Okay, so it's another extra this time! This extra is something of an anomaly--it's kinda sorta a "for fun" extra like my #100 and my Amazing Friends and Allies extras, but this one is also an important story turning point. So not much plot here, but it's formative of the rest of the series.

Following the fallout of the Gathering of Five and the funeral for Ben Reilly, Peter Parker had two exciting revelations. One, he was offered a teaching position at Midtown High, teaching physics. The other? Well, after the fall of the Scriers and Morlun's death, much of the secrets of the Inheritors and the conspiracies surrounding Peter Parker's life had been hidden from the government's view by Puma--as the arbiter of the Inheritors he was also somewhat of a cleanup crew. With Puma and the Gathering of Five gone, all of the information around this was revealed in full to the government for the first time. All of this secrecy and odd circumstances had led them to mistrust the webhead for years, but with everything laid bare and seeing that Parker had remained true to himself the whole time, they realized he was the kind of person they could use.

So they offered Peter Parker an absolute sweetheart deal--come work for them as an official government sanctioned superhero, complete with pay, and they would play ball with his secret identity. They had also wrested the last bits of control of the Spider-Man license from Wilson Fisk's clutches and were willing to give them to Peter and let him profit off of his own likeness, again, with his secret identity retained.

With how much this could provide for MJ and him as well as Aunt May, Peter took the deal on one condition--that it was part time, and that he'd be allowed to take the teaching position at Midtown at the same time.

They agreed.

And with this, Peter now felt that he had officially hit the big time. Spider-Man had gone from the weird guy in tights fighting ATM robberies in Queens to one of the most well known and recognizable "faces" in the world. He finally had real work/life balance with his alter ego, helping teach a new generation of kids in his day job and using his talents as Spider-Man to protect the world and even make money doing it in a way he knew his uncle would have been proud of. He could not be happier living with the love of his life, Mary Jane, and she in turn could not be happier seeing him happy for once in his life. And Aunt May could finally have the comfortable life Peter always knew she wanted, even if she did not admit it. The going would not always be easy, the hero life always had its bumpy roads, but Peter had finally found some measure of peace.

And this was the way it was for five years.

It all came to an end rather anticlimactically, with Peter getting injured in a fight with a low level threat, hurting his leg and foot in a way that was not healing right. It was the same foot that he had broken in the final fight with the Master Planner all those years ago, and now it was coming back to haunt him. With the other injuries he had sustained over the years starting to get to him as well and his personal threats taken care of, Peter decided it was time to call it quits. He retired as an official government super hero and decided to stick to teaching full time, devoting himself to his students and his wife, only returning to the webs when he ever felt he absolutely needed to.

Where does it go from here? Well, we'll see.

So yeah, it's a huuuuuge time skip, with a lot of neat looking developments that are basically glossed over. This is on purpose! Consider these five years to be a sort of set of "missing years" that are dual purpose--they both set the stage for the Spider-Man world that the final section of the story is built around, and it also serves as kind of a gray area that can be alternatively used to fill in blanks with stuff in the Greater Marvel Universe project, if you wanted to connect the two directly. So, like, if I wanted to have Spider-Man join the Avengers at some point in that project, that could take place here if you wanted to keep the continuity in place.

The whole dancing around him being a government sanctioned super hero instead of just saying he joins the Avengers or SHIELD or whatever is intentional as there's a lot of storyline baggage there with the Avengers and stuff that don't have a role in this story--if you want to imagine him as a member of the Avengers here that's fine, if you don't want to that's also fine. Schrodinger's Avenger.

But I did want to use this period and extra as an excuse to draw Spider-Man with the Avengers! I thought it would be fun thematically, graduating from my earlier Amazing Friends and Allies picture to a full blown Avenger. The picture itself is based on art from Ultimate Spider-Man #200 where MJ describes a dream she had of Peter leading the Ultimates in the future had he never died, though with some character substitutions here. I chose to depict the Avengers with basically the "core" Avengers cast as at least I imagine them in my mind--Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Giant-Man, Wasp, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision. As such, this was a huge artistic undertaking, I don't think any of my other extras have this many full body characters, so it took a while. Obviously the Avengers are just using their designs from my GMU project (though Hawkeye looks a little different...). I won't say definitively that this would be the Avengers roster he'd join if he did at this point, as I think it'd be pretty different just due to the timing, it's just a picture for fun, really. Don't try to interpret any canon from it, it's just a picture of Spider-Man with the Avengers that is more just representational of what this time in Peter's life could be imagined like--him as the top dog.
