There was an attempt, in Karen Traviss' books, to make the Spaarti clones a Separatist plot to have their own clone army to fight alongside their droids. Since their cloning methods were much faster than Kamino's, they could churn out clones sooner, but these clones were also mentally unstable. So at least that coincides with Pellaeon's memories in Heir to the Empire.

Traviss wasn't the only one who wrote a story with the Spaarti clones. That goes back further to a short story, which I think was written by Zahn.

And while an obvious retcon, it wasn't a terrible concept. I think it's an example of when a retcon can actually spur creativity and generate ideas for interesting stories.

That is one thing I will miss about the old EU, the retconing was actually quite fun and worked out at times.

Yeah, I fought in the Clone War. There was just one. I was with the Green Jedis Special Units Battalions, Commando Airborne Tactics, Specialist Tactics Unit Battalion.

We were all over the galaxy. I was in Geocities, Pow Wow, I was all over the place.

It was some real surreal ****, man. I was a dude that looked like the dudes he was fighting beside. One dude get shot, get replaced by a dude that looked like the first dude who looked like all the other dudes anyway. There were so many dudes I couldn't remember which dude I was!

By the time the war was over, there were so few of us dudes left they replaced us with other dudes that didn't look like us dudes.

Every once in a while, I run into a dude that looks like me and he thinks I'm another dude that looks like him, but neither of us is the dude we're looking for.

    That's how it was, man.

I thought it referred to two wars that were played out almost identical, hence they were "clone" wars.

I imagine it referred to at least two wars. It may have been a throwaway reference to establish Obi-Wan and Luke's father as great warriors. Or Lucas may have had something more specific about it on an outline. Remember that Lucas originally planned for twelve episodes, not just nine, and he originally planned for the Emperor to appear in like Episode 9 when he decided there would only be nine stories. He changes his mind a lot. It may screw up a lot of the post-ROTJ EU, but it may not. I have a theory that he and the writers have planned to have Episode 9 take place well after the final EU novels (Fate of the Jedi), but I'm probably going to be wrong.

kind of this. i heard the rumors of vader and the volcano battle but i never really thought too much about the clone wars. i really just saw the stories as stand alone stories when i was young.

I thought the war would have been about the Emperor forming an army of clones and conquering the Republic from the outside. He would wipe out the Jedi at the same time. Stormtroopers replaced them over time.

The Jedi lived on some Force made planet like the Green Lantern Corps and be wiped out by the Empire in a surprise attack. Or the temple where the Rebel Alliance makes its base on in Episode IV was the temple originally instead.

I thought the 'clone' wars were actually a set of movies before 'star' wars.
I was about 5 years old at the time.

Well, I discovered the Star Wars trilogy the same year I saw Episode I, so at first I wondered if the Naboo war was supposed to have been the Clone Wars (droids, clones - hey, they all look alike, don't they?)

Once that had been cleared up, I was dying to know what the Clone Wars coming up in Episode II would look like (time passes much, much more slowly when you're a kid). And because I'd seen a few pics of that armor, I assumed that the villains would be Mandalorians. (Like most people, I of course assumed the clones would be the villains).

I also didn't think there'd be an instant transition from Clone Wars to Empire.

Yes I as well thought the clones would be an army of supercommando's like Boba Fett. It actually states this somewhere on Power of the Force collection in mid '90's. I figured Palpatine would rise to power and we would have this army against the Jedi with their Republic army of clones as well. Even though this is not what we got (see Prequal rewrites in PT forum) I am glad Lucas worked a Fett into the story line and stuck to his original idea's somewhat. The classic trilogy delivered so many of these thoughts with the mere mention of the times before and what they were like.

I didn't think of the Clones as being clones at the time.
I just assumed there was a planet Clone where Clonians were having a war.

I always assumed the clone wars were these great battles, spanning across the galaxy. However, I never thought the Jedi and the Clones would be on the same side... upon hearing "the clone wars" in ANH, I assumed it was somewhat like a cheesy 80's sci-fi flick in where the Jedi and humans were fighting endless armies of clones. Kinda like a non-mechanical terminator scenario.

The Clone Wars were a conflict started by an invasion of the Mandalorians with an artificial army. The stormtroopers were once created to fight the invasion. The Jedi were a secret order of monks and wizards which fought off the real villains in the galaxy, the Dark Force users who were secretly provoking the war through their own secret order. Most of the galaxy never knew of this struggle going on under their noses. There would be only several hundred Jedi, not 10,000.

The Empire formed after the Mandalorians were defeated and new territory was conquered. The Clone Wars probably lasted decades not just three years. Palpatine created a secret army of Dark Jedi to hunt down and destroy his enemies, Darth Vader was one of them until he kill all the rest off and because the Emperor's apprentice. The massacre of the Jedi took place pretty quietly.

Love the idea of a discussion like this, I'd never thought of that since I grew up while the prequel trilogy was being made. That's probably the first thing I would do if time travel became possible - visit the year 1977 and go see the original Star Wars on the big screen. Can't wait to see more responses from people who experienced it! :D
