cannot be." - Jedi: Aayla Secura

"Age more than a count of heartbeats is. Age is how many mistakes you have made." - Dark Rendevous

"Humility, endless is." (Master Windu's translation: "You?re never too old to make another big mistake.") - Dark Rendevous

"When you look at the dark side, careful you must be, for the dark side looks back." - Dark Rendevous

 

My absolute favorite Yodaism of all time:

"Patience! For the Jedi it is time to eat as well!"

On the surface, this can easily be misinterpreted, I think--as though the Weird Little Swamp Dweller is telling Luke, "Chill out--this Yoda's probably having his dinner now, too, so why not relax and have some of this nice stew? We can go find Yoda in a little bit."

There is another possible interpretation--which is why the above line tickles me so much. Consider this Zen koan:

A monk asked Zhaozhou, "I have just joined the community, and I request the teacher's instruction."

Zhaozhou inquired, "Have you had your breakfast gruel yet?"

The monk said, "I have had my gruel."

Zhaozhou said, "Then go wash your bowl."

That monk had an insight.

I like to think of Yoda's line as a streamlined version of that koan.

One of the best aspects of the Power of the Jedi sourcebook is how it illustrates the Jedi Code with various "quotes" from famous Jedi. There's several from Yoda.

There's even one from Dooku on humility.

 

"If fall you do, Catch you i will"

Actually, it was "When you fall, catch you I will". Dooku muses that perhaps Yoda had known, all those years ago, that Dooku would one day fall.

Here's part of a speech to Obi-Wan from Jedi: Yoda:

"A sword that remains in it's sheath never nicks, never dulls, does not rust. Never does it kill, or maim, or dishonor it's owner through misuse. Battered and worn by passing years, the sheath may become, but the blade remains sharp and untarnished. Though much use has your 'blade' seen, Obi-wan, you have not dulled. Hope you give me, for the future of the Jedi. But in this war, unsheathed must all of the Jedi's blades be- their power weilded. Survive constant use, even the best blades cannot. To say nothing of the damage done to those against whom they are drawn."

 

Hi all! In ROTS when we see Yoda in his private quarters talking to Anakin Yoda belted out many great words of wisdom. My favorite one from ROTS is in my sig(for the time being):

...train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose

TESB- You must un-learn what you have learned

 

There should be a book made on Yodaisms.

 

my favorite. One of Lucas' greatest lines. it can actually be applied to the real world!

 

Not if you're an atheist, and don't believe in the supernatural. Then its just so much quasi-mystical poodoo.

 

If you're not a fan of things mystical, why watch Star Wars?
