"you did your duty, Corde did hers"......wait a second

Surely Padme hadn't actually done her duty yet-the line should be-"Corde did her duty,now you need to do yours"
(I know its nit-picky, but thats why we're here!)

 

The first time I saw the movie I didn't even think anything of it.

Only when I obsess over the line does it bother me.

Either George Lucas is stupid and he does not know how to phrase senetences correctly to give their intended meaning, OR he meant, Corde did her duty (pretend to be you), you did yours (pretend to be her). Maybe he just meant, that was your duty. He was reassuring Padme that it wasn't her fault, that for her own safety it wasn't up to her to pretend to be or not to be someone else and that she had done her duty!

 

By the way, you should start a thread here called "Worst dialouge in Episode II"

I would rank the lines between Captain Typho and Padme high compared to other lines in the movie because, although they were fairly illogical, they were delivered well and flowed well (were not choppy). Some of the other lines in the movie, however...

 

Well Padme did her duty by coming to Coruscant to vote on the MCA.

 

8 months later and pointless rants still abound.

 

Come on folks this statement by Typho is that hard to figure out. Corde was a body guard( stand in) for the queen and her job was to protect her and she did.

 

I'm sure there is already a topic about what changes you would make to this movie somewhere.

 

The duty Padmé had done was to make sure she wasn´t killed.

 

He says that after Padme says, "I shouldn't have come back."

By "did your duty," he was referring to her returning to Coruscant to participate in the vote.

 

I found the line oddly humorous. I guess life is cheap if you're a handmaiden.

 

I always thought that the line meant that Padmé did he duty by actually posing as a Pilot, and Cordé did hers by being her decoy - all in order for Padmé to get onto the planet safely. Or something along the lines of that...

It's not like everyone in a high risk situation would be able to use proper english. The line is basically saying that Corde did what she had to do for Amidala'sprotection , and that Padme shouldn't feel guilty for it. Nothing more...

Spaced you must be really annoying to watch a movie with...if you need to pick apart lines like that, give it up and enjoy the movie.

Wow, politics in the SW Galaxy isn't very complicated at all, all you need to do is show up and you've done your duty!

That scene should have been like those old G.I.Joe spots...

Typho: This vote is very important. You did your duty and Corde did hers.

Padme: What duty was that?

Typho: You showed up and showing up is half the battle.

I guess most of the Senators just send an aide to vote for them while they relax by the pool.

 

I fail to see what is wrong with that line.

 

My take on this line is that Corde's just taken the blast, now run like the dickens before you get shot too and waste her sacrifice. That's why Typho 'aint greivin - his first priority is to get Natalie Portman out of there.

 

Why didn't Typho just shoot Padme there, it would have stopped a lot of bashing!

Actually, there is a metal rod in his eye socket and it just screws on.
Quite ingenious actually.

 

I don't have a problem with this line. Padme was returning to Coruscant to vote on an important issue. That was her job, as a senator. Corde's job was to be a decoy, and she did her job.

Even if you don't believe that explanation, you have to remember that Typho just saw a starship (that he was "protecting") blow up, so he wasn't paying a lot of attention to what he was saying. His focus was on getting Padme out of harm's way, not on making sure his sentences made perfect sense.

 

I don't think there is anything wrong with this line. It is easy to understand as well since it is after Padme says, "I shouldn't have come back." That tells you why Typho says "You did your duty," her duty was coming to Coruscant to vote on the Military Creation Act. Quite simple really.
