Amph Better Call Saul (Spoilers within)

I don't think she's playing him. I think she's going all-in. Married people cannot be compelled to testify against each other.

You could easily be right, though. This show isn't predictable.

 

Well, marriage won't prevent Kimmy and Jimmy ERRRRR Saul going at each other in the courtroom.

I don't think Kim is playing Jimmy. She's too good of a person to do that. However, I do think it's a way to see how Jimmy would react to the thought of marriage. Either their relationship ends that night or they put a ring on it.

 

My annual reminder that we hate Chuck because he was right about Jimmy.

 

I would've hated Chuck even if he was wrong about Jimmy.

 

Also the college film students are always great. They should get the next spinoff.

 

It's more complicated than that, I think. Yes, Jimmy always had the impulses Chuck feared, but he also pushed his brother with his hostility and doubt. It was somewhat a self-fulfilling prophecy.

 

Yeah, I would agree with that. Chuck was fine with Jimmy when Jimmy worked in the mail room, but despised Jimmy when Jimmy got his law degree. Chuck didn't think that someone of Jimmy's ilk was deserving to have a license to practice law. Perhaps if Chuck took Jimmy under his wing and instead of being adversarial we would have gotten a straight James Morgon McGill, esq., instead of Saul Goodman. But that's not the show we'd watch. At least, I don't think we would. Better Call Saul is a freaking Greek tragedy where the main character constantly is his own worse enemy.

 

And I wildly agree and also disagree. Jimmy was bad from the time he was a kid. Perhaps Chuck could have changed him, perhaps not.

I don't think Chuck could have totally "changed" him. I do think that he could've kept him from becoming Saul Goodman. Chuck's ego got in the way. He expected his younger brother to stay a mail clerk and live in the elder's shadow.

 

Gould touched on this a bit in one of the podcasts, he came down squarely that who you are is the result of your decisions, not your genes. But on both shows, for me, it’s the titular characters ingrained faults (genetic) that lead to those decisions. They can’t help themselves, and not even a strong woman at their side can guide them down the right path.

I’ve been thinking about Kim’s fate more and more, ibviously I don’t think things go well for her, but I don’t think she’s destryed, either. Skyler is certainly beaten down at the end, but she’s taken charge of her life again, rather than following Walt and getting disappeared. I suspect something similar for Kim.

 

Kim made a huge mistake going to Lalo.

 

Oh yeah. Wish I had seen that before making my last post. All bets are off. Run, Kim, run!!!

 

Was there any doubt, from the instant the blood first splattered on Saul‘s shirt, that Mike was there?

 

I loved the disdain in Jimmy's eyes when Mike put on the space blanket to stay warm. I bet he saw a glimpse of his brother for an instant. I loved the use of the green and orange light in that scene too.

I need to watch the episode again, but any idea what Lalo said to Kim in Spanish when she said he was Jimmy's wife. The impression I got from the inflection was, "Wow, good for him."

 

Yes, that's basically what he said.

 

I completely missed the significance of the space blanket until I heard the podcast.

 

I thought it was the twins. Even when it emerged that it was a lone figure, I didn't think of Mike.

I loved the bit with him removing the fuel cap. Classic Fring.

As for that last cartel member that was hunting Jimmy and Mike, I thought the plan would to be to lure him out of the SUV and Mike would snipe him and then they would take his truck and drive back home instead of continuing walking. I also thought they may go back to the abandoned cars where Jimmy was held up and fix the flat tires on one of the vehicles and drive home. If there wasn't spare tires, I'm sure they just could have taken tires from the other vehicles.

At least Mike noted why walking at night would be a bad idea.

 

I also expected Jimmy and Mike to somehow get their hands on the SUV. I thought maybe they'd build a fire and lure the the SUV driver to it as a trap, but after hearing the pod cast, they seemed really excited about that stunt of flipping it multiple times. It was two rolls away from a Guinness World Record I think.

Also from the pod, the writers mathematically figured out how much the money would have weighted in real life, assuming it was all $100s, and took some liberties with it for the episode because it would have been way to heavy for Jimmy to carry that much weight.

Lastly, there was a funny story about snakes in the pod. I won't ruin it here, but check it out if you have the time.

 

When Kim started to shout at Lalo, I thought it was going to be silly. I like how she talked him down from goin' a-murderin' again.

I don't think he's dumb enough to fully buy her "some kids shot up his car and pushed it into a ditch" explanation, but she had a good point about him not having anyone to trust. It made him think about just who was involved with the shootout.

 

Only just realize it, but she gave Lalo the answer he needed.

Also, I really don’t think it’s a coincidence that Gene lives in the state Kim is originally from.
