Janis Joplins rendition of Me and Bobby McGee is pretty trash, Kris sang it better.

All recordings of Ike and Tina Turner singing Proud Mary should be burned.

You're gonna have to catch that recording before you can burn it.

I think dislike is the wrong way to describe it. Just indifferent towards these apparent acclaimed pieces of media.

I watched Mary Poppins over the holidays a few years ago with some family. The entire time I found myself thinking "what even is this?". I tried looking at it from different angles to see if there was something I might be missing, to no avail. As the movie progressed my family and I became so disinterested in it we ended up just chatting with each other while the movie played in the background and agreed on what a nothing burger it was when it was over. Maybe that was the point of the movie...to bring families together?

Another so called holiday classic I don't understand the hype about is Planes Trains and Automobiles. I watched it for the first time last year. It's not a bad movie. But I don't understand how it's considered such a quintessential holiday classic. The story and events in it were pretty mundane. And there were only a few scenes with any kind of holiday decor in it. And that ending, I mean, the guy finally got home, okay cool, why so over the top melodramatic about it? Overall, I was underwhelmed, especially after hearing about it for so many years as being an all time must see holiday classic.

Mary Poppins is magic to people who saw it at a certain age in a certain window of time.

I know plenty of people who didn't see it until they were older, didn't work for them.
And most of the kids these days don't seem to have much patience for it.
It also helps to be inclined to musicals...thanks to my mother, our whole family is at least neutral on the genre.
But back in the day, the laughing on the ceiling, jumping into a cartoon, walking on smoke...that was cool to 7 year old me.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a concerted campaign by the Hughes Cult to raise a forgotten film from his catalog back into the popular consciousness.
No one talked about this film for 25 years...now, that **** is everywhere.
There was a reason it was forgotten. It will go back there soon.

I don't know about that. Planes, Trains and Automobiles gained a lot of traction on home video in the 90's as a good word of mouth comedy. You may not like it; but a lot do. My family certainly does.

I'll go with video games, since movies and shows are well-covered.

After many years, I finally gave Breath of the Wild a chance (my first Zelda anything) and I couldn't stand it. Not sure what people see in it.

But it might also be because Link's attire is wholly unsuitable. I felt the same way about Witcher 3 until I learned Gerald can visit a barber and become more presentable.

not sure some of those things qualify as media. at some point we're just doing the "unpopular but correct opinions" thread again.

BotW is my least favorite Zelda game I've played out of I think 6 or 7 games. I don't get why it is so opaque and has basically no story. I don't hate the game, but I haven't rushed to play TotK yet either.

Maybe this is a controversial opinion, and I may be missing the point you’re making, but what’s the issue with artists who may come across as pretentious, or who choose to be unconventional. Why are they a ‘problem.’

We sometimes get good stuff from people who are *******s and who risk being pretentious.

I don't really get how writing a sad ending makes the writer pretentious.

Some people (I am one of them) prefer ambiguity over cleanly resolved endings. I don't think it make sense to go out of your way to write something like that, but I certainly appreciate it in general.

I love Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I rewatched it six or seven years ago now and was kind of blown away by how good it is. Like I genuinely think it's John Candy's best performance and, while there are more quality Steve Martin performances to choose from, it's absolutely him at the height of his powers. I laughed out loud consistently through the movie and I'm on board with it being one of the best comedies of the eighties.

That bit where the car catches on fire is just comedic perfection. Every shot of that bit is exactly the shot it needs to be.
