I assume there's bigger stories out there, but it's still significant. He's the first President I believe to go there twice; and with something like 3mil Indians living in America or Americans of Indian descent there's a great deal of importance in strong ties between the two nations. India, as you'll recall, was the champion of the non-aligned movement and had previously eschewed ties with the US or USSR in favour of an isolationlist, leftist way.

Between this and the Cuba thing, Mr Obama is making some excellent diplomatic inroads. Of course, the blockade of Cuba is a day away from total success, so no rush into normalising things...

It's just too bad Mr Obama refused to live up to his promise to recognise the Armenian genocide. Very cowardly of him.

I've seen two articles about it. One of them was about Michelle Obama's (quite lovely) India-inspired clothing and the other was about whether or not Obama made a diplomatic faux-pas by chewing gum when meeting some officials.

    God, I love new media.

Obama went to India? Oh yeah, gum smacking earned the scorn of some in the Indian media. Guess he did.

Since marital rape was treated more lightly than rape between two unmarried people until the 1990's (and is still treated differently in 13 states), I'm shocked-- SHOCKED-- that someone would advocate such a view.

I saw a lot of attention given to it (particularly the embrace and the joint press conference bit) but I tend to seek out the news every morning, and I couldn't tell you which news sites exactly I got it from. I go with whatever article I find that looks like it has the most depth to it. NYT is the likeliest of my American reads to have covered it, since I don't waste time with CNN or other nonsense.

edit: Whatever I read made no mention of gum since it's news to me, but it did focus on the 2nd visit aspect as well as the attempt to build relations aimed at bringing India into more of a partnership as a regional counterbalance to China. Also did mention the typical Indian dislike for America, but not the NAM aspects -- rarely hear that term here outside of Cold War histories anymore.

Did anyone catch the story on Gov. Jindal's official portrait?

    Look at this:

It immediately reminded me of this:

But racial debate aside, is it just me or is that a really bad portrait? That was really my point by comparing it to the Seinfeld pic. It's not that bad but it is terrible beyond his skin color.

So yeah, self-hating but also art-hating.

That portrait is abysmal on its own merits (or lack thereof), and of course it's also ludicrous for reasons we all know.

Yeah it's just a bad portrait. When I first saw it thought maybe W had painted it. Not kidding.

Interesting. Foreign Policy magazine conducted a survey of the most effective US Secretaries of State in the last 50 years (polls and others here) -

    Results:

    1. Kissinger
    2. "Don't Know"
    3. James Baker
    4t. Albright
    4t. Hillary Clinton
    6. George Schultz
    7. Dean Rusk
    8t. Warren Christopher
    8t. Cyrus Vance
    10. Colin Powell
    11. Condi Rice
    12. Lawrence Eagleburger (served for 6 weeks)
    13. John Kerry

A few things - obviously, the Bush 43 team is punished for the foreign policy disasters that they were a part of. Secondly, Kerry is either a) being punished for being the current position holder, and thus is difficult to evaluate, or b) he's whiffing on his few opportunities.

To everyone who thinks that picture is Jindal's **official** portrait, thank you for proving that fools are indeed born every minute. But congrats on believing everything you read on teh interwebz.

Now if you'll excuse me, the helicopter I'm riding in has come under an RPG attack and we are making an emergency landing.

Kissinger is unsurprising on that list, but I'm gratified to see Baker getting his deserved credit. Shame he lost out to "don't know" though :p

I predicted this in the Derp thread.

It didn't take long for Jon Stewart to get hold of Evillis.

    Five-minute video clip here

Just a note: many of us North Carolinians do believe in personal hygiene.

(And I don't think my accent is THAT bad. But it might be.)

I thought that was a ranked list of the most purely evil Secretaries of State in history. No contest with Kissinger of course, but I would have ranked Schultz a bit higher.

Kissinger certainly deserves top spot of sec. of state of last 50 years as far as impact and notoriety. Many people know who he is or at least his name and you can't say that about most SoS.

Shouldn't Clinton, for using US troops to fake an attack and kill an ambassador in Benghazi (as well as for creating ebola with Obama) get worst SoS?
