    This is the best.

Lord Vivec - you mean like how hope is like the light, if you only believe in it when you can see it..?

Not sure why Vivec insists Admiral Holdern should know the theme of the movie. That's pretty meta.

    lol

all this over saying she isn't a good leader. She simply wasn't. The entirety of feminism and social justice doesn't get undermined because one purple haired admiral lady is a bad leader, people.

So go ahead continue yelling at the stone for falling instead of focusing on the person who let it go.

I think that was sorta the point in the movie Vivec. Holdo lacked something. So did Poe.
And Leia was The Awesome One.

I criticized Poe earlier too in my explanation. But what I don't like are stupid "think pieces" by people trying to be woke defending Holdo

I think it shows that it's a pretty strong storyline after all.

I'm unsure why it's ok for Poe to disrupt the system, or why poe has to be convinced of the rightness of an idea...

You are not. Though I will post the GIF:

On top of that, because the technology is "impossible" -- and Rose and Finn tell Poe, who doesn't think to tell Holdo -- even if the technology-solution is proffered it's still just a guess since they don't know, and Occam's Razor would suggest a more rational explanation than the First Order simply got lucky and cracked an impossible technology: there's a mole or a recording device monitoring comms within the ship. So not telling anyone except like the 1-2 people you need (and absolutely trust) is 100% the correct call, even if hotshot pilots don't buy it.

Also, while this is a movie about "hope" it's also a movie whose theme is explicitly "failure is the greatest teacher, and learning from your failures is as important or moreso than your successes" -- so Poe's the failure here, not Vice-Admiral Violet Beauregard.

To be fair, I think this would have worked thematically a little better if the last movie was not literally a woman doing the same thing Poe did (Jyn Erso... gave 0 ***** about Mon Mothma and the leaders of the Rebellion and went and did her own thing and... got everyone killed, and almost the entire Rebellion killed and only survived because of a last-minute hail mary) but it was a very clear thematic choice that I liked.

In that vein, women in this movie have everything figured out. All the dudes have to be lead around, have a lesson to learn, or some failure to overcome.

Everyone needed to learn from failure, including Rey. She's not left out.

Totally explains why Rose's sister was one of the first major deaths in the film.

I actually felt that Rey was on the back foot in this film which is why I prefer her portrayal in TLJ to TFA.

Gotta agree with Coldplaynerd there. I liked Rey better in TFA, she seemed flatter here. Still cool though.

How have you agreed with me by preferring Rey in TFA?

You may owe a mawkish Englishman an apology.

It always warms my heart to see people on the JCC apologizing for agreeing with someone else. We need more posters like that.

(Not more than a few dozen, though. The server can't take it .)

I liked Holdo a lot. And I thought Poe’s character was a step down in this film from his character in TFA. Why the hell was he throwing a tantrum? That was ridiculous. One over-25 tantrum-thrower in this film was enough.

That said though, I still liked him overall, and the “Permission to get in an X-wing and blow stuff up” line was hilarious.

As far as Rey...until the very end of the movie, she was in great danger of becoming another ROTS Padme, which would have been terrible and was terrible in the process.

I started listening to more of the TLJ soundtrack and during "Old Friends" at the 03:25 mark, I heard what sounded like the Kamino theme.

In other tracks, it sounds kind of like Rose has a theme which is weird because Finn doesn't.

The Canto Bight track sounds familiar like it's almost a sped up version of the Cantina Theme with a mix of something else when it first starts. It doesn't sound like an original piece or something John Williams did.

Having obsessed over my reaction to TLJ somewhat these last few days, I think I've narrowed it down- the whole astral projection battle at the end reminded me of the ending sequence in one of the Twilight movies when it turns out the epic battle is merely a vision of the future. I think this explains my general feeling of depression when I left the cinema rather than the usual jubilation.

My last idea about switching to a cyclical ranking system made no difference at all when watching TLJ again. I had the exact same mixed reaction during my 10th screening of TLJ as I had in the 9 before. This ranking thing was a bad idea. Star Wars is far too complex for either a hierarchical or circular ranking system. It requires rankings that compare the films in at least 3 different dimensional planes, and I simply don't have the mathematical background for that.

Honestly, I just don't get why this film is so hard to like, but I know there's a good film in there somewhere, so during my 11th screening today I brought a stop watch and I wrote the beginning time points and the end points for all the scenes and parts of the film that I like. I figure that if I only watch that portion of the film and block out all the rest then what remains will be incredible. So, off to my 12th screening!

For Hux, I think they decided to intentionally make him more comical and embarrassing after young neo-nazis started to admire him after TFA.

Yeah, Leia seemed old, but that might have just been Carrie Fisher.

Chewie never actually ate a porg.

I think if we were told Rey's parents were "nobody" in TFA, everyone would be waiting for TLJ or IX to "reveal" the truth. Her parents being "nobody" is a nice twist on Luke's father being the villain. It shows the difference in their hero's journeys.
Anakin - "I'm the savior, spawn of the Force?" gets god-complex
Luke - "I'm the spawn of evil?" spends the rest of his life afraid of his own failure
Rey - "I came from nothing, a hero from my actions?" an actually balanced life perhaps?

Poe and Kylo's tantrums were supposed to make them look bad I think

Rey's first response or two to being linked to Kylo were calling him a monster

    Shirtless Kylo was stupid

    It was a rough 48 hours :p

If they changed the movie to Leia dying there, we would have lost most of Carrie's last performance... and it was pretty darn good! As well as setting up Leia to finding a successor in Poe after his own journey.

It was slow-motion, it probably took only a few seconds, we saw Leia meditating in the Force as she senses the slow-motion explosion that sucked her out. Besides, one thing astronomers have complained about before is how unrealistic instant-death in space is.

Darth Nerdling So including trailers, that's like 30+ hours you've spent watching the same movie in 5 or 6 days. Jesus Christ.
