What a handy topic...I am currently trying to decide whether or not to ask for GBA or GBA SP for my birthday next month (it's after the 23rd so it'll be out by then). I have no experience with GBA, so I'm not really sure what the pros and cons of each will be. The only things I can think of so far is that the GBA obviously has some inconvenient lighting. The thing that concerns me about the GBA SP is that it's obviously smaller so it'll have a smaller screen, which doesn't sound too cool. I guess I basically want to know if GBA SP would be worth the $30 more. Input anyone?

The GBA's main problems were the lack of a backlight (meaning that you couldn't play it in especially dark conditions), and the fact that its games have to up the space about equal to what a PS2 game would use for it's opening titles. This meanssome pretty small games, like NDA, which was very good, but too short, because of the space issue. The battery life, however, of the GBA was very good, and it is a very powerful mini gaming console.

I already have the GBA and am going to get the SP. Though Ill sell my GBA to my sister (and im a nintendo junkie).

I suggest getting the SP for $30 more, that price will dimish away because you dont have to use batteries. It uses a charger instead of batteries. The SP is also more compact and be more portable due to the small size and lighting.

    38 days and 2hrs and 42 min. until release (i think :p)

It makes no sense that there aren't headphone jacks. Why remove functionality with sound and add so much for the visuals?

    Looks very cool.

But for those worried, IGN did a hands on coverage. The screen size, believe it or not, is the same size. So no worries about smaller graphics.

But what I really want, which comes out soon, is the GBA Player, which hooks up under the GC and lets you play GBA games on your TV.

It'll be SNES all over again.

    Werd.

I'm going to be getting the Gameboy Player. I'm a proud owner of the Super Gameboy, and I love it. I never take my GBA anywhere, because of course it's hard to find good lighting. So I just treat it as any other console, expect it's small. So, when the GBP comes out, I'll get it in order to play my games on the nice, big, clear screen of my TV.

I like this thread, it was my first post with the name Dr_Nick. :)

Anyways, I was so close of getting an SP. I went to my local Wall-Mart and to my surprise I found they had a couple SPs in stock. Right before purchasing it the manager stopped me and said that they couldn't sell it and said the data for the SP was locked or something like that. Oh well not in a rush to get one but it would help to light my game of Pokemon.

Hmm. That's too bad. I got mine last night at a K-Mart. The only problem I had was finding a clerk who actually had a key to the big case they keep all the video games and consoles in. They had like 6 or 8 SPs.

It was kind of funny because I had first gone to the video game store next to the K-Mart. They didn't have one for me since I didn't reserve one. The clerk told me I should reserve one for the next shipment because I'd never find one on the shelves for like 6 months. He was very insistent. Dork. Oh well. :)

Is the SP really worth $99?? Seems like a lot of dough for a game boy. I think I'll be waiting for the price to drop.

I think I'm going to get the GC GameBoy Advance Player rather than this. I'm still POed about the head phones. They came so close to a perfect successor.

Wow. I bought a GBA SP a couple of days ago, and I have to admit, the little sucker is amazing. The backlit screen looks great, and it's even smaller than the GBA. I had a Afterburner modded GBA, and sold it once I started playing the SP. Fantastic little console.

I love it too with the lighting (not a backlight B'omarr :) ) and its small enough to slip into my pocket at school. :D

The light makes this system ten times better than the original.

Man, alot of you guys have your facts all really wront.

The SP has a frontlight, not a backlight. The screen is reflective, that's why without much light its crappy, but with alot it looks awesome.

Earlier somebody commented about Nintendo's stupid wormlight crap? Nintendo had nothing to do with any of that. All third party peripherals.

You should have researched some of you people? eh?

Anyway, I have a platinum, and the 30 bucks is more than worth it for the extra. Never worrry about the lighting. Ten hours is quite a bit by the way with the light.

I never had a normal GBA, but I couldn't resist the GBA SP. I found the GBA screen very poor, and it was the only reason I didn't get one, but the GBA SP is frickin awesome. I had no idea a light would make so much difference. I bought quite a few games with it:

    Mario Kart
    Super Mario World
    Doom
    Duke Nukem Advance
    Street Fighter 3 Alpha
    Colin Mcrae Rally 2.0

    They are all ace.

As for the headphones issue, there is an adaptor which plugs into the back. This solves that problem :D

Is Duke Nukem Advance fun? I want a new game and a FPS and have been keeping my eye on that one.

    "Is Duke Nukem Advance fun?"

Yes, much better than Doom. Its great because it looks and plays good, and is very smooth 90% of the time.

But I think Street Fighter and Colin McRae are me favourites :)

While on my trip during Spring Break I finally felt that the SP was a worthwhile purchase.

While playing it in a restaurant some people were eyeing my GBA, one person even went up to ask me what it was thinking it was a DVD player. It was wise for me to pick up silver as more peolpe thoght it was some funky gizmo due to the shiny coloer. Better yet it was a total chick magnet
