I'm going to say all the Fast and the Furious Franchise; at least everything after the first movie. I enjoyed the first movie, but the next couple seemed somewhat redundant (albeit in different locations), and then it went straight on action hero genre and forgot about the street racing bit altogether.
The abstract notion that the the omnipresent specter of death brings meaning to life. Also, The Big Bang Theory. That show isn’t very good.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Picard are technically critically acclaimed, despite the fans (rightfully) trashing it. I hate Star Trek: Discovery and stopped watching after season 2. Nu-Trek, in general, has been a mixed bag. Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and season 3 of Picard have been good to great. Everything else, not so much.
The Godfather: soap operas about bad people being bad to each other. I just don't care. Lawrence of Arabia: slow, boring, and the story doesn't do much.
breaking bad - watched two episodes and it was obviously very well made, but i just didn't care for it. thought the whole thing would just be dark and gross and no thanks. the wire - similar to the above, watched the first four or five episodes and it didn't grab me, though it's clearly well crafted. mad max: fury road - felt like a long, expensive music video to me. the stunt work was impressive but i was bored.
And the author was inspired to write it after listening to her racist relatives whine about how the mean old North took away their “way of life.”
Tbf FromSoft games do have story and characters, it’s just that you have to dig to find some parts of them and other parts you kind of have to piece together on your own.
The best part of Gone With The Wind was hearing my high school history teacher grumble out “Bunch of Southern apologia lost cause crap!” the first and only time someone brought it up in class (in retrospect this and his dedication to assigning regular reading from Howard Zinn were cool as **** for a guy working in Arizona). Oh and I guess that one time I was walking by Margaret Mitchell’s house and they were hosting a jazz concert in the yard, that was fun. Therefore, two good things came from that book and film.
The big one for me has always been Wizard of Oz. I find it often literally unwatchable. It's so annoying that I can't stand it. I like the scene where Garland sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow. That's a great song and she gives a really beautiful and nuanced performance of it, particularly for someone as young as she was. Then they get to Oz and the movie isn't even through the Munchkins sequences before I wanted to put my foot through the TV. People like this? Why? I mean, just why? It's just awful. Unwatchable. Garbage. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Simultaneously the worst acting and the worst singing ever. It's so cringe that I can't even get through the whole song. A newer one is The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino. Got an 86 on Metacritic, got a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars that year, Criterion put out the Blu-Ray. It's also absolute trash. Got one of my rare 0 star ratings when I reviewed it. Even Wizard of Oz got like one star. Not a single redeeming thing about The Great Beauty.
Technically I have a lot to list as I've often been accused of disliking movies/shows/music just because they are popular. That's only about 1/2 right lol. So my one entry is Mass Effect games. Got all three for free with my 360. Everyone and their mother would rant at me about how awesome they are. A college friend even said it's his favorite game series of all time. Started the first and made it to like the 2nd planet and gave up. One of the worst games I've played. Sold them to a new/used store. As an aside my brain has a policy- if I hear too many people tell me to watch something in too short of a timespan guaranteed I will never watch it mostly out of spite. This happened with Stranger Things. For weeks all anyone could talk about was that show. Saw the first season and it was the most 'meh' show in a long time. My wife watched rest of series but I barely finished S2.
Some films that haven’t been brought up yet: American Beauty The Shape of Water Forrest Gump Avatar Kingsman Napoleon Dynamite Midnight Cowboy Tom Jones Alfie Persona Leon: The Professional West Side Story Scarface The Wind that Shakes the Barley The Day the Earth Stood Still Zorba the Greek Annihilation District 9 Platoon A Few Good Men Jeanne Dielman The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Hiroshima Mon Amour Bonnie and Clyde
No Country for Old Men - Hate that there's no score. Hate Tommy Lee Jones rambling dreams at the end of it. The West Wing - I tried watching the first season but I despise Aaron Sorkin's writing. Hardly anyone talks like that in real life. Quentin Tarantino films - I find all his movies boring and self-fellating but I continue to go see them so jokes on me.
