    Welcome back!

A while back, Tunick kindly let me know he would be available for a part II interview if I were ever so inclined. Eventually, I decided to take him up on that offer. After all, who doesn't like hearing from the JCC's favorite schmuckhole? So, here he is! The last time I interviewed him, I was still a high schooler and the Sarcasm Knights were in full swing. Read on to find out what it would look like if a smoky back room full of grumpy bruisers playing cards under the flickering light of a Dodgers game on the telly assumed a human form.

    Enjoy!

    So, how have you been

Relatively okay; still on vacation from work, but that's over in a couple of days. Yourself?

    I’ve been good

What did you do for vacation

    Niiiiice to hear.

Lots of Friends & Office re-runs, with the Lakers & some drinking mixed in. :p

    What kind of drinks?

    Beer & whiskey.

You ever get creative with your alcoholic intake?

Kind off... I did mix a bit of rum & peach schnapps together... it’s not bad!

This came up on the forums; what do you love about Las Vegas?

The vibe of the town; gambling, sure, but the looser attitudes on certain things that can be done in public, such as smoking & drinking. Plus, the ridiculousness of taking in a walk on the strip- passing by an Eiffel Tower replica, a pyramid, a statue of Liberty, etc + the characters you see walking by. Downtown as a different, but still a great eclectic vibe, too.

Do you participate at the card tables?

No; don’t have enough courage for that. :p

    How about the slots?

Yes; that and sports betting are what I do.

Tell us about your biggest win

$170 profit of a $10 bet on the NBA Skills competition last February, and I was up to $500 on a $50 bet on a penny slot machine at the Luxor in August of '17, before cashing out there at around $200. :p

    Ever been to Vegas yourself?

Once, in the summer of ‘98, lol

I’m told it’s basically a different city now

Ahhhh, too bad. Can't speak to that... went on my first trip as an adult in August of '09, and then 5-times since August of '17. Went to a family wedding in '95, but I've got vague memories of that, and well, I was a goddamn kid. :p

I ask my mom about it sometimes, and she says it's definitely different than the days when the mob ran it, etc.

So, why is it a superior experience to, say, Disneyland?

Well, the booze is cheaper, you can smoke & the possibility of getting back your budget for the trip :p But, I wouldn't say it's a superior experience, though; last went to Disneyland in August of '19, and had a great goddamn time. A different type of trip, obviously, but still very niiiiice.

But you do prefer Vegas, no?

    Yes. :p

See, I prefer Disneyland... then again I haven’t been to Vegas in my adult life.

    How is your adult life?

So-so; having essentially my same work routine over the past year, while others either work-from-home or have job issues has been something else.

What is it like being an “essential worker?”

It's incredibly frustrating; we can be couped up in a store for hours, with some close contact impossible not to occur (when unloading the truck/being around certain areas in the backroom, as an example), but others can't in jobs that either have limited capacity to be open (restaurants) or are able to work for home? I'm not saying a return to how it was pre-COVID, obviously, but other businesses can't operate under similar guidelines/restrictions as we are, at least here in California? Ehhhh.

Even if a lot of business from us comes from online ordering (a huge increase there to say the least over the past year), and thus it cuts down on the amount of people in the stores (combined with early shopping hours for vulnerable folks + crowd control, which my store pulls off well enough), people still have to be in the store, clearly, to get those orders together, etc. Then there's the hours issue- we had an extra $2 an hour added for several weeks, which was then taken away, but even with a base pay of $15 an hour at Target, lately it's been a lot of 4 1/2 hour shifts, as opposed a full one. Usually it's bad every January after the holidays, but it's worse this year/has gone on longer, with the powers-to-be always claiming "there aren't always enough hours to go around"... I don't always believe them.

Will you feel better when they put up an Essential Workers statue?

    Hell no.

Ok, if you started a Target or Wally World-like retail superstore, what improvements would you make?

Every truck unload/the stocking from said truck would occur during overnight hours, with the shift beginning at midnight, so that enough of it (depending on truck size, staff availability, it can't always be completely done by morning) would be finished by the time the store opens/other shifts arrive; same time for an unload for 24-hour locations, because obviously it's far less crowded in the store during that time. The earliest other shifts would come in would be at 6 or 7.

$18-20 an hour per hour pay minimum; employee discount cards given, like how Walmart does it, rather than Target's asinine system (you only get a discount if paying with cash), and with no restrictions on what it can be used for. 2-days in a row for everyone; no split-days off. A place in the back with a bench & table for workers to use if the break room gets too crowded, as opposed to having a take chair outside if you want to do that. Closed on every goddamn 3-day weekend/holidays office workers get every ******* year.

    What would you call it?

    Not sure. :p

That’s the answer you’re gonna give?!

I’m interviewing you, for pete’s sake

I figured that out, sir. :p

Well, Tunes Town? Something with 'Ebbets' in it, as a nice Dodger reference.

    How about just Tunick’s?

Would make it seem like it was just a spot for clothes for too many people. :p

What’s wrong with that? The confusion makes it more memorable

    Perhaps.

    How’s Lucy?

She’s relatively fine; lost a little weight recently, but the vet told us that she needs a little extra food, and she’ll be okay. Attitude and all other habits have remained the same.

    Is Lucy the only pet?

Yes; anytime she encounters another animal on her walks, she completely loses it.

Small dogs are the best, aren’t they?

They've got their advantages: less mess to clean up on a walk, plenty of space to roam around in a townhouse, and of course...

    Is she yappy?

Yes, but a little less so than when she was younger; she's 10+ years old.

So which JCCers have you met in RL?

Armenian_Jedi, DarthIntegral, Miana Kenobi, Lowbacca_1977, MrZAP, & JointheSchwarz/Cathy (I can't for the life of me remember her current username) in person; a bunch more over the phone during that 'Call me at Walmart' "event", and couple of others I text on a semi-regular basis (LloydChristmas & Souderwan).

You’ve never met Rae, Evan, or Jay? They all used to live in SoCal, I believe...

Nope; I do believe Evan still lives out here.

And I was one of those that called you; remember that?

To be honest, I can't specifically remember your call. Sorry.

    Cor: :(

My memory ain't that good. :p

    I’m... not... memorable?

You are! I simply don't remember most of those specific calls over those 2-days; I think I've got a list somewhere who was behind each call and/or a small description of said call, but not sure where the hell it is.

    You made a list?!

Yeah, to keep track of the calls. No cell/smartphone in those days. :p

What were Dave and Cathy like? Gimme the deets

They were incredibly pleasant to chat with; one of the better memories I've had in recent years.

    DETAILS

IIRC, he mentioned how the neighborhood here in Reseda was a bit similar to areas he lived in Spain, and they both mentioned how much fun the Celebration get togethers that occurred in Florida; also they had a bunch of fun going around to different T2 filming locations here in the Valley.

So let’s talk about LA, then.

    Why LA?

I was born here, most of family is here, and it
helps the weather is pretty great most of the time. Dodgers & Lakers help too. :p

But what’s the stuff about LA that potential visitors might be enticed by, as opposed to the perception of LA as overrated and one big tourist trap?

A walk through Runyon Canyon (though it is a bit well known, but not as much as other things I’d say), a meal at Brent’s Deli here in the Valley (as good as the more well known Canter’s in Hollywood), eating and some of the mom & pop Mexican restaurants, stuff like that.

What’s your favorite part of LA?

Dodger Stadium. :D No spot I'd rather be; some of the best views of the L.A. basin can be found from certain parking lots there. It's not without its sordid history, though...

    https://laist.com/2018/10/17/dodger_stadium_chavez_ravine_battle.php.

It's not the Dodgers fault per se, but they ended up there; more people ought to know the full history of the place, and they don't.

What is the best ballpark and why is it Oracle?

    Ha!

Pleases me to no end that the Dodgers won the first official game there. :D Sadly, I’ve yet to go, but it’s an absolute gem of a ballpark from afar, so I know I’d enjoy the experience.

Pfft, the Giants won the first game at their new ballpark, period [face_talk_hand]

    Admittedly, it was exhibition

    Was it a Giants/Dodgers game? :p

It was the Brewers who valiantly fell to the Giants

I went to Dodger stadium when I was little—I remember eating cotton candy

What’s your opinion on cotton candy

It’s not bad, but there are far superior sweet snacks; all the great candy & ice cream, for instance- in particular Snickers/Reese’s & Tillamook brand ice cream... my favorite.

    Blech, Tillamook?!

Have you tried it? It's a great, smooth blend; unlike any ice cream out there, at least from those I've had, obviously. Marionberry Pie, Huckleberry & Coffee Almond Fudge are fantastic flavors.

Yes, I’ve tried Tillamook; it was disappointing.

    What’s so great about baseball?

Lots of things- 1) It's a tremendous team game... look at Mike Trout, presently: best player in the game, but can only do so much- one sole playoff appearance to date ('14 Division Series), and was swept in that; 2) Pace... you can unwind, strike up a conversation with somebody about anything, and not lose track of what's going on in the game; 3) The rules concerning the ballparks aren't so universal, and that's a great goddamn thing; aside from the infield dimensions, nothing else is exact/mandated to be, really (the length to an outfield wall can't be shorter than 300 ft., I believe), hence all the different dimensions for ballpark outfields; a double off the Green Monster at Fenway Park is a home run in most other ballparks, and more pop ups are caught near infield in Oakland, because there's so much foul ground there, for example. No other sport is like that; every NBA court, NHL rink & NFL field are the exact same dimensions. And of course, minus the 2020 season, the lack of a DH in the National League, though truthfully it's more than likely going to added there soon, and I'm going to f-u-c-k-i-n-g hate it... won't stop loving the Dodgers/the game, but there'll be a slight hinge of annoyance that won't go away.

    4) Tremendous history... obviously a lot of it not great concerning the lack integration pre-1947, too many disputes between the Players Union & the Owners (most infamously in '94, though things are much calmer now), turning a blind eye to PED's in the late 90's & early Aught's, just to name a few, but, the game has endured... near continuous World Series since 1903; even with the DH added to the A.L. in '73, the expansion of analytics over the past decade, etc, you could take some from the 1920's, sit them down in a ballpark today, and they be able to follow along (same if we were to travel back to 1920)- it's nearly the same game... not quite so for many of the other major sports.

    Favorite parks beside Dodger Stadium?

I haven't traveled much sadly, so in-person ballpark visits have been limited; have been to games at Angel Stadium, Jack Murphy & Petco Park, and from those 3, definitely Petco. Great sightlines throughout, and a great view of the harbor from certain sections of the Top Deck. From afar, Yankee Stadium II, Oracle/AT&T/Pac Bell, Wrigley Field, PNC Park & Wrigley. The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum pre-'95, too.

Have you ever considered applying for a position within the Dodgers organization?

    No, actually.

    Would you want to?

If it had something to do with stadium operations, possibly.

You should consider it! What’s stopping ya?

Nothing, I guess. Definitely have soured on Target, which started to occur pre-COVID. :p

    It’s destiny, Tunick!

Something positive is bound to happen concerning that... hopefully. :p

Do you think you’re generally an Eeyore?

Not that melancholy, but along a similar vein; I'd say some hybrid version of Fred Mertz & Jay Sherman. It's not that I live a terrible life by any means; have a steady job, enough good friends & family, a wonderful chihuahua as the family pet, all the little things that make modern life niiiiice -HDTV, laptop, wireless earbuds, iPhone, etc-, the Dodgers & Lakers being the current champs of their respective sports (last that happened, I was a mere 2-year old!), among other things (binge watching The Office/becoming a fan of that last year, for example).

However, I'm 34 year old without any real personal accomplishments since graduating High School in '04; me & brother had a falling out with our father since '18; too many family members are Trumpers; don't have enough conviction yet to come out as bi to many friends & family (though I've got feeling some suspect, which isn't the worst thing? :p ); all the COVID essential worker frustrations; having to rely on public transit to get to & from work most of the time; the lingering pall of my mental breakdown episode from '08 (coincidentally, that anniversary actually begins today), in that I constantly worry it could happen again in the future, despite 13-years since it occurred.

You got a forum that welcomes you with open arms, too, Tunick.

Well, that was a given, but yes... truly one of the better things in my life.

How do you deal with the Trumpers in your family?

It’s a losing battle, because they just can’t seem to see how, to put it mildly. how dangerous he was/is. He can’t do wrong in their eyes.

You binge-watched The Office—who were your faves?

Stanley, Oscar, Meredith, Phyliss, Darryl, David Wallace, Dwight and Michael.

    No Jim and Pam?

I like the whole cast, and they’re clearly the intergal to the story, but I just the like the others a little more; one of my favorite lines comes from the guy who interviews them at the day care place: “perhaps you’re not as charming as you think you are.”

Btw, the subject of my family’s visit to Dodger Stadium came up just tonight quite coincidentally. As I told you, I was just six or seven and all I cared about was cotton candy and a malt, but apparently the game we went to was a no-hitter. I check the dates—I think it had to be the July 14, 1995 one

    Ahhhhh!!

Never have I seen a no-hitter in person, and I just drafted him/referenced that game in the Baseball draft going on in the Arena. How about that, off all the games to be at!

And there was little old me, not giving a **** with my face buried in a cloud of pink cotton...

Best game you’ve ever been to?

2-games, actually; one in the regular season, the other in the postseason.

    Regular season:

Was at that one with a couple of buddies; we almost left after the top of the 9th, but didn’t, and man, what happened after was just exhilarating beyond belief. Lost my voice after the game.

    Postseason:

Have you noticed the same people in the stands when you go to Dodgers games? Baseball attracts quite the eclectic mix of folks

Well, the usual mix of families, die-hards, those you can tell are either at their first game or are there with others, but would prefer to be elsewhere. But the worst type is the *******, and there’s always one, is the dude who runs around, trying to get The Wave. I loathe The Wave. So bush-league.

However, what may seem like a contradiction, I do very much adore this Dodger Stadium tradition:

Plenty of beachballs hit by yours truly. :p

    Also!

Every now & then I’ve sat in that section of the left field bleachers with that Crosby fellow there, and the regular season ticket holder friends of his: Deep Left, Andre, Benny & Moneyball Steve. Those were also incredibly niiiiice experiences.

Rank the sports from best to worst—let’s see some controversy!

    1) Baseball
    2) Basketball
    3) Football
    4) Soccer
    5) Hockey
    6) Collegiate football
    7) Golf
    8) Tennis
    9) Collegiate basketball
    10) Lacrosse
    11) Motorsports

I don’t enough about cricket to rank it. :p

    Hmm... what about rugby?

Above motorsports, but still low on the list. Too disorganized.

    Boxing.

Never been a big fan, but have a seen a few fights over the years.

    Volleyball.

Slightly interesting, but not worth my time.

    Cor: :(

Sorry. :p Don't let my lack of enthusiasm for it dampen your joy of it.

    Ski jumping.

    Boring.

    Rodeo.

Don’t have an opinion on that.

    Curling.

I’m oddly fascinated by that, especially with how furiously they shave the ice to slow down that hunk of stone.

    Water polo.

No. :p How many more are you going to list?

    This is your life now.

    Quidditch.

I’ve seen 5 Potter films, have enjoyed them all, and thus the scenes with Quidditch.

    Which ones?

The first four & the Death Hollows Part II.

Do the rules of Quidditch withstand scrutiny?

I’m not that familiar with the rules, so sure?

    Hmm. Okay!

So, is there a special Tunick in your life?

No. Have a couple of work crushes, though. :p

Are you willing to share a few details?!

Well one I've got a rather good rapport with; I think she kind of knows I've got a crush on her, which is nice. The other I don't see often, her schedule is a bit different than mine.

Just tell them you’re a JCC regular—they’ll be throwing themselves at your feet!

    Who’s your favorite JCC couple?

David & Cathy/LloydChristmas & xblackout. Each for different reasons- David & Cathy for meeting up with me at my Denny's, aside from their other fine qualities, and Lloyd/blackout for many great discussions about basketball & other things here on the boards (and texting with Lloyd every now & then since January '20)... their great sense of humor as well.

If you were a gangster, what would be your nickname?

    Tiny Tunes, for the irony.

Who from the JCC would be on your crew?

    Ender- Consigliere

    Vin- Underboss

    xblackout/Souderwan/harpua- Capos

Ok, and how bout some soldiers

SLG, Zapdos, PreacherBoy, Diggy, Frieda, tom, Rylo Ken, MyKe (A Chorus of Disapproval), & the spirit of Darth_Snowball.

    Who’s the first hit

Why would I make that announcement public? Wouldn’t be a smart move. ;)

    Oh damn you’re legit

    Nicknames for your crew?

Can’t think of any at the moment. :p

    How bout now

    No; I’m not that clever.

I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 20–what is it?

    3 1/2.

Well, I was thinking of 3, but you had to go and complicate things...

What do you make of all the Harry/Meghan business?

It’s not exactly surprising that there are unsavory, racist elements within the British Royal Family. She clearly went through some extreme stresses, which is clearly bad, but aren’t there more pressing concerns? Something too felt off with two ultra-privileged millionaires airing their grievances to a billionaire.

It’ll never happen, but it would be nice if humanity rid itself of the idea of monarchy. The whole goddamn concept is obscenely ridiculous.

What if you were the king, tho

    I’d abolish the title/institution.

What if that meant eliminating an endless supply of free cigars?

    Smokers always find a way.

So, I have to ask, do you have any concerns about the health effects?

Of course I do, but the problem is I enjoy it still. Genes play a small role in it, too; a lot of old smokers in my family.

    Is there a smoking gene?

I doubt it; it’s more or less how somebody’s genetic makeup can handle certain things. A famous example: Keith Richards.

    Jack Nicholson.

Yeah; makes me kind of forlorned, though, because there's been all sorts of rumors that's he battling with dementia, which is why he's been a hermit basically for the last few years. Had been going to far less Laker games, and was last heard from last year, the day Kobe died.

Who’s your celebrity Mt. Rushmore? (four people)

Nicholson, Eddie Murphy, Lucille Ball & Schwarzenegger.

    And JCC?

Ooooof. Goddamn it. :p Inty, AmazingB, harpua & vin.

I’m not up there? I thought what we had was special, Armen. Special.

4 is a very limiting number for this exercise. :p

You couldn’t give me one of four spots?!

    Bah, I relent

Let’s do some fun word association

    Princess_Tina

    Annoyingly harmless.

    Hmm.

    WAP

    Who?

    Socialism

Like with any social creation, wouldn't be without faults.

    Giants

    Worthy rivals, unlike the Astroholes.

    The bus

    Necessary annoyance

And you don’t want to get a car?

I do, I just fear failing the DMV test again; the last time I took it, I missed passing the written one by 1-answer... the kicker, though, is for one of my wrong answers, I had initially circled the right one, but changed it for some reason. Being that close, and missing due to not trusting my own instinct mentally set me back.

    I think you’re a shoo-in next time!

What’s a common saying or quote that you take issue with?

“It’s better to give than to receive.”

Never mind the inherent contradiction, who the **** doesn’t enjoy receiving say, gifts & such? Please.

So, if you’re visited by JCCers, what would be the ideal visit-Tunick gift they could give you?

Dodger/Laker tickets, a day at Universal Studios or a concert at The Forum.

Okay, and just in case we have some JCCers on a budget, how about a few lower priced suggestions?

Meal at Denny’s, Brent’s Deli or Stonefire Grill (they’ve got my favorite pizza there), a hookah session at Habibi’s Cafe or a movie at the New Beverly Cinema.

Gotcha. So I’ll buy you a nice meal at Olive Garden and tix to Disneyland.

    Ha!

How long do you think you’ll live?

    Into my 70’s at least.

Think the JCC will still be around?

Yes; I’m ridiculously optimistic about its future.

Who or what is really overrated right now?

Fast food chicken sandwiches; people go crazy over the Popeye’s version, Arby’s claims to have “ended the chicken wars”, and McDonald’s added new versions to their menu. Gimme a goddamn break.

    And underrated?

    Superstore...

How can customers help you make a retail job more pleasant?

Don’t ask ridiculously dumb questions/pepper me with ridiculous small talk; don’t need to hear a ‘Good Morning’ from a customer, for instance.

Do you think you’d get along well with Larry David?

    Yes! He’s a curmudgeon’s curmudgeon.

Why are you so grumpy, Armen?

It’s my natural state; growing up on I Love Lucy, Fred Mertz was my favorite character, the one I related to the most. A lot of it is benign grumpiness, where I’m not going to let it ruin my day, etc, but I still find it intellectually bothersome (such as the Lakers seldomly wearing their purple unis anymore or when I hear about 5-10 “good mornings” at work).

    What's wrong with "good morning?"

    A simple 'hello' would suffice.

But what is so objectionable about “good morning?”

It assumes the morning is going well. :p

Well, if you have to be needlessly literal...

Is it the assumption that gets you more than anything?

Yeah; also lately, a lot of comes from co-workers -well meaning, and people I like, mind you- who are passing by the line as we’re unloading the truck, on their way to clock in, and often it’s in middle of stressful, tense situation, so I don’t like small talk at that time. My immediate family could walk by the line, and say hello, and I’d give them a snarl. :p

    Even Mama Tunick?

    The one exception!

    Awww!

What else needs to go away?

The NIT, Europa League, The Carabao Cup/any and all secondary sports tournament. Stick to the main, more prestigious ones.

    What needs to come back?

    NBA on NBC...

Goddamn their coverage was incredibly great; the famous theme, Jordan’s Bulls, the rise of the Shaq-Kobe Lakers, among so many other great NBA happenings. At the very least, the Lakers won (for now) the last game NBC telecast, so there’s that. :p

What are you looking forward to doing once the pandemic winds down?

Being at Dodger game with this view:

Will be beyond niiiiice to see the 2020 title banner from there.

Are the Dodgers, like, your religion?!

    A secular version. :p

    1. I'm almost positive you have met Prenn as well for something at the El Cap or something like that

    2. For different reasons, totally agree about Vegas being great. Late hours, relaxed expectations on what people wear into places, I miss Vegas

    3. When asked what new people would like about LA, you say "Nothing, we're full" and point them to San Jose.

Tunes don’t get your hopes up on new Yankee Stadium. I loathe it. Maybe I’m an old grump, but I just can’t find any joy there.

You’ve got me wrong- I consider the current version Yankee Stadium III; I’m referring to the original place, after the-mid 70’s remodel-‘08.

@Lowbacca_1977 You’re right about PRENN! Error on my part to have forgotten to mention him.

@DarthTunick Honestly, I struggled enough with that that I had to search to put a username to a person. Cuz that was, what, Avengers? All I mostly remember is that we all saw it at midnight independently of plans to see it opening day at like, 11.

My bf loves Vegas too, especially stories of its shady past. His favorite place to stay is the Luxor too. He's actually going back out there next month in order to celebrate his dad's birthday. I'm not able to go, but I think it would work out well if I sent you, Tunick, to be my body double. I'll lend you my "Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism" shirt, and you can follow Jake around all day asking clever and entertaining questions such as, "What's that thing for? Why is that making noise? Is that good? Are the cops coming? That guy's got all red cards in his hand. Is that bad? Are we losing money? Have we lost like a LOT of a lot of money? Are we going to jail? Can we get ice cream now? Is that the pit boss? Do you you think he's chasing me, or is he just always in a big hurry?"

That's fair; it's how I feel about auto-racing: I recognize the skill involved, but it just doesn't do much for me when I watch.

Watch Drive to Survive on Netflix, Tunes. It's had enough impact on getting F1 penetrated (GIGGITY) to the US market that there's now a 2nd US grand prix in Miami from 2022.

Anecdotally it's been huge in growing the F1 audience as evidenced by Reddit, because of the human side. Give it a go.

Think of cricket, as baseball - but with a break for tea and cucumber sandwiches instead of steroids.

I know what it is about chicken sandwich wars. I think Colonel Sanders has a lot to do with it, by making their recipe “secret”.

It is a long process developing a piece of fried chicken. Lots of tweaking with ingredients for the marinade and the dredge.

You put a lot of time and effort into it, and you don’t just want someone replicating that. Mine is marinated in buttermilk, with garlic, truffle oil, golden syrup, and some other stuff. My dredge’s main ingredient is custard powder. The possibilities are literally endless.

All I know about Vegas is when Brits go there for their Honeymoon. Some subsidise the cost of their wedding, most double the cost of it. Lolz.

Please forgive me for starring out your extremely creative circumvention of the swear catcher. I love you, Tunes x

The language filter is goddamn ridiculous; I’m a bit surprised a British-themed casino resort doesn’t currently exist in Vegas.
