“If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise.”

Sounded something like a prophacy, imo.

Joking aside, I think Rey will found a new Jedi Order, though this will probably happen after IX. Jedi will be back as a religion, but they'll probably be quite different from their pre-Order 66 selves.

The Jedi will rise without him though.

Well, as a surface read, it’s just “if-then.” Not “Luke Skywalker will return and personally train a new generation of Jedi.”

While it's true that he didn't technically return, his appearance on Crait and his incredibly powerful use of the force there was enough to inspire a future generation, so Snoke's fears came to fruition. It's just a classic case of a prophecy not panning out exactly as originally foretold (kind of like the prophecy involving Anakin bringing balance to the force. Sure, it happened eventually, but in a much more roundabout way than anyone would have guessed.)

It could also depend of the meaning of "return." Did it mean "physically return"? Or did it mean "return to the ways of the force"? Luke had shut himself off from the force, but at the end of TLJ, he returned to it more strongly than we've ever seen before.

I believe therein lies the deliberate ambiguity.

Of course he did. We saw him become the Legend the galaxy needs. It is awesome. And I hope (and think) we'll see him in IX as well.

I don't think it's ambiguous, really. His physical presence on Crait is entirely beside the point. It's about what he chooses to do. In this case, doing something that means sacrificing himself to keep the hope alive.

This brings to mind the use of the word “return” vs use of “come back” in TFA.

Yeah, I wonder what JJ will do. I can;t imagine Luke not playing some role. That would be missing a huge opportunity. I know they will want to keep the focus on Rey, and I think they can. But Luke still has to fulfill his charge ot pass on what he knows, and he and Yoda have the task to "Lose Rey, we must not."

Also to note Luke was old and would not live long enough to train many jedi

Yes well thats what I meant I guess

Clearly not. We all have our own interpretations but a big part of it was getting to attached to any ruling body and not remaining completely autonomous. I also think there will be other refinements.

Luke already did apart of it like not working for the New Republic.

Except that I didn't buy any of that. It was actually really underwhelming and it only works if NO ONE in the FO has a lick of common sense or thinking skills.

Ah the old Certain Point of View fallacy strikes again in the SW universe. :p

To be fair, Snoke probably was just making an assumption. He was surprised after reading Rey's mind in Ep8 that Skywalker just wants to die and he will be glad to fulfill that wish of his. But then he died too. Ep8: Time for everything to die.

Luke’s mission is still underway, but looks promising. “I am not the Last Jedi”

Luke wasn't' That old... late 50's. He had at least another 20 years in him. Plenty of time. But it's not really the point. He can still pass on what he knows and maybe more than that.

Snoke thought Luke was Kylo's equal in the Force when he said that. I actually think he came to see Rey as the greater threat than Luke after he realized it was Rey.

Also Rey revealed she saw the tree with the Jedi texts in dreams. This is because she is actually the figure of "destiny" for a new beginning for the Jedi, not Luke.
