Sinn Fein isn't a terrorist organization, it's a legitimate political party founded in 1905. It is separate from the particular incarnation of the IRA you are probably thinking about.

 

Far from inextricably, considering Sinn Fein existed both on Irish and British soil at the time, and the British branch saw considerable turmoil and split over it. The Republican Sinn Fein born out of the split in 1986 is the one with the most intricate links, and even those weren't inextricable.

I would say there are probably two broad reaction types to this piece, from the majority of readers.

One will empathise with the trials and tribulations that the author experiences.

The other will just be triggered into rage at the blindly ignorant, foot first approach that comments like this typify:

"I am continually shocked by the knowledge the Spaniards have of my country’s politicians and policies when a mere three months ago I could did not know the name of Spain’s current president."

Like, ohmygod.
