How about this one? Has anyone ever created an ysalamiri?

I've got tons of reference illustrations of this creature, and some idea as to where to start...but would it look dumb to have a motionless ysalamiri on some Peace Brigader's back? It's be cool if I could make him look cool...

I have a left over too-short Twi'lek lekku that I could use as the moveable, bendable body of the ysalamiri. The only problem is making the fur on him look good, with the body. And the head. :) Basically, everything.

Any ideas and comments would be great! Thanks,

    Mazz

This sounds like a great project. I go to the cons as Grand Admiral Thrawn, I'd love to have a ysalamiri to go with the costume. I don't suppose there are any stuffed animals, lizards, dinosaurs, that could be slightly modified? It would probably be a pain to make one from scratch, though it could be done.

Mazzic, what is your lekku made out of? How did you make it?

I was just talking to Idiot's Array about this. Been trying to figure out how to come up with one that looks good. Bet if we wanted to we could even wire it up for some simple movement (eyeblinks, or something) naturally wouldn't want much there since they are ysalamiri. I'm interested in what people suggest for fur, and construction.

My Cosplay (yes, Cosplay) made a stuff dragon for her costume and it suppose to move its head & tail and has glowing eyes but somehow the mechanism got screwed up at the last minute. And I assume such mechanism does exist in certain store so why not give it a look?

They have little shoulder beasties at Renn festivals that you might look into. I'm sure there has to be actual shops that have them too, but these things have a simple wire control for head rotation.

Well, for the movement, I was planning on just relying on the wiggly-ness of the headtail/ysalamiri body.

The lekku were created using the infamous pantyhose + latex method. This one was way too short, but once a head is added, as well as other features to make it appear like the lizard/sloth ysalamiri appear to be, it should work out great. There will hopefully be just enough movement/sway in the body and tail for people to not think that it's just a model. In theory.

Actually, I think that this will be one of the cooler props to create - as long as it turns out.

    Any other suggestions/comments?

Any idea what you intend to do for fur?

I have no idea in the slightest what to do for the fur. Books have also described them as "smooth-skinned." So I was thinking maybe only have fur on the top of their backs...and just a little at that. Have an idea that might work better?

For the fur/hair you could use either strips cut from rabbit pelts (which I think you can get at Michaels Crafts), or do the same from faux fur.

Depending what you make the creature from, you may be able to individually (or cluster) insert strands of horse hair (available at least from Tandy Leather...or if you have horses it's free)...but that could get tedious...

    Just some thoughts...

Every reference I've seen says "furry snakes with legs". rabbit pelts may not be a bad idea. THe faux stuff tends to look like poodoo though
