Good points there. Not sure how I could answer those counter points creatively.

The red arm looks significantly better here and in the Comic Con vid than it has in those leaked images. I like.

Looks like the same arm he's always had minus the gold plating. No expert here, but when gold oxidizes it can sometimes turn a red/maroon/rust

    ps. Amy Schumer rules

Do you think it would drive Anthony Daniels crazy to know that there's no "Anthony Daniels in Episode VII" thread?

Yeah I just figured that he's an old robot, his warranty long ago run out.
So he's being repaired with whatever spare parts can be scrounged up.

Maybe that becomes a running gag through these movies.

I think it would be better if he was to get "cleaned up" and maybe brought back to his former glory through the ST... So by Episode IX he is visually much like he was in the ROTS.

I like the idea of having C-3PO being such an old model, there's no new spare parts being produced. It would be hilarious if, sometime in the ST, 3PO stumbles upon some pile of old droid parts and shouts out in joy "By the maker! Spare parts!!" :D

Yeah, but doesn't he just really need to have his gold plating restored?

It'd be real cool too see 3PO with some upgrades and new plating, but of course still being the old droid we love.

I'm betting it's from a red protocol droid, and not rust. If it were rust, you'd expect to at least have some rusty patches elsewhere on him.

With the latest rumors about Leia having a new assistant droid that is not C-3PO and the new X-Wings having BB-8 units as astromecs, I wonder what is the role of the old droid due for the comming movies. Based on MSW leaked plot, they just seem to have a cameo. Which is a bit wierd to me. I always expected R2 to be the main droid of the ST and basically play the part BB-8 is playing as the sidekick droid of the main hero.

Yeah, I also find it quite odd taken how much they've been using R2 to market their new films. R2 is literary all over the place when it comes to marketing, so if he ends up only having a cameo in TFA I'd say its freaking close to false advertising.

And what's the point of giving C-3PO a completely "new" arm if he's just in a small cameo. I just don't get it. Its as if Disney and JJ are saying: "Hey, come watch our new Star Wars film, all your favourite characters are back but they're just in it for a few seconds".

I'd be really ticked off if R2 and 3PO just have cameo appearances.

We have the Big 3 Mains and then we have the Big 3 Sidekicks.

Sidekicks in the PT it is - Jar Jar, C3PO and R2D2
Sidekicks in the OT it is - Chewbacca, C3PO and R2D2

With the introduction of BB8 will this go to 4 sidekicks? (BB8, Chewbacca, C3PO and R2D2)

Is BB8 just the 1st new sidekick introduced of a new Big 3 Sidekicks?

Will Chewie, 3PO and R2 be phased out and replaced?

I suspect they'll follow the PT idea of BB8 fading into the background as the story progresses like Jar Jar did in the PT.

What they do with Chewie after Han's death is another matter though...

I don't know if I agree with that G-FETT. Why go to all the trouble of designing this new droid for him to fade into the background. I think George was forced to push Jar Jar into the background due to the overwhelming hate for the character.
I admit I am getting quite worried about the old droids in the new movie. Now Leia has ANOTHER new droid? WHY????

The old droids are dead, long live the new droid.

Let's face it Threepio and Artoo were fantastic characters to introduce back in the late seventies but must have been a nightmare for the writers due to their lack of mobility. They even got around this in the PT by having Artoo 'fly'. For the ST they have introduced a new, more mobile droid who can actually keep up with the main characters during chase sequences, etc.

Well, it wasn't any extra work for them. It's not as if they recycled the old costume and then had to go through an extra step to build a new arm. They built an all-new 3PO costume, so just coloring one arm red wasn't a big deal for them. As for the point-- I'd imagine it's just to show the passage of time, and keep things somewhat realistic. I really don't think his red arm is going to have any significant relevance to the story, regardless of how big or small his role in the film is.
