I have been saying since announcement this is the most goddamn redundant thing ever and will basically be movie cosplay. Is the pilot episode going to be an hour of Harry and the Durseley family dodging Owls?

Very early thirties in Philosopher's Stone, but late thirties in Deathly Hallows.

 

Yeah he’s the same age as James and Lily, and they both had Harry when they were only like 20 or something.

Since it comes up often enough, and pictures stand-out and easier to remember than words, especially the actual text, it's very clear and unambiguous in the photo below.

Also, to complete the timeline:

* Harry was just a little over 1 year old at the time of his parents' death on Halloween, and he was born on July 31st. Harry would have then been born in 1980, when his parents were 20. So their whole time opposing Voldemort, and Snape's whole time being a Death Eater, they would have been 17 to 20 years old.

* Snape, Pettigrew, Sirius, and Lupin are all the same age, in the same year at Hogwarts.So they were all 31 at the start of book one.

* Lucius Malfoy was at Hogwarts the same time, but older. I'd guess 2-3 years, for enough time for Snape to be friends with Lily but then "turn" and fall in with Lucius's group.

* Petunia Evans Dursley (and presumably her husband) were also just a couple years older than Lily. So Petunia was forced to adopt Harry when she was likely around 22-23 years old, and around 32-33 at the start of the books. Around the same age as Lucius.

* Sirius's brother Regulus was younger, I think in school the same time as Sirius so not too much younger, and there had to be enough time for him to be a Death Eater so likely only 1-2 years younger.
The 3 Black Sisters (Narcissa Malfoy, Andromeda Tonks, Bellatrix Lestrange) can be presumed to be somewhat around the same age and not separated by more than a decade. None of them younger then Regulus, or at least not Bellatrix younger than Regulus, unless she was some 15 year old Death Eater torturing the Longbottoms to insanity.

* For the sake of completion: Voldemort was born in 1926 on December 31st, and therefore at Hogwarts about 1937-1944. So Tom Riddle graduated just before Grindelwald's defeat, and was 54 years old during his first defeat. So Voldemort was most active as "Dark Lord" in the 1960s and 1970s during the Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement, when he was in his 40s and 50s. So he would he been 64-65 years old in the first book (school year 1991-1992), and 71 years old when he dies in Deathly Hallows on the 1st of May in 1998 (if Dumbledore in any indication, he would have lived much longer if he never made a horcrux).

* To help remember, Voldemort is the age of a younger World War II veteran, and the Potters and their generation were among the youngest Baby Boomers (but super young when they died in 1981).

* Dumbledore was ancient. He was born in 1881, so an exact century old when we first meet him while Harry is delivered to the 22-ish-year-old Petunia. Dumbledore was born within a few years of Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Billy the Kid, etc. Dumbledore would have been with Grindelwald just a couple years before Queen Victoria's death. I think the book implies his mother, Kendra, was part Native American. But anyhow, for another reference and some perspective, Dumbledore would have been born around a decade after the well-known book Little House on the Prairie - Albus Dumbledore was 14 years younger than Laura Ingalls Wilder. Thomas Edison was beginning to get success with his experimental work with electricity; this was also the time of building the first submarines, the first automobile, the first radios, the first drinking straws, the first telephones without needing an operator, Coca Cola ( ), the opening of the Eiffel Tower, beginning to dig the Panama Canal, Jack the Ripper's serial killing, construction on the first skyscrapers, the first solar-powered cell, beginning to understand electromagnetism and the speed of light, the first (musical) record player, and the first real attempts at airplanes. The publishing of the Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Collodi's Pinocchio, Stevenson's Teeasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes's tale. Vin Gogh painting Starry Night. A lot happened in the 1880s... and Dumbledore was truly old. (Yes, this was fun to look up!)

 

In Deathly Hallows flashbacks it's shown that he was a prefect when Snape was Sorted - so a 5th year at minimum.

In an Order of the Phoenix interview with the Daily Prophet (beginning of September 1995) he's stated to be 41 - suggesting that he was born sometime between September 1953 and September 1954. Snape, Lily, and the Marauders would have been sorted 1971, Lucius was probably Sorted 1965 and a 6th year in that flashback scene.

So she would have approved of the casting of Snape, which does rather kill the argument that any of the online haters have about studio DEI hiring.

Alan Rickman was not traditionally handsome no. He fit Snape's greasy hair and beak nose from the book. My worry about this new guy is he's way too handsome.
