Can't answer that without knowing how it was built. Which, apparently, nobody seems to really know at this point, from what information has filtered in the press I could read...

Most Florida home construction is just concrete and block because hurricanes. And the hurricanes will shoot super heavy cinder blocks like a cannon all over the place here if they are like in the middle of a build.

Usually the roof has wood frame and thats about it.

This building was built at the height of the cocaine era in Miami (which I grew up in and during). Miami Beach has long been a hub of money laundering, etc. and I’m wondering if serious skimping happened on proper construction of this thing. It’s like something out of The Sopranos... sell some of the stuff that was supposed to be used in the construction and pocket the difference. And (just about) everyone was on the take back then so it’s not like I’d expect the original inspection/approval to have noted deficiencies. I don’t know, just guessing.

    Bu
... and yet, 75% of the residents are staying, saying that they think the maintenance for their building was top notch.

Guys, it likely was the way it was constructed, not a lack of maintenance.

Heard a heart breaking interview with the adult son of a woman thought to have died in the collapse. Both his mom and grand mother lived there and are missing. He spoke to his mom the day before the accident. The previous night she was awoken by a loud creaking sound after which she couldn’t fall back asleep.

    Here’s the interview.

UGH, I mean, yeah, it probably seems crass and insensitive from the outside looking in, but yeah, if I was living in a building identical to one that just frelling collapsed, I'd be probably putting my condo up for sail and getting the heck out too.

Death toll's just inched up to twelve.

The building that collapsed is Champlain Towers South. It’s part of the three building Champlain Towers Complex. Three building all on the same beach, yards apart, made by the same developer.

Champlain Towers East was built later in 1994 and is architecturally different.

Champlain Towers South and Champlain Towers North were built at the same time in 1981 with the same materials. Architecturally they are same but mirror images of each other. How could you stay in the sister building of the one that collapsed?

Bonus fact: Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s Miami Penthouse is on the same beach front located one block north from Champlain Tower North.

Apparently the Towers North building was inspected after the South's collapse and has seemingly been found to be in much better shape than the South was.

    Structurally desolidarized volume?

Can we use the Marvel Soul Stone principle and trade Bill Cosby's soul for one of the souls still in the rubble?

What a nightmare. The pool understructure looks like it was ready to break a part at any moment. Another report said that a resident had complained the night before the collapse to her family that she couldn't sleep and was up all night because the building was creaking and crackling.

The pool contractor also noted where the deepest water was seen. That spot is like ... center of the building and that's exactly where it looks like it all started to collapse on that security footage.

Apparently President and Dr. Biden are in Surfside to support first responders.

    Has DeSantis been there yet?

Yeah, he's been seen (but rarely heard except maybe in the beginning of the week (Monday) at the press conferences.

Edit: Search and rescue efforts have been halted due to fears of the remaining building collapsing.

Saw on the news here that they've had to temporarily stop the search due to safety fears.

Come on. DeSantis has been plenty busy. He’s been on the phone all week trying to stop Trump from throwing a MAGA-party in nearby Sarasota.

COVID decided it didn't want to be forgotten in this mess to, as some of the first responders have tested positive for COVID.

DeSantis left the site at one point for his stupid propaganda exercise about sending state police to 'help' Governor Abbott in Texas with the non-existent border crisis.

Read a bit about the exchanges that followed the 2018 Morabito report regarding the work that was necessary and its evaluation (these exchanges were still ongoing as late as May 2021). They are, unfortunately, of a very familiar nature when stakes are high - it was going to be a ~$15 million bill, and as is usual in such situations, years were wasted over debating who would pay and whether the bill could be lowered - only in this case, time ran out...

So, who is in charge of building inspections like this when these things get erected? Is it a little too easy to bypass requirements? Seems like this structure was destined to not last very long. Someone has to be held responsible. This was totally avoidable.

Well, according to several experts that have been interviewed, the state of Florida's lag in updating how building inspections are conducted:
    https://www.tampabay.com/news/flori...-and-county-building-inspections-experts-say/

So from them, it sounds likely that the state of Florida's lax approach to building safety may well have been a factor. Of course, I suspect "the state of Florida" isn't one of the acceptable answers to that question.
