Challenge ~*~ Dear Diary Challenge 2011 ~*~ Mini Challenge is up for Aug :D

This challenge was created in 2007 by the_wandering-shadow. It was/is such great fun, that it should be done again...and again and again and again. Now under a sock to ward of DRL, so if something happens to your current host (JediFalcon) the thread will go on anyway.

Teh Rulez:

1)
You have to keep the diary of a character for a whole year. It does not matter if it's canon cast or OC, AU, non-Star Wars, whatever. Write the diary of a droid, surprise us all. There was a diary of Yoda's Lightsaber once. Nothing's impossible!

2)
You have to update a least twice a month. You can update as often as you want. Just remember you need to have enough story left for the rest of the year.

3)
The length of the updates does not matter. Write a paragraph, write pages, do what you want. Just do it.

4)
I'm the keeper of the documents, meaning the Indexer. If you fail to update for a month, I'll send you a reminder and give you another week to update. This means seven days from the missed month update, not seven days from the date of the PM. For example, if your diary was last updated on March 3, and you haven't updated in 31 days - April 3 (NOTE: the number of days is subject to the number days in a given month, so if you last updated in February, it would be 28 days +7), you would have until April 10 to update, regardless if I failed to PM you until the fifth of April. If you fail to update after the extended 7 days, you're out. NO Exceptions! If you want to do NaNo, keep that in mind. Do some updates up in front, you'll be amazed how little time to write you might have.

6)
No posting (and writing) until January 1st 2011
Think and talk as much as you want though.

7)
There will be a mini-challenge each month. I will give you a theme or topic to integrate into the diary. It is NOT obligatory, just something to get your imagination running.

8)
If you failed to update for a month three times, the next time you don't update for a month, the diary will automatically drop out of the challenge. It does not matter if that three times are in a row or scattered across the year.

9)
Voting for the winner will be in the first two weeks of January. Everybody may vote, so invite your readers to do so, and everybody you know.

I think I'm gonna try my hand at the diary challenge this year. It seems like a good way to keep me writing even when I'm not working on a longfic.

I have two ideas to work from, so I'll go ahead and say-- Sign me up!

The question is which one to pursue? I'll know by January!

 

I'll be giving it another go. Hopefully real-life won't get in the way this year

 

My fingers are already itching to write. I know exactly what I want to write. Which is really a first because the last two years, I had major trouble coming with a decent idea. I think I made things too complicated but for 2011, it'll be easy and funny.

How are you getting ready for the Diary? Notes? Outlines?
Or are you just going to start writing whatever comes to mind?

 

I'm making a character list right now. I'll probably do a loose outline. But I'm using this as an exercise as making things up as I go along. That's gonna be a challenge!

 

I tend to stick with outlines. This diary should be easy, though. But I said this with the others, too. So you never know. I need a bunch of new characters for the diary so I'm starting with character profiles first.

 

I'm itching to write.

I developed my character over the past few months and I have a loose outline on what I'm going to do, with everything from her perspective.

So between this and her own story, I will have her down pat.

And i already have ideas of what she's going to be putting in her log.

 

I'm using a very long-standing character of mine. I'm on book 3 of her series out of 5 and I have this pressing need to write hers for the following reason: Book 1, she's a 22-year-old schoolteacher with powerful connections who marries Senator Palpatine on the cusp of the Naboo crisis. Book 2, we check back in with her and she's 32, 10 years into being First Lady of the Republic and a completely different tone. So where did those 10 years go? I'm writing her diary in the first year as First Lady of the Republic. Prep? I'm watching a lot of West Wing.

 

I'd like to sign up for the 2011 challenge. But, since this is my first time, I do have a couple questions. First, do we just post the diaries in their respective forums (Before the Saga, The Saga, etc.), and then let Diary_Challenge_Sock know when we update? Also, is there any specific format or necessary wording for each post? I guess I just don't know how the story should be titled and described, and what (if anything) is required per post. Thanks in advance to anyone who gives me a hand!

Yep, you post your diary in the respective forums, Before, Saga or Beyond. Or also on the Non Star Wars FanFic boards, depending on what you want to write.
When you update, just send the Diary Sock a PM so the index can be updated.

Format...well, it should be in journal format. But not necessarily in a "Dear Diary" kind of way. A first person view on whatever you want to write about is perfectly fine. There are no word limits to your updates. It can just be a few sentences but it can be several paragraphs long too. It's completely up to you.

 

I'll probably try to do this, though it's going to be up against part 2 of my Kalat Arm Desga series and other projects, which will make it more complex, especially because I'll likely do something certifiably insane like try to put out a daily diary entry (meaning 365 bits in all) as a model of a single year of a character's life.

I have a good idea, involving a low-ranking officer and a refugee camp, but I'm not going to have much preparation since I'm presently focused elsewhere, and I need to get the novel to the self-sustaining point (which as someone who's abandoned things at the 40K point takes some doing) before taking on other ideas.

 

I use an outline -- even if it's just a broad one for the main events per chapter/entry. And sometimes, a single scene would pop in my head and beg to be written and the rest of the details would spring from that.

I thought: Nah! I have one thing I'm working on and 2 fics I'm thinking seriously of starting in January or thereabouts... but still

This Han/Leia bunny won't go away!

I even have a cutesy fun title LOL!

 

How are you getting ready for the Diary? Notes? Outlines?

I use an outline but that usually to keep all of my thoughts from hyjacking my brain and running in every direction with it. Lol.

 

I think I would like to give this a try. Do I need to let you know the Character, title, era, etc. before hand?

It will be my first time, but I have a diary idea in my head anyway.
