The questions that need to be answered are:
    1. How did Snoke corrupt Ben?
    2. How did Snoke take control of the defeated Empire?
    3. What was Snoke doing during and before I-VI?

The long-game can answer #2 and #3....as in, Ep10,11,12. But only #1 needs to be answered in this trilogy. And I'm betting that's all that gets answered in this trilogy. The new EU books might start touching on #2 and #3, not even fleshing it out, before Ep9 ends.

I disagree, I thought he just sounded so damn over the top generically evil. BRRRIIIIIINNNGGGG HEEEERRRR TOOOOO MEEEEEEEE. If he truly knew Leia before, I wonder how she didn't suspect him of being evil considering his demon voice.

I think that, at the very least, they need to answer what Snoke is, or represents. I don't mean what alien species he is, or what his exact political role is, but he needs at least one more dimension to him, because he's really flat and undefined as-is. At the very least, we should know what Snoke wants.

If Snoke just winds up being a fall guy for Kylo's eventual rise to power, then it's okay to just leave Snoke to a bare minimum, but if he's the ultimate bad guy here, more Snoke exposition is needed so that we know what the stakes are. A lot of that could touch on 2 and 3.

I'm worried about the books explaining who Snoke is, because in that case, it could go in the direction of "Darth Plagueis' brother" and would ultimately show that the creative brains behind the new movies really don't care. That he's really just "Emperor Part 2: 'Cause We Needed A Voldemort."

Yeah, I have a feeling it will be just that. Kinda like introducing Kanan and Ezra after we all thought the Jedi were purged, extinct, and Luke was the last of the jedi.

Basically, someone that is not exactly catagorized as a sith lord with the rule of two lineage as we knew it. But a parallel or offshoot of a dark side force user that watched from the sidelines, survived by staying in the shadows, and now has decided to come out and get involved in the action of the GFFA. His background not really emphasized or fleshed out completely until after 8 or 9---and likely in the form of novels, or comics.

And Sheev didn't, really? That guy had one of the most over-dramatic evil/sadistic voice in movie history. By comparison, Snoke was positively subdued, and he comes off as far less sadistic by comparison as well, which I liked.

Well I never compared him to Sheev. Both of them are pretty bad. The original Emperor from ESB sounded great though.

Archetypal villains are supposed to sound generic. They represent universal essences. This is Star Wars, not everyday realism.

Even when the devil presents himself as human in narrative, there's always that moment when we get the archetypal, generic signs of Devilness.

They better have something good up their sleeves for Snoke. TFA left me missing Sheev and I noticed that they threw out the coolest aspects of the concept art and made Snoke look as much like a Sheev clone as they possibly could (they put a dark cloak over his gold/white cloak and instead of having half his face chipped off they gave him a scar resembling Sheev's forehead).

Hang in there. They've only teased his character, really, and JJ did say he was hugely important to the story. We'll get a better sense of him in VIII, I'm sure.

You would think Luke would at least have to tell Rey in the upcoming movie where the top bad guy came from and how he took power and corrupted Ben.

The problem is people are so brain damaged from this debate, they don't understand that dead means dead and new character means new character (not merely new name, duh). And so they go down the semantic rabbit hole instead of paying attention to Pablo's negative attitude about the Plagueis theories. He is not a fan of them, and that means all of his comments should be read as literal statements -- not connotative games.

The deformed part of his face (and body) is still here but it's hidden by the shadows. It's true he looks a bit generic in the film, but in the vfx video you can see him with the darkness removed and he actually looks less like palpatine v2 and more like the twisted sculpture we saw. So I think he'll look better in ep8 when he won't be just a hologram. His distinctive features will be more visible.

As long as Snoke is not seen physically -> he is the force ghost of Plaegious.

Lmao this is exactly what i was thinking. Its been known since around comic-con last year that Snoke is an absolutelty new character and you still get people believing in stupid theories

I'm not the greatest Sheev Palpatine fan, but he has his moments when I think he is pretty neat. Snoke has none of those.

Well in the game's story, the Emperor was waiting for two things. One to have a sole son (he got twins and needed one to die to know who was stronger) second was for the survivor to both be strong enough physically and to have the control over the force. He was just waiting for his son to give him opening to attack him and force his way into the body of the son that was trying to kill him.

So for Ben, it could be he was waiting for him to be more willing or in control of the force, or so that he was stronger.

Right but Snoke isn't a "darksider" as far as we understand him. Though he does seem to connect to the dark side of the force, he's not a sith and doesn't quiet follow their rules.

I think it has been one of the theories that some fans have suffered the most to let go. I ended up hating it, to be honest. I am experiencing the same right now with the whole Reylo stuff (I blame 50 shades of Grey).

Btw PlagueisWise, here you have another evidence about how Snoke is not Plagueis. Just in case ;)

How did Snoke manage to corrupt Ben from under Luke's nose... pretty simple it went like this-

*Snoke turns up at the academy and approaches Ben

Snoke: Hey Ben, want to come and join the darkside
    Ben: ......
Snoke: We wear black, we are moody and oh so edgy, come on your cool right....
    Ben: Yeah
    Snoke: So
    Ben: Ok

It seemed to be a interesting conversation, maybe Ben wanted to be Luke's successor but Luke decided he was not ready to hand over the order or had chosen another to lead the jedi forward angering Ben, Ben destroyed the order & was found by Snoke on a unknown planet who claimed he recognized his potential choosing to teach him.

    My guesswork:
    1. Ben was ripe for being corrupted. He was already in awe of his powerful grandfather. Snoke presented Ben a gateway to that lifestyle.
    2. By campaigning for a suitable replacement of the Empire, The First Order, and appealing to those likeminded people to make it happen.
    3. Biding his time in the shadows, creating a quiet but formidable reputation among the underworld.
