PT Favorite Shots From The Prequels

Not sure if you're a gamer or not, but there are some stunning prequel-era Kashyyyk maps in Star Wars: Battlefront II on PS4. The biggest goes all the way up from the beach to a Venator which has landed in a clearing. There's also a smaller treetop map in other gameplay modes.

 

Nothing too significant about this one - it's just cool! Anyone else able to hear the war drums just by looking

Interestingly I see no chromatic aberration or so much distortion in the same frame in the AOTC 35mm trailer (wildly more saturated in color) or AOTC 35mm feature or AOTC UK HDTV capture. I didn't compare to blu-rays or the UHD yet. I wonder where the above image comes from? One of the discs or something else?

So many terrific shots. Basically everything on Geonosis looks especially good to me. There is a great juxtaposition in scale throughout between the figures, the buildings, and the war machines.

 

I've always been drawn to this moment. As a student of history, I can appreciate how easily epochal events can swing one way or the other; in Lucas's mythos, Palpatine's survival hinged on precious seconds and the force of gravity itself. (And then there's the conceit of how even the most desperate, well-intended, even noble aims can fail. From that point on, Yoda had to surrender to the course of events and adapt.)

 

Some ROTS offerings:

Not so much an aesthetic triumph, but worth mentioning for the delirious joy that emerges from seeing the Emperor, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi and R2-D2 in the same frame. My 10-year old self would have run across the walls and ceiling!





Lucas's talent as a visual storyteller is grossly underestimated: this sole image is sufficient to understand the psyche of Anakin and his twin motivations (i.e., the feminine tether; the will to power).

Anything of intro shots at Naboo or Mustafar is definitely up there

 

that’s actually a funny thing I never thought about. Imagine telling people in 1998 that the prequels will have a scene where Old Ben, Vader, the Emperor and R2 are all in a swashbuckling, bantery, and cordial scene with all each other kinda mind-blowing when ya think about it lol

 

I can't find the exact frame, but that one shot where Anakin turns to leave, the Force Theme kicks in, and Shmi shrinks into herself and looks on, is a Top 10 Saga moment.

Agreed. So much works to sell that scene, but her contribution is flawless.

 

Don't you just love the recurring motif of the demonic light in the background, transfixing and dictating the destinies of the doomed ROTS characters?

 

I always admire the shot of Darth Maul watching the Naboo cruiser disappear into the sky. It's got beautiful composition.

 

Looking at this image I'm struck by another thought. It looks like a bath plug being pulled. As the pod that Yoda and Sidious are battling on rises the Senate pods look like a whirlpool as the Republic goes literally down the drain. Stunning.
