I liked your post save for the bolded line. IF I write the ST I would do the same thing -- horrific love story that ends badly for all involved. in other words, I'd make it realistic to today's standards. LOL

Totally man. Lets Game of Thrones it all. That show actually ruined romance for me because now my mind keeps thinking up scenarios for "Red Wedding" type events for everything and it hurts me. Heck some evil writer made a Star Trek version of Red Wedding and my mind still hasn't healed. I'd be horrified *and impressed* if Lucasfilm made a wonderful romance with characters we cared about....and then brutally ended it before our horrified eyes right when we think everything is going soo well.

Something fun and flirty that feels natural rather the weird unnaturalness of the PT.

If the main character turns out to be female like there have been hints about, then I'd prefer the romance-- there is any at all-- to be on the side and not central to the character because I find when romance is introduced, it tends to sideline the female character until that's all that defines them such as what happened with Princess Leia (I found Leia was best defined as a character in ANH and basically coasted off the character establishment done in that movie in the subsequent two movies) and Padme (it can be argued that the romance sidelining Padme was what was supposed to happen in AotC though I wish the deleted establishment of the Rebellion scenes in RotS could have remained in to prevent that singular focus on her identity as Anakin's wife and mother of his children). Based on Hollywood and J.J. Abrams' track record, I don't know if I can trust for a female character to be handled in a well rounded way if a sizable amount of romance were to be added onscreen-- I'd prefer it be left open to interpretation or mostly offscreen for Star Wars. I think that works best.

There needs to be some romance, like in the OT. Something to give certain characters extra depth and motivates some of the action.

The PT and the OT was all about the birth and blossoming of relationships. How about starting the ST with a strong, established relationship and then see how the events of the ST wear on it? They could be stronger for their trials, the relationship could end in tragedy, or be destroyed by betrayal. To me that would be far more interesting than watching a new relationship begin.

Han, Leia, as an "old married couple" bickering affectionately, but clearly still in love decades on from the events of the movie- would make a lot of sense to me.

Nothing against love stories in general, there are movies where they fit and some where they don't, but I always prefer it when they make a good character with a motivation that's somewhat more complex "He/she loves him/her, now he/she must do this/that to save him/her. Action. Go."
A movie can work just fine without it, just takes a bit more effort to make characters with depth without just throwing in a love interest and let it sort itself out :p

If not romance and bromance :p, I'd love to see the characters bonding by true friendship.

A little romance is ok. As long as its not like the Anakin and Padme love scene in AOTC. Those scenes were pure torture.

Only important if Disney wants to market the movie broadly and plans on future trilogies 20 years from now too... so likely very important for at least some of the cast :p

To PT defend, there had to be romance because Luke and Leia needed a mom. People can argue how it was done, but there had to ne romance.

I agree, we most likely will have Han and Leia having a form of romance going. I also agree that romance shouldn't be the plot. The new characters can have some romance, but it should be light, fun and flirty. Nothing serious.

Forget Romance!!! Why can't we just see some "Animal Magnetism" or some "Carnal Knowledge?" And Just to keep it interesting, have it happen during an epic combat scene where lasers are firing and people are floating in microgravity.

No, romance isn't necessarily important in contracting STDs. What an odd topic...

It was a bit heavy in the PT even though it was essential, so I'd prefer that whatever romance that exists in the ST be kept to OT levels, i.e. secondary.

I'm okay with it as long as the films pass the Bechdel test. If they can't, then it's a complete waste of time aloted to the film.

They will meet in Episode 7 but not show more interest for each other than mild curiosity.
They will profess their love for each other in an intense scene at the end of Episode 8.
The relationship will be mature at the beginning of Episode 9.

    ...
