I'd be surprised if an Heir to the Empire adaptation was part of the plan even when the first season of The Mandalorian was being written, let alone the third season of Rebels tbh.

An Heir to the Empire adaptation doesn't really require a lot of planning when your shows are already taking place in that timeline.

They probably just realized it made total sense at some point.

I wouldnt expect it to be an adaptation of heir to the empire besides the basic premise of thrawn vs new republic. In the novel Luke is thrilled to find out there's another jedi still alive, only to discover he's a mad clone. In current canon Luke already knows Ahsoka and may have heard of other ex jedi, i dont think the c'baoth stuff would work. Also Leia being pregnant and chased by the empire was a big part too, and that wont happen. Same thing for Mara Jade...so in the end how is it an adaptation of the book?

I spoke to Zahn a couple of years ago. I definitely believe this has been the plan since Filoni got involved during TROS and Mandalorian S1 - before he was official Creative Director.l

Filoni's movie is basically going to be an Avengers Endgame style team up of all the main characters to go and defeat Thrawn in a final battle.

but Heir to the Empire features Han Luke and Leia when they were young, I mean they're not gonna do that de-aging thing for a whole movie are they?

The OT3 will probably make occasional appearances throughout the film, while the main focus is on the mandoverse characters.

Adaptation is a legit word to use even when the story is loosely adapted. So that's one response I have for you.

However, the story seems to be adapting more book characters/ideas than you think.

First, it's totally possible the Han, Leia, and Luke appear in this.

If I recall correctly, the Empire wanted Force sensitive children to experiment on in the book -- that element is already in play with the Imperials being after Grogu.

Baylan, we've known for some time is a new version of C'baoth.

Ahsoka is this new version of Luke, it seems, with her directly going up against Thrawn. But that doesn't mean Luke won't be there in the end either.

Ultimately, the most unchanged, faithful aspect of Heir to the Empire will be Thrawn himself, and I think this alone justifies the talk about adaption.

My personal theory is that Mon Mothma, between the rise of the Empire and the return of Thrawn, is so sick of war that she's willfully blind to the rise of the First Order. She's so committed to peace that she unwittingly lays the foundation for the destruction of the New Republic.

I almost wouldn't be surprised if she outsources the clean up to someone like Thrawn. Lol. Like he/someone promises to make it all go away and it leads to something worse.

Sounds like it’ll be all the mandoverse characters like Din, Ahsoka, Bo-Katan, Grogu, etc.

They have the technology to de-age Luke and Han , Leia would need to be fully cgi ( Rouge one style ) , obviously the story would have to be tweaked where Luke is carrying Ben and not the twins and Ashoka , the Mandalorian would need to be added to the story - Heir to the Empire is a must to make up for the ST.

I honestly don’t think Luke is showing up for this for more than a scene/cameo at best.

    And def not Han/Harrison.

If we had Han we could have Han and Leia, if we had Leia.

If they want Luke to appear, they will likely use the same technology they used for the Book of Boba Fett. If I'm not mistaken, that was fully CGI.

Luke carried Ben? That just makes the whole story much more complicated.

When it comes to Hamill being needed to the CGI Luke. I really don't think he is needed. I think they only get him because they want an excuse to have him involved. But ultimately its not his body on screen. So if Ford didn't want to do it, they could just do it without him.

And Ford probably wouldn't want to do it.

No. They got a Luke-a-like actor to do the acting and did some AI generated magic to graphs Hamill”‘a face on to it.

Also, Alden Ehrenreich did a good job, him more older, why not be Solo again?

I think Ahsoka, The Ghost Crew, Djin, maybe Jude Law from Skeleton Crew, etc will more or less fill the roles that Luke and do had in the books.

Oh please do expand upon this!!

I'm so happy for Filoni. He deserves this. Truly. Ahsoka alone has been such a huge positive for the canon and SW community... let alone the Rebels crew and everything those characters brought to the table. We owe that man a lot of love. And the gift only keeps on giving. That Ahsoka trailer looks better than Mando IMO and I pretty much love the entirety of that series so far. I don't think s3 has fallen off the cliff in the way many right now are proclaiming. I won't be surprised if the final 2 episodes are some of the best in the history of the series thus far...

If I'm not mistaken, they need permission from the actors (or from the family in Carrie Fisher's case) to be able to use their faces.

So, Hamill or Ford aren't needed in set, but they should agree with their faces being used.

Kathleen Kennedy's feelings on recasting Solo would make this seem unlikely.

It would be much more likely LFL uses this movie as a chance to reunite the OT3. The technology is there if used wisely.

Seeing Mon pop up in the trailer made me wonder how long she is going to be the NR chancellor in Canon. In Legends I seem to recall her retiring some time around the Jedi Academy trilogy. She is not chancellor in the Bloodline novel. I wonder if she will feature in Filoni’s film, and if so, perhaps the events there will be what brings on retirement.
