But I'm only comparing shiny/silvery entities. Galactus is too blue & purple to qualify.

They should make him less shiny like this pic or else people will think Arnold's gonna come out and try to pump him up. :p

Also I was just thinking how by itself a Fantastic Four movie doesn't interest me and it takes something like the inclusion of SS to get me even mildly interested.

Yes who is this mysterious and unknown assailant dating back to the sixties who besmirches the shtick of a short lived villain from an over-the-top 90s Action Flick staring the Governator?

The T-1000 and the whole Terminator series rank higher in the annals (lol) of pop culture and science fiction in general.

Okay, just checking. Everyonehere does know that the Silver Surfer was around long before T2, right? But still, Siderfan, you must stopcriticizing T2. I fear for your safety.

I just had a googlefight between Terminator 2 and Silver Surfer, and T2 blew that punk out of outer space. The fight between Terminator & Fantastic Four was a lot closer though (but terminator still won). I have a very good feeling the lay person aged 15-35 is far more aware of the T-1000 than the Silver Surfer, and that basically tells you about the influence of comics today.

Ok, you do realize that a majority of the people in the world have never so much as picked up a comic book, let alone have a clue as to wt* a Silver Surfer is, right?

They should like totally make him gold instead of silver so he'd be like the Gold Surfer Dude.

Sadly this film won't help. However I find the comparison between the Silver Surfer and T1000 to be a moot point based simply on similar looks. One is a cosmic entity who heralds the coming of a devastating force, a harbinger of apocalyptic proportions. The other is a designed killing machine that was destroyed by an inferior model, one that was breaking down mind you. Its single minded purpose makes it interesting but beyond the context of the one story he loses appeal (much like Darth Maul...never the same after PM). Surfer, though single minded at first, because a far more interesting character due to the fact he rebels against his master (an unheard of feat) and chooses a better life of individuality and using his cosmic abilities to help others. Were the two to meet (a single minded killing machine designed to deal with mortals vs a cosmic entity whose full potential is not fully realized and is very likely immortal if not an entity of a long enduring lifespan) I hardly think the outcome is what you would expect.

And simply because something is more popular and known better throughout popular culture does not make it better or more significant.

And for the record I quite enjoyed T2...when I was 12. For me it remains a staple of my child hood...one that I adore. But Speaking as an objective adult, its certainly not a flawless film and I am beginning to see that its flaws IMO outweigh its merits. The best it has going for it were state of the art visuals that have since become outdated as most SciFi does. IMO the only candle it holds anymore is a compelling plot that is over wrought with unnecessary action.

It doesn't matter which character is deeper or more powerful. The bottom line is that the more average people will associate a shiny silvery guy with the T-1000 than the Silver Surfer. It's an issue of medium, not character depth. That was pretty much Juli's point.

As the great Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan said, "the medium is the message."

Well according to Mr. McLuhan messages are the effect of the medium. Its not a balanced argument to state that one character is more effective when they come from completely separate media.

The effectiveness of the characters should be based on their merits not who has more exposure. If you want to compare who is better known then yes T1000 is the greater character due to his role in one of the highest grossing films of all time amid one of the most well known franchises of all times, where as Surfer is a secondary character in a subculture that has only recently began to achieve mass appeal. Again comparing the massively widereaching medium of film, to the relatively unpopular medium of Comics is unfair to either character and fails to illustrate an appropriate disection of each.

Simply stating that T1000 is a better character based on this diminishes the role of either character. Pardon me for thinking characters should be measured by their qualities and attributes rather then through a popularity contest.

I'm merely talking about association of these characters, which is affected by the mediums which these characters were originally portrayed. I think you're missing my point entirely and are veering off on complicated tangents when this is a simple issue.

I never originally said T-1000 was a better character. I was just pointing out he predates this shiny, silver colored character and that some people will even go as far to assume this guy is a ripoff of the T-1000 thanks to the exposures of the two franchises.

Silver Surfer's first appearance: Fantastic Four #48 (1966). If I am not mistaken T2: Judgement Day was released in 1991, 25 years later. Yeah T1000 appeared first alright. [face_plain] Anyone who assumes Surfer is a ripoff, is making an uninformed claim.

I was only basing it on which shiny character hit the big screen first, but the fact you seem to take things so seriously implies you need to get a grip on defending comics on an online message board.

IIRC, you seemed to take the lighthearted jokes LMM and myself made pretty seriously. So I had to respond in kind.

When I said 'too blue & purple to qualify' earlier, I think that should have been a signal about my intent for you. But I assumed too much about your comprehension.

Is the T1000 a type of Pontiac?
