I love the look of Canto Bight, reminds me of Prequel Corucant. Also intresting we will go back to this Casino city in Star Wars: Outlaws.

I do wonder what the entire Canto story was like and why it was all cut. The whole blood diamond roof top caper. The behind the scenes photos of the streets of Dubrovnik, all lit up, look great. But in movie, it all looks so fake and artificial.

It's all so strange. I'm all for new aliens, but this doesn't quite read SW. It looks like someone did an AI image of Star Wars.

Which is too bad because this earlier concept art really nails it.

I liked Canto Bight. It’s a good visual commentary on the excesses of late-stage capitalism.

Finn getting busted for a parking ticket and getting lectured on why slavery is bad, on the other hand, was really stupid.

DJ the mercenary was good though.

I don’t know what happened either. The set photos looked amazing, and I was convinced it was shaping up to be one of my favorite Star Wars locations. Then in the movie, it was…BB8 shooting coins at Monopoly board alien and weirdly sanitized Oliver Twist servant kid nonsense combined with bland keystone cop buffoonery, and it all looked so fake. What happened to the glorious space Dubrovnik we were promised? RJ’s contempt for Star Wars world-building and bad cinematography is what happened, I guess.

Makes ya think just how bad the cut “blood diamond” scenes had to be to get removed.,

(or ya know…Crait came first theory lol)

Canto Bight was nothing more than a backdrop. There’s no significant interaction with anyone or anything there. Finn didn’t even get to interact with the Master Code Breaker that he was there for. Finn, Rose and BB-8 were just sort of…there. There were lots of interesting things to look at for about 5 mins, then Finn and Rose pretty much went straight to jail.

This hits the nail on the head, but not just for Canto Bight. The locations and cultures, people and things that fill up the world are just weak window dressing in TLJ. There’s absolutely no sense of a world that exists outside the frame. The curtain comes up, and everyone hops into action to make some limp point about something. It comes down and everyone goes on a lunch break.

Pretty sure the whole lands in jail stuff happened after the blood diamond caper thing whatever plot. So a huge chunk of something was cut between the initial 'enters casino' to 'enters Jail' scenes.

Ether it was so bad that RJ just hated it. Or something else happened.

    Well, here’s the old thing...

...While we know that at least Finn’s original, Paige Tico’s co-gunner intro made it to costuming tests, I don’t think we’ve seen either Boyega’s or Tran’s intended Canto Bight costumes beyond their concept art stage. And it’s not just how hurried and rushed the story is on Canto Bight, but even the entire character of DJ that implies almost the entire plot line even beyond Canto Bight got scrapped and replaced.

Seriously; DJ screams of giving Bencio Del Toro the freedom to choose an outfit and accent for a character Johnson couldn’t be bothered to give a name to and that Del Toro would otherwise find boring, all for a story that ends up wrapping itself in the moral of “You shouldn’t have done anything but stay on the ship.”

...Which definitely plays weirdly with that “LFL knew they needed more Poe and Finn after seeing TFA’s reception” thing we heard.

Feels like whether the original plot was more or less ambitious and respectful than the broad idea of what showed up in TLJ, some of that insecurity and contempt for Finn as Kylo’s “rival” for the male lead role probably led to the story running headlong into a “...This shouldn’t be too interesting” reaction from Johnson on an emotional level.

Maybe Dubrik just suffered some collateral damage from being too cool of a place for a story Johnson never wanted to be that interesting?

I was just reading that originally RJ had planned over 160 sets to be built for the entire movie. And his set designer or producer or someone close to him thought it was nuts, because it meant more than 2 sets filmed p day of shooting, but didn't say anything, and then soon enough RJ realized that was way too much too. And that eventually they settled on a 125 sets, and a lot got chopped, or they simply reused sets in a different way.

What were those other 40 sets to be used for? That's a whole lot of sets that just never got built or were built and never weren't used. This wasn't just all done on location. Some of it was on the back lot and soundstages.

Even conceptually though Canto seems like it should have been much longer. I kind of think there's a reason why Finn gets tased unconscious every time he needs to be at a new scene.
