The CGI was pretty noticeable but would I thought it was really well done

Would not mind seeing it again in future films

Agreed, but future CGI characters still need to serve the story. What really sold me on Tarkin and Leia in R1 was the fact that they were necessary for the film, and felt like natural inclusions.

I hope we never see CGI Luke, Han and Leia in a film set between ANH and TESB or between ROTJ and TFA unless there's a really, really good story that justifies it.

I've been amazed by my spouse, friends and colleagues who had no idea Tarkin's face was CGI'd. Most also thought Leia was composited from old footage. Goes to show that many of our perceptions have to do with what we already know.

Fab video. Just shows you there really was no Plan B if Tarkin didn't work as you couldn't have used Guy Henry's performance with all that motion capture gear on him.

I still say what makes it weird for me is Guy Henry's voice. If there was any way to manipulate voices now to get the pitch and tone of Peter Cushing it would cement it for me.

Only die hard fans knows that tbh... everyone from my friends who knows just the basics of Star Wars had NO IDEA that Tarkin was CGI. And most thought that Leia was an old footage..

It proves that ILM did an amazing job and I will defend them every single time...

I had no idea they brought in the original actor to ADR the lines! I remember being amazed at the likeness of the voice, so I thought that maybe they had spliced together old readings to get him to say the lines about the shield generator (or whatever it is he's saying). Really cool!

And he seems enthusiastic about, which makes it even more fun.

I went in to this film not knowing it would star zombie Peter Cushing or Japanese sex robot Leia and I knew I was looking at CGI.

Honestly, I think a lot of people need eye tests. I'm not even slightly joking.

It was Peter Cushing. What a trooper coming out of retirement to do the film! Kudos to our beloved Tarkin! And kudos to the team for the excellent make up job. Also, great acting for a guy 103 years old. And the make up for Carrie? Fantastic!

thought tarkin looked great only one moment that stood out as fake. leia on the other hand wasn't that good. but at the end of the day they pushed the cgi boundary further and there inclusion made the movie better

Is it just me, or does Tarkin's nose look MUCH bigger and cartoonish in Rogue One compared to ANH? The CGI was incredible but his nose kind of took me out of it.

it's completely his face. a life cast that was taken for the 80's film "top secret" was scanned and used. that's 100% what he looked like.

Might have just been the lighting or angles used that made it look bigger.

I really liked the Cgi although it wasn't perfect it was really good. We should be really happy about how the cgi improved in years:)

I watched Rogue One for the 3rd time last night and tried to study Tarkin's face even more this time. It actually gets better and better after each viewing.

I didn't have any major issues with CGI Tarkin and Leia. Though I thought Tarkin looked better than Leia did. But she was only the screen for a second or two so I won't complain.

Siphonophore I saw that weird thing at the 3:58 mark in that Gold Leader video too. [face_laugh]

Tarkin might be getting all of the press, but I think K-2SO might be ILM's best work on a CGI character to date. Granted, hard surfaces and textures are easier to replicate with digital technology than skin and flesh.

I would absolutely agree, K2S0 should be the real standout from this movie. He was flawlessly done throughout, not once did he seem off. I completely forgot he was CGI, and I usually dislike CGI.

    K2.

This is actually a very good point; we've grossly overlooked K2SO on the boards. I love the character of K2, and of all the characters in the film that met their demise, his was the one I felt the most. From a technical standpoint, I'll be honest and admit K2 isn't something I've really thought much about.

ILM really did an excellent job with K2. It's so easy for fans and audiences to critique CGI work when they "feel" something is off, but when it's done well, many don't even bother to acknowledge it or compliment it.

I think this time it was necessary for the sake of telling the story and have it makes sense. I really hope that in the future it is not used simply because it's to distracting. When Tarkin was first on screen I didn't catch what he said for the first full minute simply because I was think so much on analyzing his face over focusing on the story. I really hope they don't do this for Leia in the future.
