Master would be the term of respect for one equal or above you....
Or perhaps below you, as well.

I think it's like saying Mr.

 

I always figured if you were a) employed by someone (especially royalty) or b) a Padawan you'd call them master.

Otherwise it's mister/Mr./sir.

 

In RL, "Master" is also a fancy term to address to a young boy. Whenever you go to a fancy hotel, they determine how many room occupants you have by their gender and age.
