The Shade of Samuel Appears to Saul by Salvator Rosa

On the eve of a battle with the Philistines, Saul, the king of Israel feeling himself forsaken by God in a critical hour, consulted a necromancer, the witch of Endor, to know what the future held. He commanded her to call up the spirit of the prophet Samuel. Samuel foretold the worst, that neither Saul nor his sons would survive the morrow. In the ensuing battle his three sons were slain and Saul, wounded, threw himself on his own sword rather than meet death at the hands of the uncircumcised.

The Guardian’s 1000 Artworks You Must See Before You Die

Antonin Artaud was a French avant-garde actor, playwright and artist known for his particular take on surrealism and founding a movement known as the Theater of Cruelty. If you’re a fan of early cinema, you may have seen him work as an actor in Abel Gance’s epic Napoleon or Dreyer’s Passion of Joan of Arc. His work in the theater was less . . . accessible. Artaud believed that theater should not be an escape for the audience, but that theatrical performances should confront the audiences with the “crime, love, war or madness” of reality. In lieu of presenting any other visual artworks by Artaud in this post, here’s an excerpt from a “plot” summary of Artaud’s 1925 play, Spurt of Blood.

“A giant hand appears and grabs the Whore's hair, which bursts into flames. A Thunderous Voice says, “Bitch, look at your body,” after which the Whore's dress becomes transparent and her body appears hideous and naked underneath. In turn, she bids God leave her and she bites the wrist of the hand, sending an immense jet of blood across the stage.

The lights come up and almost everyone is dead and scattered across the stage. The Young Man and the Whore are still alive and they are mid-coitus and eating each other's eyes. The Nurse enters carrying the body of the Young Girl, which hits the ground and is “flat as a pancake.” The Nurse's chest has become completely flat as well. The Knight enters demanding more cheese and the Nurse responds by lifting her dress.”

In December of 1946, when Artaud drew this self-portrait, he had been addicted to laudanum for over twenty-five years and had just been released from a mental institution where he had been receiving electroshock therapy for three years. It’s not beautiful by any means, but it captures something very human and there’s something strange and haunting in the eyes. Something damaged and sad.

A little over a year after this portrait, Artaud would be diagnosed with cancer and he would die only two months after that from a self-administered overdose of chloral hydrate. He was only 51.
