I don't even think PETA knows what their agenda is anymore (if they ever did). It's sad that this is the most visible voice in the Animal Rights movement though :(

It's crazy that they tell you not to harm animals, yet pass out flyers and such that depict it.

Just because they depict it doesn't mean they condone or support it! So it isn't so crazy, I'd say.

It does seem a bit OTT, but then so does the reaction to it here. They don't like animals being killed so they're using shock tactics because people are desensitised to violence. [lame joke]Where's the beef?[/lame joke] What would you guys prefer? That they should go out and actively stop people from eating meat? You can't exactly say that they're doing anything bad by attempting to change an opinion - however badly they're doing it. They don't want animals to die, so they're trying to persuade people not to have them killed.

Incidentally, this htread so reminds me of one that we had one religion the other day. It was about evangelicals trying to convert people. It got locked, I recall, becuas eit turned into a big fight.

Now, I dodn't see that happening here, since PETA appears to be universally loathed. But in both cases it's about people with strong beliefs trying to convince others to "do the right thing" - as they themselves see it. Everybody gets so angry with these guys, and I just don't understand why. If you don't like their message, then don't listen. Problem solved.

We aren't talking terrorists who'll attack a vivisectionist or insane religious types who'll fly a plane into a skyscraper and cause thousands of deaths. We've got some people with strong opinions and some mildly offensive leaflets.

Sheesh. Why don't we just stick all these weirdos into camps so they don't bother us any more, eh? We don't want people with "crazy ideas" going round convincing other people, do we? We just want a nice status quo where nothing changes and nobody asks any difficult questions and it's all happy and lalalalala.

If you asked a PETA type "What is the world coming to?" Said person'd agree it's a terribly world since so many millions of animals die every day needlessly simply to provide humans with tasty meat, contributing to droughts and world hunger. He might feel that a strongly-worded leaflet campaign wasn't, perhaps, the worst thing he could be doing with his time.

    [/rant over]

Seriously, guys, it's a fricking leaflet. There are people being slaughtered in Darfur - that's more demanding of a "What is the world coming to?" than "These guys have these leaflets I disagree with. Calm down and get a sense of perspective!

I can't believe that's real! These guys have just gone way over the line.

I'm a die hard Marxist hippy who is totally against hunting and animal abuse, but I totally object to such ludicrously awful tactics. They can't start turning kids against their parents in such a violent way. How dare they start pandering to kids!

I'm all for total political freedoms, even, in fact, especially, for groups I don't agree with. However, once they start interfering with our individual livelihoods, they've crossed the line.

They can't force people to not eat meat simply because they think its bad. Meat is essential to the well-being of the human body, no matter what vegetarians claim. They are perfectly entitled to not eat meat, but using shock tactics to force others(particularly kids!) to not eat meat, is akin to forcing people to smoke!

Its absolutely despicable and it gives rela, peaceful and sensible animal rights groups, a bad name.

Thats the end of my politcal rant of the day.

    How are they forcing you?

Meat is essential to the well-being of the human body, no matter what vegetarians claim.

Not so. Vegetarians live 10 years longer than people who eat meat. How can it be essential? We're talking about an entire decade added to your life.

They are perfectly entitled to not eat meat, but using shock tactics to force others(particularly kids!) to not eat meat, is akin to forcing people to smoke!

Again, I don't like the ad, but I don't see how this is "forcing" anyone to do anything.

I mean trying to force by shocking kids and turning them against their parents.

and that 10 years added on is BS.

I agree. Meat is just as essential to a diet as anything else. However, a person shouldn't eat meat every waking moment. They need balance in their diet.

Precisely. To live a good life, you have to live a moderate life. If you eat too much of anything, its bad for you.

People who eat too much meat have a higher risk of heart disease, people who eat too little meat become anaemic.

I'll worry about my decade of extra life when I'm 40.

But I think distributing gory comic books to school children is the wrong way of recruiting vegitarians. Be positive. Say: "Hey little girl, do you want to live an extra ten years?" :D

"People who eat too much meat have a higher risk of heart disease, people who eat too little meat become anaemic."

No. I've never eaten meat in my life, in fact, I eat relatively little dairy products and eggs as well. And a couple of years ago when I was required to get a checkup before I started college (the only time I've been to a doctor in years), my hemoglobin was completely within normal, not anemic at all.

However, to get on subject, I agree with you all that this PETA shock tactic stuff is dumb. Besides, I'm vegetarian out of habit and for health reasons. Carve up the cute little animals if you want to, I just won't eat 'em. :p

Don't you know that if they do that, PETA will get lawyers on them for being "intolerant".

Frankly, the best way to deal with these PETA types was exhibited in the film PCU: go to a tall building and throw raw meat on them. [face_devil]

Exactly. You have to cook it first so it's hot and delicious.

I went to a PETA protest once topless (against fur) but I still eat meat. Some of them are very cool but some are way over the top.

I would be okay with animal activists if they changed their group name to something more appealing, like FETA. Who doesn't like feta? You can eat it, and it ISN'T ALIVE!!
