If you doubt Sir Ian McKellen's acting chops check out Shakespeare's Richard III (1995). He also co- wrote the screen play.

McKellen is probably the best. Lee would come in second, but Weaving is just not a good actor. Nothing he does is very convincing or interesting.

That about sums up what I think. ;)

Hugo Weaving is a bit *too* unexpresive to be a great actor. For some parts it's good, but generally speaking, not really.

Isn't Bruce Spence who is in Revenge of the Sith, also in at least one of the Matrix movies in a small role, and I think also possibly in Return of the King? That's 3 big series for him then!

Indeed you are right. Bruce Spence plays an alien in ROTS, the trainman in Matrix Revolutions, and the Mouth of Sauron in ROTK EE.

Chistopher Lee is a very hardworking actor with a lot of presence who is good at playing a narrow spectrum of roles. Now that's not a horrible thing, because he's still great at what he does.

Hugo Weaving is in a lot of different things, but from what I've seen him in (LotR, Matrix, Priscilla), he ranges from ok to pretty good.

And Ian McKellan... suggesting Ian McKellan has just been lucky with the movies he's been involved with being great is like saying Steven Speilberg has been lucky that some of the movies he's been 'involved with' have been great. Ian is brilliant in many kinds of roles.

What about John Rhys-Davies? He played 'Sallah' in two Indiana Jones films, has appeared as 'Gimli' in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Both franchises are amongst the most successfull in film history. Was he lucky, or just that good?!?

I think it's a combination of both. John Rhys-Davies will be most known for Sallah and Gimli, but he's also a very brilliant actor.

Besides, as my old theater director used to say, "While movies sometimes make the actor, a true actor makes the movie."

You can go both ways with that. ;)

JRD is one of the greatest guys ever. He was at RingCon last year and I had no idea but we were literally hanging on his lips while he was talking. every time he got asked a question he'd think about it and then start answering by going very very wide with the subject (where you actually ask yourself what it has to do with the question) but in the end all he was saying was very relevant. he's like the ultimate professor for me.....
    GREAT GUY!

Hugo Weaving's performance in "The Interview" is one of the best performances by any actor in any medium I've yet seen. I find it unfathomable that people would accuse him of only playing the one character type or being otherwise untalented.

Exactly how many of Weaving's films have you seen? Because from sheer memory, his filmography actually runs to almost a similar length as McKellen's, and has had acclaim from some of the biggest film and film critic areas around the world.
