I don't remember that. I may have missed it, but it seems like something that would have been picked up on more. Are you thinking about Lord and Miller's cameo that didn't happen?

So... in the latest trailer (Trailer 3), an "Aqualish" is spotted just behind Jyn Erso, locked up in the Imperial prison transport cell that that the Rebels attempt to free her from (see 00:42, and turn the contrast up).

Difficult to tell if this is supposed to be Ponda Baba, as he's not wearing his trademark "Orange Jacket" here, but it could easily have been confiscated at this point by the imperials.

Logically, It does make sense for Dr Evazen and Ponda Baba to be imprisoned by the Imperials and have some quick banter back and forth in their cell, then make an escape at the same time Jyn is free'd ... but as they are also shown on a Jedha scene (or at least on set as per the sizzle reel) maybe the timing doesn't make sense chronologically.

Oh well, guess we'll see in a couple of months!

Awesome - great find! You're right that the perfect time to see them would be as Imperial prisoners being held with Jyn.

But it doesn't line up with the shot we saw in the BTS...

They could just have been hanging out, but I don't think you'd just hang out for the day in prosthetics like that.

Awesome. I hope we see more OT aliens (not characters, but species).

Yeah, that's one thing TFA was missing. Apart from the recurring characters of Chewie, Ackbar, and Nien Nunb, there were no OT or prequel aliens in TFA. They were all entirely new species.

Listening to the latest MSW podcast and they said from people they know that were there in the 20 minutes shown these 2 were causing trouble/harrasing people in a street scene which apparently played very well with the audience.

Silly cameo if you think about it. I mean their incident with Luke is about to happen in a few days at most and they are a galaxy away from Tatooine on Jedha in their cameo scene?

Weird but seems like that Aqualish was not there in turbo tank in that actual scene- or at least didn't see it. Seeing those guys there on a way to imperial working camp would have made more sense in fact. About Baba and Evazan- that cameo was odd and not needed but mainly just neutral- no reason to hate it either.

It works for me. I don't see why it shouldn't. They probably bolted as soon as the shooting began and decided to get drunk in Mos Eisley instead.
They may even have been about to leave when Jyn and Cassian ran into them.

Kind of terrible but easy to dismiss as well. Unnecessary and distracting but inoffensive in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, cameos are now officially unnecessary and a negative(the threepio one in particular seemed more about Anthony Daniel's desire to be the only person to be in every Star Wars film)

If characters work for a story, great. If not, they shrink the universe.

C3PO and R2 needed to be there though. They are on the Tantive IV at the beginning of ANH, so they would also need to be with the rebels in the battle at Scarif. Ponda Baba and Dr Evazan however was definitely fan service. It's possible that they could be there and then on Tantooine in a couple days, but I agree that it shrinks the universe.

A smoother cameo for Artoo and Threepio might've been if we'd just seen them pass by in the corridor on Tantive IV, but it's also a pretty obvious one. I like how they caught me off guard with that little Yavin IV thing!

The Rogue One Visual Guide goes into more detail on what was happening on Jedha, with a strong implication that Evazan was responsible:

    Caysin Bog
A high gravity humanoid, Caysin Bog was blown apart in an insurgency strike and pieced together again by a mysterious man named Roofoo. The surgical work matches the work done on the Decraniated.

(the picture shows a man with what looks like cyborg legs and no head, and exposed internal organs at the waist)

    The Decraniated
Ghastly medical techniques perfected by a fugitive surgeon known to inhabit the Holy City have produced an order of servants known as the Decraniated. Wounded or incapacitated victims of the ongoing insurgency are transformed with cybernetic technology to become as subservient as droids. Disturbing rumours persist that those who undergo the surgery are in fact sold into unwilling servitude and stripped of their individuality by the medical procedure. The Decraniated servants of Gesh's Tapcafe keep boisterous off-duty Imperials content with tea and other libations

(the picture shows a server with a drink jug. The upper half of their head is absent from the nose up).

    Tam Posla
An interstellar lawman representing the Milvayne Authority (as marked on his helmet), Posla has journeyed well beyond his jurisdiction and become a bounty hunter. He is investigating claims of kidnapping, forced servitude and surgical alteration of victims from the streets of Jedha. These reports resemble a rash of crimes on Milvayne, attributed to a pair of visiting spacers using the suspected aliases of Roofoo and Sawkee. Though Posla has been taken off the case by his superior officer, he is determined to bring these heinous criminals to justice.

When you take into account that Roofoo is Dr Evazan's alias while on Tatooine, in the EU (the ANH radio play called him Roofoo before the EU gave him the name Evazan in the first place), it seems like a dead giveaway.

Yeah, I don't have a major issue with it - but unless they have anything to actually do with the story, a quick glimpse and a line can be slightly jarring - it makes it Star Wars The Pop Culture Thing instead of a story you're experiencing. They'd have been better off just in the background

Now these guys can go around and brag that they were badasses on Jedha, since there are too few people to confirm it.m
Probably what they were doing on Mos Eisly.

Not my favorite cameo. At least we didn't hear Dr. Evazan say something like 'Come on Ponda, let's go to Tatooine for a drink'

I thought the cameo was harmless fun, it got a good reaction on the theater I saw it in.
