I don't personally hate River Song..I don't at all, but her exploits with the Doctor were mostly documented through her blue journal... We didn't actually see them get together that often which is why I can't form an opinion whether I like her as a companion. I don't see the interaction.

The favourite/least favourite companion and favourite/least favourite companion discussion is always interesting. Personally, I like them all because my favourite thing about the show is that it can change and re-invent itself, and the different companions and doctors is part of that. There are things I like and dislike about all the doctors and all the companions.

For example, I like series 1 Rose. She's inquisitive, she wants to learn more about the universe, she makes mistakes, realizes she makes mistakes and learns from the consequences. Even though her character arc grows to become solely about the Doctor, I like how in series 1, she doesn't make herself just about her love interest, she actively pursues what she believes to be a better way of living her life. As the show goes on, she becomes selfish, self-centered and, IMO, unheathily obsessed with the Doctor and the impact of her exit is completely ruined by her reappearance in Series 4.

If I have to have a favourite companion, it's Donna. She had so much character growth. It seems like every one hated her when she first appeared, because she was loud, mouthy, not particularly clever and kind of rude. And yet when you see her self-loathing, and how she sees herself as a failure, and her mouthiness is a shield against the world, you really feel for her. And through her adventures, she learns to be more confidant and self-assured. Her friendship with the Doctor is really beautiful to see.

I have mixed feelings on Martha, Amy, Rory and River that could probably take up an entire post. Martha was never really memorable. I liked the concept of her character, but looking back I never really engaged with her character. She was a little bland, which is sad, because she could have been really awesome. I really like how she left the Doctor on her own terms and I really liked her when she showed up on Torchwood. I love Amy and Rory together (my favourite thing about series 6 is how the Doctor had two companions instead of one), but the "does Amy want Rory or does she want the Doctor?" question was drawn out for way too long, IMO, to the detriment of all characters. River was really intriguing when she was first introduced, but looking back at her entire story, I find her to be not as interesting because it's like her entire existence revolves around the Doctor and I don't understand how she came to love him in the first place. I feel like I can't comment on Clara yet, because IMO she only has minor character development, not enough for me to engage with. When I'm watching the show, it feels like she's there because the show has to have a companion, rather than she's there because she chooses to be there. I'm hoping that things will get better for her in the future.

... I feel like I should shut up about Doctor Who now. [face_laugh]

I believe that was my fault. lol

Maybe I was looking through rose colored glasses (forgive the unintentional pun) at the end of the Rose arc, but I never saw the obsession until you mentioned it now. I think she truly was in love with the doctor though. Granted sometimes love can birth obsession if a person isn't careful.

As for Amy, while Donna was very opinionated while being "rude", I found Amy to be insufferable the way she would tell people to shut up. She wasn't colorful to me, she was just rude and and she said things that made me want to grit my teeth.

All I will say about Clara is that I feel she's a huge Mary Sue and what they chose to do with her in the series 7 finale seemed to be the writers thumbing their noses at all previous companions ever. It feel it cheapened the show and . . . Yeah, Mary Sue. Grr.

My Kindle has been plugged in for an hour and isn't charging very well . . .

Anyone have any fun plans for the summer? I've got a trip to Phoenix in August, going to see Train and The Script in concert on 7 August. Which is a month after my birthday, which is a month from today!

EmeraldJediFire I don't think it was intended to be read as obsessive, but it ended up coming off that way anyway. It's really clear that Russel T Davies loved Rose, as she was the first companion he wrote, and I think in some ways Rose encompasses the obsessive love Doctor Who fans have for the show and the Doctor's character. The daydream of being a practically immortal, wonderful, brilliant, beautiful human-looking alien's "one true love" isn't exactly uncommon among fans, and Rose was like the audience avatar for that dream. ;) River Song is similar in that regard, and her character development also suffers because of it, IMO.

Plans for the summer? I get to work during the summer! Yayy! I'm technically on vacation right now. :p

How did that go..the one question...

    11th: What question?

    Doctor...who?

Hah hah, yea how many times are we going to use that pun in the series.

Well, I'm about to go to Chicago next week for a week.

As for the Doctor's themselves..my first was of course the 9th Christopher Eccelston (sp?). I felt like his tenure was too short though.I liked him a lot till the 10th came along. 11th wasn't bad.. correction, I use to be irritated with him until he seriously thought about all the pain he'd brought to his companions. then I had respect for him

    Huzzah!

I just found Rose annoying and she got worse towards the end of her arc, and obsessed is a good word to use.

Martha was just kinda 'there'. I didn't dislike her, but I didn't find her that interesting. But I did like how she left, they didn't do the whole stereotypical 'KILL HER OFF' thing.

I'm in the middle of watching Donna's series right now (I've been watching it in a weird order). I like that she doesn't really have any romantic feelings for the Doctor, and her personality is just so fun to watch

I liked both Amy and Rory (who doesn't want a man like Rory?). I enjoyed how there were two of them, but the whole love triangle thing was predicted from the start and got old fast.

Even though River isn't really a companion and she doesn't show up regularly, I love her and Eleven. She does appear a few times in series 7 for those of you who haven't watched it (I have yet to see the second half of series 7 so I can't really comment beyond that or on Clara).

Edit: as for summer plans, I've got a boring June and July, but in August I have my cousin's wedding about 8 hours away in Edmonton, Alberta, then a week after that, my friend and I are going to London, England for a week!

What do you normally watch, J_L?

EmeraldJediFire, have fun on your trip! And I do like that picture you posted. Made the Sherlockwho fan in me smile.

Briannakin, oooh, you are lucky to be going to London! Sounds like it will be a spectacular trip. :)

Strangely, a lot of my friends are moving to the UK within the next year. Three are going as part of a year-long overseas supply teaching gig and another is permanently moving to Scotland. I would love to visit, but I can't afford it now, what with grad school coming up and all. I almost accepted an offer of admission for an MFA acting program in England, but it's over $20,000 Canadian a year and I don't have that kind of money, even with scholarships and grants and loans. :(

Ouch $20,000? Did that include room and board? Depending on how this trip turns out, with the wheelchair assesiblity, I may do a semester in the UK (probably Ireland or Scotland as it is typically cheaper there than it is in England) in either 2014 or 2015.

Probably 80% of the time it is the Investigate Discovery channel and shows like: "Who'd the BLEEP Did I Marry", "Deadly Woman", "Deadly Sins", "Deadly Affairs", "Scorned: Love Kills", "Dates From Hell", and "Stalked". If somebody is getting murdered or stalked I am usually watching it. They are all true stories.

10% of the time I am watching the Cartoon Network and shows like Robot Chicken and Adult Swim shows. I also love the TV shows Archer and Family Guy.

The other 10% of the time I watch Californication and Shameless which is either on HBO or some other premium channel.

    I rarely watch anything else.

Ack! I am not looking forward to paying for my kids' college in a few years. I am really hoping my son can get into a US Military Academy. My youngest can't go that route because of his medical condition, so I am probably going to have to pay out the nose for his tuition.

Yes, that amount does, but only if you're slumming it with the flat you choose (which my dad wouldn't allow since he would want to make sure I was in a decent, safe area) and you're careful about what you buy to eat. It wouldn't be as bad if I could work and study at the same time, but the programme structure doesn't give you enough time off. You're basically at school for eight hours a day, seven days a week, for two years, with a few weeks off here and there.

Edit - Jedi_Lover, unfortunately I don't recognize any of those shows except for Family Guy, which I've never seen since it's really not my thing.

Not to be pedantic, but Ireland isn't part of the UK. Northern Ireland, however, is.

That said, if you get a chance to do it, GO. The best week of my life was the one I spent in Dublin.

Sorry, British Isles, then. I'm a history major who hates Geography :p I think the Isle of Man would also be a awesome place to spend a semester.

Idrelle, I don't recognize any of those shows either, so don't worry.

It's usually said when someone says something that is unusual when it's perfectly normal for the other person. Like if someone complained about only eating one kind of thing every day, I could reply with 'welcome to my world' because that's pretty much what I do.

Oh, and I'm feeling badass right now. The light fitting in my room broke the other day and I just replaced it. It's one of those pendulum ones and it was the thing that the bulb goes into that broke. Four screws in all so it was easy, but still, great job satisfaction!

I'm reading all this Doctor Who discussion while listening to the Magnum P.I theme. Wonder what that says about me.

I will unabashedly admit that Ten is my Doctor. I'll admit to liking Rose and loving Nine/Rose and Ten/Rose, but Donna is definitely my favorite companion for her growth over the course of her time with the Doctor (which of course makes her fate in Journey's End suck). I do actually like Martha, but I hated the way Ten treated her (RTD writing her as having a crush on the Doctor probably didn't help matters) and agree her exit at the end of S3 was awesome. She left with her head high, on her own terms, and without looking back, and I loved that.

As for Amy. Well, let's just say I like her better when Rory's around and leave it at that. I fully admit to being a River fangirl (even when everybody around me in other places bashed her) since she first showed up in Silence of the Library. Matt and Alex's chemistry sells Eleven/River for me and though I haven't always been fond of her arc (the second have of s6 falls flat for me and I felt didn't execute well most of the stuff that the first half set up.), and I'll be sad if we don't see her anymore in S8. As for Clara, I like the energy that's between her and Eleven and I kind of disagree that she's a Mary Sue. I rather thought her arc was set up rather well and I've always thought the Doctor is at his best when he has something to solve (which is Clara in this case).

I'm still upset we're not going to get a S8 with Eleven and Clara. It'll definitely be interesting to see how things go between Clara and Twelve, whoever that turns out to be.

LexiLupin, yeah, I agree with everybody else, I like the Shakespheare Code, but that really isn't an ep that one should introduce Who to I would have gone with Dalek in S1 (as it sets up the Doctor's history with the Daleks perfectly and it's IMO Christopher Eccleston's best performance as the Doctor), Father's Day (yeah, the monster is a bit silly, but the acting is stellar in my view), or just start right out with S5 and The Eleventh Hour (as the slate's pretty much wiped clean storywise, and you don't really need to ask "Who is he?" or "What is that?" and such).

Oh yeah, if you do go to Ireland (as in the Republic of Ireland), don't ever say it's in the UK, people won't like it. *lol* UK is England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain the island which holds England, Scotland, and Wales. I imagine it'd be kinda like if I went to Canada and said it was in the US. :p Ireland and England have some not-so-good history. Although I'm always amazed by how little people know about it. I think though, that when you live somewhere you automatically think it's more important and more well-known than it actually is.

My plans this summer mostly involve art. I'm confirmed for one con for artists' alley, waiting to hear back from two others. Then I'm going to Celebration in Germany, and some of my friends are coming to visit at various points as well. Other than that I'll be drawing and painting and hopefully writing as well.

Don't feel bad, J_L, I don't watch these shows either. I don't really watch TV at all. I've been watching Once Upon A Time and Supernatural, although I'm behind on both of those because I just never get around to watching the last couple of episodes. That's about it for me, TV-wise. I started watching Grimm, but they mangle the German so badly that I just can't take it seriously. :p
