Ainu Woman with Wagtails by Yseulta

"Oops I was going to submit something else, and then I remembered that I hated it and needed to fix a character's entire head, so here we are with this different painting instead!

And it's not Lamia art? Or fan-art? What is it?? D:

The Ainu are an indigenous people of Japan (northern Honshu and Hokkaido) and whatever parts of Russia are nearby. The women begin to get tattoos at the onset of puberty, the most noticeable one being around the mouth area. I guess people don't know precisely why they tattooed around the mouth, but some think it was to resemble the beards that the men grew. I don't know, I just know that they played with bears.

The instrument is a tonkori, and until last night I had forgotten to draw strings on it And the birds are yellow wagtails, which are one of my favourites! The inspiration behind this picture was a story I read about how the Ainu believed that wagtails flew over the earth, which used to just be water - and wherever the wagtail dipped into the water, land came up, which is how the earth happened.

I did take some liberties with this painting - for example, her hair is too long (the Ainu cut both men's and women's hair at shoulder length), and while I think that yellow wagtails can be found in Japan, the black-and-white Japanese wagtail might be more prolific, buuut the yellow wagtail matched my colour scheme better"

Bear Versus Reindeer? No Contest by Jaqhnun

a submission for this fantastic tumblr, which is a collection of ‘concept art’ exploring what the upcoming Disney film “Frozen”, based off of the fable “The Snow Queen”, could have looked like had it been set in a PoC culture and starred PoC characters, instead of being set in some weird fantasy Scandinavialand and starring white people. Seriously, I’m super unimpressed by the official concept art so far; it looks like Rapunzel on Ice.

I originally wanted to draw my protagonist as a Saami girl, since part of the original fable is set in Saamiland (or Lappland), but part of me wanted to go for a snowy culture that hadn’t been represented on the tumblr yet, so she’s Ainu (aboriginal people of Hokkaido and Sakhalin)! I didn’t have an exact time period in mind, but 1700’s-ish or before would probs be appropriate for how she’s dressed. She’s carrying a small sheathed knife in her left hand, and while the tattoos on her arms are extensive due to her high social status, the tattoo on her upper lip is subtle because she’s still a young girl.

The Animal Companion in both the fable and the film is a reindeer, but I’ve replaced it with a black bear both for cultural significance and because, if you want an Animal Companion for your protagonist, you can’t get more ****ing hardcore than a bear.
