I've been reading alot of Carl Hiaasen, and also Jack Mcdevitt. I used to read Robert Jordan books. I really liked his story, but it seems it'll never end. His last book didn't progress it at all. That and he's taking too long between books.

Varza, you must have read my mind, I was going to post a topic on books, what people like and recommend to read. I'm such a picky reader. If the book hasn't got me interested by the third chapter I don't finish it. I'm always looking for a book that grabs me from the beginning and makes me read it through to conclusion.
    Some of my favorites are:

Early Stephen King, especially "The Stand", (I also loved the mini-series they did, have it on VHS, it made me cry at the end)
    Lord of the Rings
    Harry Potter series
Ender's Game-Orson Scott Card, what an awesome book this is! I highly recommend it to anyone who has not read it.
    Rhapsody-Elizabeth Haydon
    Robot books by Isaac Asimov
Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon-Anne McCaffrey
All the Weyrs of Pern-Anne McCaffrey
Lord Foul's Bane and the other 5 books after it-Stephen R. Donaldson-one of my all time favorite series
Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune-Frank Herbert
    Darkover Novels-Marion Zimmer Bradley
Parable of the Sower,Parable of the Talents-Octavia Butler
    Dreamsnake-Vonda McIntyre

There are so many it's hard to remember them all. :)

Earths Children Series by Jean Auel
    the EU until Vector Prime
    Anne Rice
    HP Series (thats a shocker!)
Enders Games - awesome! and Speaker of the Dead
Battlefield Earth (awesome book, crappy movie)
    anything by Jane Austen
    Shakespear
trashy romances by Johanna Lindsey, Jane Feather, Judith McNaught
    Tami Hoag
    Joseph Campbell....

I have a bunch more though

I also like Jane Austen books, and still have my copies of the early romances by Johanna Lindsey, Rosemary Rogers, Kathleen Woodiwiss. Some of them are first edition paperbacks. I can't seem to let them go and have been carting them around since I bought them back in the late 70's and early 80's.
I also loved Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth". That's the only I have read of his works so far.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger in a Strange Land, both by Heinlein. I have always enjoyed his writing. (has anyone actualy read Job: A comedy of Justice? I really enjoyed that one, but no one seems to know about it.)

Also, Sun Tzu's Art of War and some of the other Military Works of China. It is a bit dry but very interesting to analyze.

the Sunne of Spenldor is a great book as well - about Richard the 3rd, but it goes from another point of view that Richard wasn't evil and killed his nephews. It was wonderful! A little hard to get started but its worth getting thru it

Labyrinth of Evil was a great EU book
Tales of the bounty hunters is another
    Tales from Jabba's palace
    Shadows of the Empire
    Cestus Deception

    and a Non-EU book:
[face_skull] Lords of Chaos-this book is an interesting one that talks about the Norweigen Black Metal scene and how before it was popular, explains about how members of certain bands commited crimes like murder and arson. It is crazy how that whole scene turned into chaos after it was made. If you are a metalhead and are into the crazier side of metal, it is a must look at book. [face_skull]

Jango I've read Lords of Chaos. I'll read almost any book about music. That one was really good. There is another called Sounds of The Beast, The history of heavy metal. It starts at Sabbath, and goes all the way through to todays metal. It's a great read, lots of good stories, and bands you may have forgotten about.

Instead of individual books, I pretty much love anything these authors write:

Love anything by George R.R. Martin

Stephen King (except you're right, Melkor, he sucked for a while there, but now he's back)

    Tolkien

    Lloyd Alexander

I like Robert Jordan, but you're right, Chris, it is interminable!

    Terry Goodkind

    Brian McNaughton

    Robert Bloch

    Patricia A. McKillip

    Barbara Hambly

    David Eddings

Gecko, how could you hate Miss Spider's Tea Party? It's a great read! How all these characters were effectively "judging a book by its cover" only to have the protagonist be redeemed by showing mercy on a perceived enemy. It gets me here every time!
