Endnotes for Star Wars: The Unknown Regions

Wizards of the Coast just released Star Wars: The Unknown Regions, an RPG sourcebook for the Star Wars roleplaying game. I helped write the book alongside Rodney Thompson and Sterling Hershey.

The book is an all-in-one guide to running adventures in the Unknown Regions -- that part of the galactic spiral lying west of Coruscant which is the most mysterious section of the galaxy far, far away. Note that there's a misprint on the cover misidentifying the writers, but the interior pages credit Rodney, Sterling and I as designers with additional design from Jonathan Stevens, Patrick Stutzman, and Robert Wieland. No less than fifteen artists worked on the book.

I wrote Chapter 5, "Threats," which profiles ten of the zone's deadliest species: the Chiss, the Ebruchi, the Killiks, the Lugubraa, Mnggal-Mnggal, the Rakata, the Sorcerers of Rhand, the Ssi-ruuk, the Tofs, and the Vagaari. Here's some of my background notes:
Chiss
The blue-skinned, red-eyed Chiss originated in the novels of Timothy Zahn and are personified in Zahn's most popular character, Grand Admiral Thrawn. They're as close as you can get to an iconic Expanded Universe species. One of them occupies the prime position onThe Unknown Regions' cover.

In some ways this was a problem. An awful lot has been written about the Chiss, starting with Zahn's books and including Star Wars Galaxy Magazine #5 and Star Wars: The Essential Atlas. When it comes down to it there's not a whole lot that's "unknown" about the Chiss given that this book is set in the Unknown Regions. And the Chiss are explicitly a law-and-order culture rather than being something unknowable and terrifying.

But all this ended up being a critical distinction. There's a great quote in Timothy Zahn'sVision of the Future which sums up the role of the Chiss in the Unknown Regions. I placed it as the pull-quote for this entry:"There are a hundred different threats out there that would freeze your blood if you knew about them. The ruling families can't stop them; neither can any other power in the region. If our people are to be protected, it's up to us."

In other words, everything else in the Unknown Regions might be unknowable and terrifying, so the Chiss have set themselves against all that. For adventurers the Chiss Ascendency is the closest thing to a safe haven during their soujurn in the Unknown Regions -- that is, if they can stand the aliens' control-freak tendencies.

That "freeze your blood" quote has since been retconned to apply to the Yuuzhan Vong, but I tried to re-retcon it here to apply it specifically to threats within the Unknown Regions to help give the zone a tinge of new menace.

Interestingly, the Chiss have been established as an offshoot of the human species (first done in the aforementioned Galaxy Magazine issue #5). True, they look like humans, but this is in fact an unusual fact to crop up in the Star Wars galaxy where everybody looks like humans. As evidence, the Twi'leks, the reptilian Falleen, and the plant-like Zelosians all look like humans but clearly don't share any human DNA.

Ebruchi
The Ebruchi originated in Timothy Zahn's short story "Command Decision" in 1996's Star Wars Adventure Journal #11. They are fat, tentacle-faced pirates, which posed a problem when I realized that 3 of my 10 threats were, in fact, pirates. (The Ebruchi, the Vagaari, and the Tofs, if you're counting). The solution was to try to separate them behaviorally, with the Ebruchi being the relatively weak common threat, the Vaagari being the badass slavers, and the Tofs being the "arrr, matey" pirate stereotype.

There's a reference in here to other Unknown Regions species that don't get direct coverage - the Eickarie, the Morseerians, and the Tarro. I'm intrigued by the Morseerians in particular. This four-armed, gas mask-wearing species is prominently featured in the A New Hopecantina scene (and has even been immortalized in plastic) but almost nothing about them has ever been revealed in spinoff material. (And now I missed my chance, dammit.)

Another reference in this entry introduces the concept of Unknown Regions trade languages, which would act as a sort of lingua franca for adventurers in lieu of Basic. These are listed here as Minnisiat, Rammocate, and Sy Bisti (Rammmocate is new, the others are from Zahn).

The pull-quote for this entry was dropped for lack of space. It was:"Villains, barbarians, and thieves! The universe will sing when the final Ebruchi exhales his last breath."

Killiks
The Killiks were first referenced in Kevin Anderson and Ralph McQuarrie's The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, but they didn't come into their own until The Swarm War, a trilogy of novels written by Troy Denning. They are a diverse colony of insects whose bodies can take on specialty roles from tanks to jumpers to swarmers to diggers.

The Killiks represent reader disgust toward bugs and other creepy-crawlies. Like the Lugubraa, the Killiks represent the fact that an invasive, fast-breeding species often simply can't be stopped no matter what steps you might take to halt their advance.The Swarm War also introduced an interesting retcon concerning the Killiks, namely that they had been used as slave labor by the immensely powerful Celestials more than 35,000 years ago to build impossible constructs like Centerpoint Station before disappearing into the Unknown Regions. This is the kind of hint that begs for follow-up and hopefully will be expanded on in the near future.

Lugubraa
The Lugubraa are lamprey-like bipedal worms inspired by the prevalence of real-worldinvasive species like the cane toad and the zebra mussel. They spring from a throwaway reference to "the Unknown Regions' Leech Legions" in The Essential Atlas, in which I mentioned that the Kaminoans had been responsible for creating more soldiers than just the Republic's clone army. But my editor on The Unknown Regions hated the name "Leech Legions," so Lugubraa became their true species name while I maintained the original concept.

These aliens draw upon much of what I find personally creepy, in this case lampreys and leeches. Gray, rubbery skin definitely included.

The pull-quote for this entry brings in the Croke, a species of shelled spiders of which Rokur Gepta is a member. The Croke also live in the Unknown Regions and I felt kind of bad about not being able to cover them in detail, so they got at least a shout-out here:"Explume is lost to the Lugubraa, six hexes be upon them. Cloak and evacuate the nestlings while I - awwwwkk!"

The Lugubraa also served a more practical function, namely as a stand-in species for instances where a GM needs thugs and leg-breakers. Normally Gamorreans would serve this function, so in the Unknown Regions the Lugubraa can work just as well.

One passage describes the evolution of the Lugubraa, pointing out that they originated in deep space in a corridor of dust and ice asteroids "that the Wharls call the Stratos Distribution." This reference to the Wharls rolls all the way back to 1996's Tales of the JediCompanion, which introduced the Wharls as the species to which Master Thon belonged. At the time I was already enamored with the idea of making Master Thon a member of the Tchuukthai species, who had been introduced in the context of a "mating poem" quoted by See-Threepio in the novel The Courtship of Princess Leia. In 1998 I retconned the Tchukkthai as the Wharl in The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons. Nothing really significant here, just wanted to put into words the odd feeling you get when you're working on something like this and have a moment when suddenly you're all, "Oh, hello 12 years ago! Ahoy!"

Mnggal-Mnggal
Here's the one entry that is entirely new, not even (as in the case of the Lugubraa) pulled from an obscure reference in another book. This entry is completely fresh and comes from the desire to have a decent amount of all-original content in this book.

Also, Mnggal-Mnggal is the creepiest thing possible in my eyes. This is what I find personally nightmarish, written up and put on paper. You might not find it similarly creepy but for me this is the result of dredging up monster-under-the-bed horrors.

Mnggal-Mnggal isn't a species but a single entity, a gray goo that is highly intelligent and able to infect victims and spread itself zombie-like (which has the benefit of increasing its likelihood to threaten the players via game mechanics). In this case it's not just a zombie, it's a puppet -- the entire interior of the body is hollowed out and replaced by Mnggal-Mnggal ooze which animates the arms and legs in an awful, profane fashion. On its home planet Mnggal-Mnggal is a world-ocean that shares with visitors the whispered secrets of the galaxy's creation. In fact it's even hinted that the Celestials created the galactic barrier so they could isolate themselves from Mnggal-Mnggal.

There's quite a bit of H. P. Lovecraft behind Mnggal-Mnggal. Quite unintentional is the fact that there's also bit of Joe Schreiber's Death Troopers in here, namely the fact that a deadly infection can turn people into zombies. I didn't read Death Troopers until after I had already finished the manuscript for The Unknown Regions, but at the last minute I was able to include a line which speculatively tied Mnggal-Mnggal to developments under "Imperial Project Blackwing" (e.g. Death Troopers).

Alert fans will note a passage which reads, "Mnggal-Mnggal might even be extradimensional in origin. Its appearance is so alien that some have tied it to reports of shapeless beings from beyond known space with magical telepathic and healing abilities." Yes, that's a Warureference!

There's also a line reading, "Extended outbreaks are responsible for the decimation of the Viis Empire and other game-changing political shifts in the Unknown Regions." The Viis Empire originally appeared in the book series Lucasfilm's Alien Chronicles, which was never meant to take place within the Star Wars galaxy. Since then a number of references have referred to the events of Alien Chronicles in a wink-and-nod fashion, and this book is the latest in that tradition.

Finally, the pull-quote got dropped for lack of space. It was:"Covan was the first to go, then Eelia. It's not taking me too. When I pull this trigger, that'll be the end of the Deep Charting Expedition."

Rakata
The Rakata first popped up in the Lucasarts/Bioware computer game Knights of the Old Republic and prompted a lot of fans to say, WTF?

The introduction of an alien species that had once ruled the galaxy and were responsible for creating such iconic elements as the giant trees of Kashyyyk caught a lot of people by surprise. It's not that there was anything wrong with the concept of the Rakata, but the idea that Lucasfilm would OK the idea of a progenitor species seemed like an unusual move in light of the barest hints about the pre-Republic era we had received to date.

But once introduced, it all became fair game. I had fun working with the Rakata in The New Essential Chronology and The Essential Atlas. They were a species of creators and conquerors who had since fallen on hard times. And with The Unknown Regions I was able to introduce the idea that the Rakata aren't extinct, they just moved to a section of space where no one was ever likely to find them.

The Rakatan Archipelago is an area within the Unknown Regions where tribes of Rakata still thrive. They span the technological range from spear-wielding primitives to insane mad scientists. The Rakata can be as dangerous as the GM wants them to be.

There are some details on genetic inbreeding here, such as the fact that the Rakata keep Wookiee slaves who are stoop-shouldered, hairless, and have long front incisors, and enjoy pets including amphibious rancors and scurrier-sized offshoots of the Corellian sand-panther. Hey, if a wolf can eventually give rise to a Chihuahua all of this made sense to me.

A few Rakata tribes are said to possess access to Mind Trap prisons. These devices originated in the Knights of the Old Republic game and they allowed the player to enter an expanse of blank nothingness containing a Raktatan prisoner (still alive after more than 25,000 years). The use of Mind Traps here allows the player to release all sort of ancient horrors into the modern world such as Sharu criminals, Kwa super-soldiers, and other insane killers. A very literal Pandora's box.

Later we meet Elder Ruthic, a Rakatan leader who is protected by two Gengh-Noghri bodyguards. These Noghri offshoots are described as "over two meters in height [with] massive crocodilian heads filled with flesh-tearing teeth." This description is a tip of the hat (not an in-universe retcon) to the Heir to the Empire comics adaptation by Oliver Vatine, in which the Noghri were illustrated as giants who could tear out the throat of a Wookiee (rather than the compact killers described in the novel).

Also employed by Elder Ruthic is Raspir, a pure-blooded Sith recently released from a Mind Trap who served Sith King Adas more than 28,000 years ago. This makes him arguably the oldest Star Wars character in existence, outlasting even Arden Lyn.

Sorcerers of Rhand
These guys originated in Matthew Woodring Stover's novel Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, but only in the most marginal sense. They never actually appeared in the book and their philosophy and technology were only discussed in an abstract fashion. This meant that the opportunity to explore them was essentially a blank slate, making this one of three entries (along with the Lugubraa and Mnggal-Mnggal) that are mostly original to this volume.

The Sorcerers are meant to be strange and incomprehensible. Their appearances are intentionally not nailed down. The descriptions from the chronicler Succate give a good overview -- one Sorcerer lacked skin and oozed bodily fluids with every step, one was merely a blackened skeleton, one appeared to have been turned inside out with clean white teeth poking jaggedly from a raw mass of a head, and one existed as a long ribbon of flesh that swirled and coiled throughout the receiving chamber. I don't know about you but these were all written as things that scared the crap out of me. I wanted to write about the Sorcerers as if they were the last beings I would ever want to encounter in real life.

The Sorcerers are nihilists who believe in the power of entropy above all else. This is an interesting philosophy. If you use the power of entropy to improve your own personal station - as the Sorcerers do - then you're not really embracing entropy. Of course the Sorcerers could be hypocrites who want everybody else ground into dust while they do the grinding. They wouldn't be the first.

The Sorcerers are said to be the result of three ancient philosophical schools, including theTaung priestly sisterhood of the Warriors of the Shadow who fled to the Unknown Regions after being defeated by the Battalions of Zhell during the pre-Republic era.

Ssi-ruuk
The Ssi-ruuk debuted in the novel The Truce at Bakura by Kathy Tyers first published back in 1993. This makes the Ssi-ruuk the oldest threats in this book (with the exception of the Tofs).

Here's the fun thing about the Ssi-ruuk: they're velociraptors. Not actual velociraptors, which were approximately the size of turkeys. I'm talking Jurassic Park-style velociraptors (or Utahraptors, you paleo-nerd) which can hold weapons in their talons and invade entire planets.

Like the Chiss, a great deal of Ssi-ruuk culture had already been covered by the time I started with outlets like The Truce at Bakura Sourcebook and the Force Heretic novels by Sean Williams and Shane Dix.

Way back in 2000's Star Wars: The Essential Chronology I created a bit of continuity in which I revealed that in the aftermath of the Truce at Bakura incident, the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium was largely defeated by the Chiss Ascendency. This was an interesting factoid but kind of vague on the specifics. The Unknown Regions helps clean this up, explaining that Grand Admiral Thrawn's Household Phalanx first attacked the Ssi-ruuk with a subsequent follow-up from the mainline forces of the Chiss Expeditionary Defensive Force.

Tofs
The Tofs are the oldest enemies in this section, having first appeared in issue #103 of Marvel Comics' Star Wars series back in 1986. There, they were introduced as the natural enemies of the Nagai, with both species originating in another galaxy (later retconned as a Companion Besh, a companion galaxy to the galaxy far, far away).

Why cover the Tofs and not the Nagai? The simple reason is that the Nagai have been done to death. The Tofs have barely been covered at all, and part of that might be the fact that fans are slightly embarrassed by the Tofs.

Think about it. The Tofs are plump, ruddy pirates with flintlock pistols tucked into their waistbands who cruise around on spacegoing sailing ships with names like theMerryweather. They're odd. They don't easily fit into the science fiction aspect of Star Wars.

That's why I love them! I was glad to be able to delve into the Tofs and their glorious anachronisms. From the bows they put in their beards to the Cupid fountains they erect on conquered planets, I enjoyed the opportunity to get into their weird heads.

The name of the Tofs' home galaxy, Companion Besh, originated with The Essential Atlasand is obviously a Republic convention. Revealed here for the first time is the Tof/Nagai/Maccabree name for their galaxy: Firefist.

In addition, this entry provides stats for a Royal Fortune light clipper. This was based on armaments and crew complements for comparable real-world sailing ships, which seemed fitting. The Royal Fortune light clipper also carries a secret weapon, one "Fotia's Fire launcher." This is based on Greek Fire, used in ship-to-ship battles many centuries ago and believed to have been similar in composition to napalm.
Vagaari
The Vaagari first appeared in Timothy Zahn's novel Outbound Flight. They are slavers who possess no moral conscience and excel at tricking others into believing that they pose no threat. In writing this entry, I tried to set them up as the villains with extremely dangerous, calculating minds, to such a degree that they would be avoided by other threats including the Ebruchi and the Rakata.

One piece I enjoyed was the notion that the Vagaari have gods, but that their gods are inferior beings who created the Vagaari so that they would in turn have deities to worship.

Also, the inability of the Vagaari to understand why other beings would have feelings for vulnerable or wounded members is a an example of their species-wide sociopathy. Beings with no empathy would naturally put prisoners in bubbles on a ship's hull to create a "living shield." If it causes the enemy to flinch, why not? It's a great tactical advantage, is it not?

Yeah, beyond the name alien characters there was little showing of those that had come before. But the galaxy is a big place. It is possible that due to the area of the galaxy those species that would support the resistance would be a different variety than those that were so prominent in supporting the Rebellion. As most of those might now be stuck in putting their focus in running the Galaxy instead of ridding it of the last vestiges of the 'defeated' Empire.

Compared to the other films, the new aliens don't really look that interesting IMO, except maybe Maz. Most of them look too similar to each other instead of being at least a little unique, even if it's just changing a color scheme.

i found out the age old question to where humans came for in the star wars galaxy.....................................................BRACE FOR IT.......................................................................CORElLIA based on star and human history on earth - how i did it i separated the hyperspace barrier between the Unknown regions and known space and the top of the world with the top of the galaxy and the bottom of the world and the galaxy and the results are a not tat surprising CORELLIA see ( image a little off (by millimeters) the red should be around corellia for your self below

That's normal for J.J. as like tfa his star trek films had a few classic alien species, Vulcans, romulans(depicted similar to TOS romulans, without the brow rodge seen in TNG and later series), redesigned Klingons, and we got one Orion with Galia in the first movie. No Andorrians or tellerites, who where among the other founding races of the federation.

I am not bashing Abrams Some of those designs are great but it would have been cool to see more classic species than just Mon Cals, Sullustans and a single wookie, it would have been even better to see them throw in some clone wars era species especially the ones that were achieved practically in the prequels Like Kel-dor(Plo Koons species), Neimodians, Chagarians, heck I'd have even settled for a Rodian in maz's castle. Just some more aliens introduced in other eras to tie tfa closer to both previous eras. Hopefull we see some in episode 8 and in Rogue One.

I'd love to see the Kel Dor again too. It makes in-universe sense that maybe there weren't so many off Dorin during the time of the Empire, since their masks make them vulnerable and the racist Empire probably wouldn't have been a great time for a species with a major weakness and a gimmick that's basically "even other people in the Star Wars universe think these guys are weird and ugly." People who like Kel Dor should check out Fate of the Jedi: Outcast. Large sections of it take place on Dorin and I really like the worldbuilding in it, even if the rest of the book was kinda forgettable IMO.

I also recommend The Old Republic: Annihilation. It features a Kel Dor Jedi Master against a Falleen Sith.
