    [face_pumpkin] You're invited to a costume party!! [face_pumpkin]

How can we have a costume party in fanfic?? Read on...

    - You, the writer, must wear a costume. No, not literally, though you can if you want to. You must write something you never write, dress yourself up in something completely different.

    Examples:

If you only ever write Luke and Mara romance in Beyond, dress yourself up and write Padme angst in Saga.

If you only use cannon characters and frequently put your setting in Saga or Beyond, dress yourself up and write an OC centered story in Before.

The idea is to be someone you usually aren't so don't just make a little change, make it big! If you only make one small change, that's like wearing a tee shirt that says:

    [image=http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e272/mavjade/Mycostume.jpg]

    Boring!

We want you to wear an elaborate costume you really put some time and effort into!

Having trouble figuring out what to write? Try thinking of one of your stories and imagining what it would like like in an Alternate Universe of itself. Try writing the exact opposite. If your story was angsty, make it happy. If you wrote an OC, write a canon character. If you wrote an action vignette, trying writing what happens during a dull interlude between battles. Have fun imagining your story flipped on its head!

    [face_skull]

    Wearing Your Costume:

Along with what you usually include with your story (Title, Genre, Authors Notes etc.) put what your costume is and why.

    Example:

    Title: Horror in the Household
    Author: random_writer
    Genre: Action, Horror
Authors Notes: Thanks to Baddie_Beta for looking this over for me! This was written for the Mod's Costume Party Challenge.
My costume: Han and Leia action/horror set in Saga. I usually write Luke and Mara romance or angst in Beyond. I've never even attempted to write Han and Leia other than as peripheral characters and I've never felt comfortable writing action or horror.

    - Any story that does not have a reason why the story is their costume will not be eligible to win colors.

    - Post a link to your story in this thread so people can find them to vote.

    - Please put [Costume Party] in your Subject line so the stories are easy to recognize.

    - You may post your story at any time as long as it is before the deadline.

(This challenge is open to SW fanfic and NSWFF)

    [face_alien_1]

    Voting:
Everyone, even those who are not writing are eligible to vote.

Please send in 2 votes to any fanfic mod:
    Best Costume
    2nd Best Costume

    - Do not send in votes before November 1st as all stories may not be posted. (See dates below)

    - Vote for the person you think wore the best costume, as in wrote the best story AND wrote something out of their norm.

    - No voting for yourself or with socks.

    [face_devil]

    Winning:

Scoring will be based on votes. Each vote for Best Costume will be 2 points, a vote for 2nd Best Costume will be worth 1 point. The person with the most total points will win Best Costume, 2nd most votes 2nd place and so on. Three prizes will be awarded:

1 Week of colors for Best Costume
72 hours of colors for 2nd place Costume
24 hours for 3rd place Costume

    O:)

    Dates:
Story Due By: 11:59pm, board time- Monday, October 31st
Voting Due By: 11:59pm board time- Sunday, November 6th

Idea taken with permission from karaokegal's "Come As You're Not" Fanfic Party on LiveJournal.

I have no idea what I normally write or which characters I normally write with as I tend to write a bit of everything with a bit of everyone. [face_worried]

Then write in a style you normally don't. I know I don't normally write fluff or humor... despite being a perky person in RL, that stuff just doesn't come out of my fingers! Is there any genre you don't normally play with?

Oh, you don't have to jump to something you know you'll hate. It is more about trying to do something you don't normally do, which is a great writing exercise. If you normally write action, try writing an introspective piece... or Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon in Before instead of only Beyond things. You don't have to choose something that makes you cringe to play, just something a bit off your norm.

Hmmm. I often write LM romance, but I've always wanted to do a sithy Darth Zannah and Darth Cognus piece. Hmmm. I am going to see how long my SJRS challenge response takes me and how my midterms treat me, so I might do this.

I've got the start of a story with a OC staring in Before, both something I've never done before. We shall see how this goes. I want it mostly finished before I post just because of how limited my writing time is.

Yes, as Luna said, it might have to be something that isn't your forte or a type of writing that makes you nervous, which is part of the challenge. Surely there is something that you don't usually write, one couldn't possibly always write everything possible with every character. It can be genre, characters, time period, format of writing or any number of things.

Write a haiku (or several), in script format, write a mini-musical. Write characters you've only seen or heard of in passing (you may have to do a little research).

Step out of your comfort zone, it's a scary place but you might find something you didn't know you would love! :D

Hm. My costume is a Xenomorph, made with 30 lbs of duck tape and newspaper. I can assure you that I will not be typing or writing while wearing it, much less even sitting down. Let's see... I usually write psychodramas, action, and everything but romance and I'll use both canon and OCs, usually bounty hunters, criminals, fringers, and military, and have written for Beyond and Before. That leaves me with... Saga and Non, romance, angst, mush, h/c, Obi-torture, and everything else that I don't write, and character choices would be Jedi, Sith, and big-name top-tier characters.

What an odd combination. I'd need to draft this all up on paper to see what I'm dealing with before I consider joining in.

Since nobody but Trak Nar reads my stuff, there's no reason to write something "totally different" per this contest's rules. :p

This sucks (but is cool). By the time I decide which to choose from, it will be too late to write anything!

Oh, I've already gotten it figured out for you, C_A. Just write the polar opposite of Caith'ediha. (sp?) Make the speaker a canon character who has epic Force sensitivities, had a really happy and toy-filled childhood in which he got cotton candy whenever he pleased, tell us what the cauldr'n is in the first 3 sentences, and give him a really good Aussie accent. :D

You know, that might be fun for a lot of you guys out there. Don't know what to write? Look at one of your stories, plot what it would look like in Alice-in-Wonderland, and have a ball showing us something totally different from you.

You mean I've got to write canon? :_| :p

Just kidding...this might be a good time to try writing Luke/Mara. I'll see what happens the next couple of weeks.

Good challenge idea--nothing says "challenge" like getting out of your comfort zone.

Oh man... this sounds hilariously fun.

Now if only I knew what I typically write. :'D I suppose starting with an OC instead of canon is the first step.

Come to think of it... there IS something I wouldn't normally do that I started when my muse was stuck on things that came out in 1994. (I wish that was a joke, but it totally isn't.)

    i c wut u did thar :p

Anywho, my muse returned, however, it didn't return for this challenge. All I can offer up is my costume, and even that isn't outside my comfort zone. I'm used to wearing elaborate, restrictive, and heavy costumes that leave me dehydrated and exhausted and woe betide me if I ever need to use the bathroom while suited up. Nope, what would be outside my comfort zone in terms of costumes? Wearing a t-shirt that says "This is My Costume." :p

So, yeah, I'm not gonna enter. I'll share pics of my costume, though!

Another "Costume" idea would be to write in a style that is new/different for you. Try writing in First or Second Person if you normally write in Third, or try poetry if you normally write prose.

The idea is just to have fun writing and entertaining! :D

All right, so I started my entry today. And this is officially the most meta, most nerdy thing I HAVE EVER WRITTEN. I think I am doing the equivalent of showing up going bar-hopping on Halloween in a full period Renaissance gown.

I don't know whether to thank you guys for this opportunity, or to start blaming you for the trainwreck! [face_laugh]

In regards to the style challenges... Second person future tense. I'd like to see that. Or, writing a story without using, say, the letter "e". Luke is already disqualified.

I may try a style challenge, but like I said, my muse returned for something else entirely. However, that "something else" is a bit of a departure from my usual psychodramas, sort of. If I get it finished in time, I may offer it up.
