    We need a Tusken thread.

Enough of us want to do Tuskens (or at least seem interested in doing one), and I think we can throw together something really REALLY cool for C3.

First off, check out this site. Be patient with it -- it's coming straight from the Fiji islands, and the connection's VERY VERY slow.

    http://www.jacksfiji.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=jacks&Category_Code=011

The item in the top left of the catalog that pops up is the traditional Fiji war club (a Totokia) that they used for the base of the gaderiffi (gaffi) Tusken beatin' stick. After shipping, if we do a group buy, me and a buddy (TK432) have estimated them to be around $169. We're gonna try talking to the guy and try getting them for cheaper since we'll be doing a big order (8-10 at least). IF WE CAN DO IT, who would be interested in getting one?

I'll post more on Tuskens and getting the costumes going if there's enough interest. If not, this thread will turn into another lightbulb thread, except I'll be making Tusken noises instead of saying "lightbulb."

DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN!!! :D

    EDIT: Added classification tag...

OUCH! You don't like Jeff's idea of making them? That would be $338 for us, & you too if Rachel does one.

Actually, I wanted to make my own, too. :D

But I thought that after Mr. 432 found that site, I should at least post it. I mean, you can't deny that it's not COOL. :)

Really, tho', I want an all metal one that I can keep in my car for those...uhhhh...days when...I might need to scrape the ice off my windshields.

    Yeah, that's it.

I guess this means there isn't much interest in importing Tokowhoosies from Fiji? :)

I might be interested, depending on the cost and when I would have to pay the cash. I have alot of my funds going to my Fett. I would also like to do a Scout. But a tusken would be cool.

First I want to do a Scout and a Snowtrooper (and the E-Web). After that, I'd love to doa Tusken, especially if we did it as a group.

Can you say costume party? [face_devil]

We need one real soon :D I think Jeff could make most of that out of metal, not sure what I'm talking about, but you guys talked about it?

Well, going with the Fiji club, the prices came down to:

$154.75 each if we order 8.

$163.75 each if we only order 4.

    Still expensive.

Making the club part would be time consuming, tho', meethinks. Yeah, it could be lathed on some parts, but we gotta think about DH's free time and willingness to do it. A good lightsaber takes quite a few hours.

That, and even though I almost want to order a Fiji club, I'd probably still want the poker end to be machined, instead of doing the finned poker. I want something that looks kinda like a gear shaft.

I think, tho', that for the most part the costume itself will be relatively cheap. If DH can lathe the initial helmet pieces, we could cast them in a nice shiney non-lead pewter like Pewter 7 for the chrome-like finish. I could start working on the mold shapes for the Tusken male and female, too.

I want to do the female one BAD!!! What's wrong with aluminum parts for the mask? I agree it will take a long time to do the gaffi stick thing (I think thats what it is called). Jeff loves to build things, he will be somewhat busy this summer, so we will just have to see?

Nothing wrong at all with aluminum parts for the mask -- that's why I started the thread -- so we could all get on the same page and maybe attempt to have some sort of coherency and maybe look like we're from the same tribe or something, if everyone's cool with that?

That, and I think it'll be easier on all of us if we work together and do multiples of a single part instead of everyone grinding at the last minute to finish lots of individual pieces. :)

BF88...Oooo. Nice Tusken face. I can see why they're selling it, tho' -- you'll suffocate if you put it on, and the eyeholes can't be moved, so you can either see really well out of it, or not at all. :) It'd be just as much work to make it wearable as making our own from the ground up. :D Also can't make copies since it's all epoxied together already.

I remember DH saying that somebody had a Tusken helmet base. If the helmet base is from a certain popular costuming web site, I know the guy fairly well and would prefer to do my own sculpt instead of copy his. It's a great looking piece, but I know he'd prefer others to do their own work. I know I would. :)

SC...WAIT! Aluminum parts. Doh. Now I know what you mean. If DH wants to do them all and reap the benefits, that's fine with me. ;) I'm just concerned about how much time he'd have to spend on 2 eye pieces, 4 horns, 2 cheek pieces, and the mouth/nose piece, and then doing them for a whole tribe. :D If he's up for it, that's all good.

The females don't have those pieces, so if he wanted to concentrate on that, and I start on the female mask molds, we could make good progress.

Did you want me to look up the dimensions of the mask pieces, since I can vaguely remember him saying that he needed a new project? LOL. [face_laugh]

If the interest is there, I'll put off doing Biker Scout and Snowtrooper costumes in order to be part of the tribe. :D

Yes, we are in :D Jeff doesn't know yet but he will soon. He can do the pieces for the masks, I don't think it will be that hard, the hard part might be finding the right size of aluminum so he doesn't have to lathe much. Then again I don't really know what I'm talking about.

TK, I would love to do the female version, how much do you think that would cost? Would most of it be out of leather? Help me out here :D

SC...As hot as Tusken women probably are under those 30 layers of protective clothing, I've never actually looked at them closely. ;) I'll need to dig out my action figure (I'm sure I have one somewhere) and start poking around for pics. If I remember right, along with the gold mask, there were dangly plates here and there and some other ornate danglies. I'm pretty sure we can vac the pieces or use Sintra for most of it.

    I don't think it'd be too expensive.

I somewhat got my head on straight last night to start on stuff, but I promised the little girl we'd play with clay tonight, so I should have something fairly well-started by tomorrow.

The horns/tusks/eyes can be done on the lathe, but every Tusken I've seen so far has a resin "tooth" piece that's been painted a metallic color. Can Jeff do irregular pieces like that, or should I plan on fitting a sculpt of that in with everything?

    One issue, though...

DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW I CAN FIND THE RIGHT FABRIC FOR THE TUSKEN ROBES????

It's a heavy weave, like the Jedi robes. Somewhere between canvas and a gunney sack, I think. I suck at fabric scavenger hunts, but it seems like a few people are one with the Force when it comes to finding stuff like that.

I can handle the fabric part of the outfits :D This is going to be so COOL!!! You can only lathe round things & lines going around, nothing else, I'm pretty sure. I'll make him come down her & check out the thread, k?
