Chapter 1: Of Healers and Handprints

?Back again, Padawan Kenobi?? The frazzled healer asked as she bustled past the requisitions desk at the Jedi Temple?s healing ward. The seventeen-year-old looked up, flashing her a hassled grin before his expression returned to mutinous rage as he glared at the med-droid beeping innocently behind the desk.

?Master Ilich-yan is low on bacta patches and he has Saber II in a click.? The healer winced at the thought of a half-dozen eight-year-olds wielding low-power lightsabers. Jedi initiates, while far more demure and possessing eons more self-control than most younglings, were still rambunctious children underneath the hoods.

?An extra-large pack then?? She smiled, smacking the offending droid with a primary tentacle on her way to the main supply closet. ?Droids: if you want anything done you have to do it yourself!? Kenobi merely smiled gratefully for the rescue.

The Aquarian healer entered the restricted area, more of a small warehouse than a storage closet, and scanned the carefully-labeled rows for the needed patches. Flicking her eyestalks unobtrusively towards where the teenager stood shifting from foot to foot; looking suspiciously as if he would bolt from the ward at the first sight of a hypospray. She quickly appraised his physical condition. The healer scanned the boy for gaping wounds or missing limbs and, finding none, wished not for the first time that Jedi robes didn?t hide quite so many things. Turning back to the task at hand, she quickly located the bacta and exited the closet. She emerged from the desk and, after firmly planting the box in Obi-Wan?s waiting hands, ushered him out of the requisitions ward.

?Now, you tell Master Ilich-yan that if Sabre II uses all of these he should revert to drastic measures. I suggest firm mind-suggestions.? Obi-Wan nodded with a small smile before striding briskly from the healing ward.

After the doors had slid closed behind him; the healer stood for a moment to appraise the youngster. No limp, no hacking cough or obvious hallucinations. Satisfied, she nodded. There was an unspoken agreement between several of the teaching masters and several more of the day-shift healers. Obi-Wan ran most of his masters? errands to the healers? ward. When something was out of stock or a youngling needed escorting to the ward for a contagious ailment, the padawan was quietly sent from class. It was the only way that the boy consciously set foot inside the ward, and for the past several years the healers and masters preferred to keep a close eye on Kenobi. She turned back to her previous destination, and considered how long it would be until she could pull the boy in for a formal examinations without raising his suspicions.

Three corridors from the healing war?s main entrance, the padawan in question stopped and leaned tiredly against a wall. It was nice of his galactic history master and former initiate sabre master to go through the trouble; but if they thought he didn?t recognize the check-ups for what they were, they should at least know that he wasn?t going to walk into the healers ward and flaunt the bruises that he hadn?t quite been able to hide from the teaching masters. He winced, hiking up one of his sleeves and rubbing gingerly at the handprint that splashed his wrist wit

The descriptions were great. :) I'm eagerly looking forward to more.

    Oh, my!

Who'd abuse my Obi-Wan and why would he keep it hidden from his master? For that matter, why are the healers watching him? Isn't there a mandatory reporting of potential abuse law in the Temple?

You have quite an intriguing story started here.

    Hello All!

Thank you all so so much for your wonderful feedback! I'm so excited to see how this story works out. I'm rushing this chapter out un-betaed because I'm leaving early tomorrow and won't have internet for a while. I'll try to get on sometime next week, but please be patient. In the meantime, here's chapter 2!

    Chapter 2 - Of Veggie-Lumps

Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn emerged from the small refresher in the guest suite of the Dejjani Hotel to find his apprentice poking listlessly around in the cooling unit. ?Didn?t hear you come in, Obi-Wan,? He said tiredly, smiling slightly when the seventeen-year-old started at his voice. ?The moment, padawan, stay in the moment.? At the boy?s rueful nod, the tall master plucked the package of leftover vegetables from Obi-Wan?s hands, shutting the door with a foot and flicking the cooking unit on distractedly. The younger man looked around for a moment after being relieved of his burden before opening various cabinet doors in the small kitchen area.

?Looking for something, padawan?? Qui-Gon said without looking up, his attention on the lump of soggy vegetables that refused to separate from its unattractive square shape at the bottom of the cooking pan.

?We?re out of tea, Master?? The boy asked, his head re-emerging from the cabinet it had been buried in.

?I?m afraid so. I finished my bags up last week and yours disappeared quickly thereafter,? The tall man said somewhat sheepishly. ?Time to break in the local brew, I think.? He nodded to the unpacked paper bag with an assortment of native groceries which was currently occupying the majority of the small kitchen?s counter space. Obi-Wan obediently squeezed past his master to the other side of the room. The older man watched curiously as his student, upon reaching the counter on which the bag stood, paused to lean heavily on its edge. As if sensing his master?s attention, however, the younger Jedi straightened suddenly and began unpacking the bag at a rapid pace.

?Sorry, Master,? he mumbled into the bag, pursing his lips. Qui-Gon paused in his methodical mashing of the veggie-lump.

?It?s? fine, Obi-Wan.? He said with a frown. ?Are you feeling alright?? The master-padawan team was, after all stretched thin and close to exhaustion. The primary elections on Dejjan had been scheduled to take three days to set up, take place, and officiate. Unyielding determination and squabbling from two factions, however, had put enough pressure on voting officials to necessitate a recounting of ballots, a process which threatened to drag the elections into their second month. The Jinn/Kenobi team sent to oversee the government?s turnover waited as anxiously as the planet?s population for the politicians to stop their bickering, a task that irked the elder Jedi to no end. While his master made calls and public appearances that were as close to bullying as Jedi generally strayed, Obi-Wan scoped public opinion, studied, and taught several self-defense classes at a local public center. The same facility which the boy had recently arrived from, if the tall man recalled correctly. That would explain the fatigue, then.

?Your trainees left you this drained?? The master asked, as Obi-Wan seemed to have ignored the first question. His student looked at him askance for a moment before comprehending the question.

?Yes, Master, they?re as bad as the initiates sometimes.? The two shared a chuckle before Qui-Gon interrupted the merriment.

?Go and shower before the evening meal, padawan. I?ve got dinner.? Obi-Wan hesitated for a moment, looking at his master for the first time in the conversation.

?Are you sure, Master? Dinner is my responsibility.? The elder?s brow furrowed at this.

?Since when? I?m perfectly capable of cooking this.? His student simply nodded and scurried off to the ?fresher as if he?d been bitten. As the door shut quietly behind the teen, Qui-Gon regarded the veggie-lump that hissed nastily at him from the cooker. He had cooked evening meal nearly every day for twenty-some ye

Chapter 3 - Of Dinner and a Discussion

Palming the door closed with the hand not occupied in balancing the tray of food delivered by a cheerful attendee; Qui-Gon Jinn turned back into the room to see the dripping head of his bedraggled apprentice poking out of the refresher door.

?Is it safe?? The boy queried with a glance at the now closed main door. Qui-Gon chuckled briefly, adjusting his grip on the varnished tray.

?All clear: no admirers lurking behind the couch for a glimpse of your scantily-clad body,? The master reported with a smirk. Obi-Wan?s modesty in front of strangers was somewhat of a humorous topic to his gruff master, especially when it was observed that the boy showed no trace of such restraint around his peers in the temple.

The older man expected at least a roll of sparkling green eyes in retribution for his teasing comment. Instead the seventeen-year-old merely adjusted the towel which he clasped around his trim waist. Stepping fully from the steamy interior of the fresher, the young man shivered and scuffed a bare foot through the puddle of water that was rapidly forming on the tiled floor.

?Do I have time to dress before the meal, Master?? he asked, eyes shining with an emotion Qui-Gon couldn?t place. The Jedi lowered the tray to the kitchen table, and picked up the mug of tea he abandoned when the door chimed and sipped at the warm liquid.

?No Padawan, you do not,? the tall man said with a touch of humor that belied the sternness of the sarcastic tone.

His padawan smiled hesitantly before closing the refresher door, re-adjusting his towel, and seating himself across from his master at the small wooden table occupying half of the common room. Green eyes flashed a glance at the nondescript cream mug held in his master?s calloused hand as the apprentice settled himself in the straight-backed chair. There was a moment?s silence before the elder decided to take the strange incident as a sign of his student?s good humor; a repayal of his sarcasm.

Unveiling various steaming dishes, the master tried his hardest not to chuckle at the serious expression on his student?s face which clashed so humorously with the boy?s bare torso and slowly dripping ginger locks. The spiky hair which plastered itself to the pale scalp during the apprentice?s shower, was beginning to stand on edge once more; the water that had weighed it down now pooling on the synthetic floor and running slowly down handsome shoulders. A brief twitch of his nose dislodged a drop of water which dangled at its tip was the only movement from the youth for the duration of the time Qui-Gon employed setting up the meal dishes.

Once his master had fixed a plate for himself, Obi-Wan spared a quick glance at the food choices before heaping a pile of fresh vegetables onto his plate. His master?s lips twitched in appreciation of the irony of the boy?s meal choice.

?Vegetables, Padawan?? He asked seriously. The youth in question looked up from his determined consumption of the meal, and lowered his utensil mid-bite as if reproached.

?No, by all means, keep eating!? The elder said with a grin which faded slightly at his apprentice?s hesitation to follow through with the joking command. ?Are you sure everything is alright?? He asked, dropping the playful tone altogether in favor of concern.

The light-haired youth slowly levered the gepino slice off the prongs of his eating utensil against the side of his plate; prying it off of the tines and repositioning it on his place. He set the metal rod back on the table beside the platter with a small click before looking up.

?Yes, Master, just not very hungry tonight,? He said with a smile that looked suspiciously forced. ?Would you excuse me for the evening?? Qui-Gon couldn?t help the disbelief that played across his face. The thought of his padawan; the living bottomless pit, not wanting a meal was laughable in nature.

?Of course,? he said tolerantly ?but don?t skip breakfast or people with think I?m?? He trailed off for a second, grey eyes having cau

Hey all. Just some responses for my lovely readers!

LilyHobbitJedi: Hey master! Did you get a new icon? I'm so glad you like this.... even though you have to see it in its corrupted form! See, vacation isn't as bad as I thought! Especially when there's free wireless internet. *Snickers*

Princess_Arulmozhi: My my, could I tell you that? Well, that would kind of ruin the story for you. But I'll say that Qui has no clue what's going on (as you've probably guessed from these last posts.) I'm glad you like the descriptions.... they're one of my soft spots. :D

memories_of_fate: Well, I'm away from home right now, so updates are a tad sporadic. But I have a few chapters written out by hand, so I'm good for a little while. My computer has also tragically locked me out (courtesy of my mother the programmer.) But I'm trying :)

Meredith_Kenobi: Well, he obviously doesn't have lukemia: there's definately someone else involved. No telling who, though! Awww, I'm sure Obi loves your flower..... he needs all the pity he can get. *evil laughter*

Valairy Scott: Well, your Obi has his reasons why he won't tell his master. *evil chuckle* This is one of the stories I've actually thought out in advance, so there is an actual plot. Hehehe. As for the healers, they're not 100% sure who's behind the abuse. They wouldn't want to accuse someone without proof, and Obi's making sure they don't get any. Why... well that's nobody's business yet! Thanks!

    VaderLVR64:
Oh, of course you quote the passage with the spelling error right smack dab in the middle of it! Heh. Glad you like it!!

__Sithspawn__: Thank you thankee thankee! Well, who knows how long it will go on. Hopefully not too long, because there's only so long I can stretch this story without a good plot twist!

    Gkilkenny:
Oh, it's my favorite type too! I love reading 'em, and when I run out I end up writing my own!! As for telling Qui-Gon, he might have a very good reason why not to. Or he might not. *evil laughter*

Dragonlady: Oh thank you! Hooking people is such fun!

    Thanks to all of you!

Well, you did say that this has a plot;)

    This keeps getting more interesting...

Qui-Gon seems to be picking up on things. That is the way with parents: whenever we do not want them to know something they suddenly become twice as observant. More often than not, it's for the best.
