JCC A Thread For Artwork Ver 2 (See first post rules before posting)

Happy New Year everyone. My last doodle of 2023, a homage to half of a lovely panel by Marco Checchetto from the Devil’s Reign #2 where an imprisoned and depowered Sue Storm and Reed Richards kiss before being separated by guards for finishing a fight they didn’t start.

Except that I borked Reed… so it’s just Sue.

DR scribe Chip Zdarsky liked it.

I’ve been trying to draw this panel for almost two years now, so to draw Sue was a nice way to close out 2023.

Brass Mask with Crested Helmet (Before 1897) – The Edo
Media: Brass, Iron
Location: British Museum

This mask was of a type used in loyalty rituals where high-ranking officials/soldiers would swear allegiance to the Oba. The mask is intended to represent Oranmiyan, the founder of the Benin Empire, at least according to legend. Note the four vertical lines above each eye; those depict some of the ritualistic scarification carried out by the Edo. The pupils of the eyes are inlaid iron.

This one’s pretty striking. The bared teeth and the wide eyes create a pretty compelling face.

Next time, we’ll take a quick trip back to the State Collection in Berlin for one last look at their collection of Benin artworks and it’s probably my second favorite of all of the stuff we’ve looked at from Benin.
