    Thor
    Real Name: Thor Odinson
First Appearance: Journey Into Mystery #83 (August 1962)

In the eighties there was a man known as Donald Blake working at a joint government/university think tank in upstate New York known as Project PEGASUS. Blake worked alongside a fellow physicist Jane Foster with whom he had developed a relationship with. But Jane Foster developed terminal breast cancer while working on their project, and on her death bed Blake revealed the truth about himself to her, something no one else had ever known--Blake was in actuality a being from another world known as Asgard, where he was the eldest son of Odin, the Asgardian king. His real name was Thor Odinson, and he was a mighty warrior who wielded a special hammer forged in the heart of a dying star that allowed him to control lightning and thunder as if he was a god. But, over a century ago by Earth's reckoning, Thor was banished from Asgard, stripped of his strength, and separated from his hammer, Mjolnir, of which he was no longer worthy. He spent the next century wandering the world, taking new identities as the decades passed, vainly searching for a way back to his home world, his accrued knowledge eventually leading him to Project PEGASUS where he had hoped to open a wormhole to Asgard. But his search was fruitless, he found no return, he had only found love, which was going to be soon taken from him. Donald Blake disappeared that day.

Fast forward to modern times and people all around the world tell the tale of a man who wields the thunder itself in his hands, saving those he can but always disappearing before anyone can properly thank him. But S.H.I.E.L.D., beginning their Avengers Initiative, manage to track him down as they had connected the dots in the story, as Jane Foster had also disappeared when Donald Blake had gone missing. When pressed for his story the man calling himself Thor states that Jane Foster had gone with him to Asgard, and he would say nothing more on the matter, nor why he had returned to Earth. Thor accepted the offer to join the Avengers Initiative, not knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. partially did it to keep an eye on him.

    ----

See, told you I had a few more to upload today. Regarding S.H.I.E.L.D. keeping an eye on him, they don't really trust his story to be true, but of course it all is, they just don't know it when the Avengers are first forming. But I kinda wanted his backstory to be sort of mythic seeming, so the *exact* nature of how his hammer came back to him and such is intentionally left a mystery.

Design wise you can see he's pretty heavily based on Ultimate Thor, with some elements taken from his mainstream comic designs, like his boots and his armor on his arms, as well as his hammer of course. He was kind of an important character to design as he sorta defines Asgardian fashion going forward, which I decided to make more "comic book-esque" compared to my more grounded designs with a quasi-sci fi angle.

One more for today, I've been sitting on a lot of them for a while.

    --*UPDATE April 10th, 2019*--
Okay, here's a character I've wanted to update for a while. Early on I didn't stray much from my initial pencil sketches when moving to the final product, but I've since revamped how I do these and I take a lot more liberties nowadays to help push the designs further. Thor was a design I was never really satisfied with as I basically just had Ultimate Thor without a lot of embellishments and I wanted to do a more exciting design that harks back to his original comic design. This was also spurned on by me sketching out some future members of Thor's supporting cast and realizing how limited I had made his design initially, so I wanted the God of Thunder to be this really powerful looking presence.

So his armor now is much more ornate with a lot of call backs to his past designs, especially his original Jack Kirby look--there's even a "T" like symbol in his belt. The runes across his armor read "thunder" in ancient Germanic or something, at least according to Wikipedia, I dunno, I just thought it would look cool. And then the fur... still no cape, but one thing I was never satisfied with my original design is that I didn't find a lot of places to get some red in his design, so the fur kilt and collar and whatever helped see this to fruition. It also went into how I approached this design, specifically to make him look more Norse, like a true viking god.

I may have had the Immigrant Song blasting a few times while doing this design.

And then his hammer has been revamped into a longer handled sledge type weapon, just a design I thought looked neat and helped put my own spin on it. I also genuinely considered making him masked like my Loki design and had considered making this the sort of "standard" for my god characters but I figured Thor would show his face to the world.

Compare it to my original here.

    Loki
    Real Name: Loki Laufeyson
First Appearance: Journey into Mystery #85 (October 1962)

Not long after he joined the Avengers, the supposed god of thunder calling himself Thor told his companions that he was beginning to have strange dreams, visions of the "world tree" ablaze, the "nine realms" torn asunder, his home world of Asgard in ruin. The "rainbow bridge" had been cut, he said. The deceiver had been awakened and had their eyes set on Midgar--Earth. Thor demanded the shuttered Project PEGASUS be brought back online so he might return to Asgard through their experimental wormhole technology, but Nick Fury refused, saying the inherent danger the project posed was the reason it was shuttered. But Thor would not listen to reason, and when he defied Fury's orders, the Avengers were ordered to take him down. Not wanting to kill his new friends, Thor stood down and allowed himself to be defeated.

But with Earth's mightiest Avenger in quarantine, the darkness he had predicted came to pass. Fire lit the skies blood red, and incomprehensible beasts appeared around the globe. Thor explained to his captors, now all too willing to listen, what was coming. The beasts heralded the appearance of Thor's greatest foe, his half-sibling Loki. Sealed inside a tree on Asgard a millennia ago, Loki had descended into madness after they had claimed to have learned the true meaning of the Asgardian's existence. Loki had attempted to control the Nine Realms through the Norn Stones, and it seems the trickster had at long last accomplished the insane goal. Only Midgar remained, and it would take all of their combined power to overcome what would be the Avenger's first world ending scenario.

    ----

Spoilers--they beat Loki, who would of course become a recurring threat to Thor, the Avengers, and other heroes across the universe. Also, my Loki is identified as neither male nor female, and their illusory abilities allow them to appear as either depending on their whim.

Like my Thor origin I wanted to give some sort of mythic feel to Loki's. The details of how they came to to Odin's child is deliberately unclear as is how Loki came to escape imprisonment, to give a sense to the normal humans of Earth that the Asgardians simply "are." Also, while Loki appears as a "hero" every once in a while my Loki, at least at this stage, is pretty bad to the bone, more in common with Loki's early Journey Into Mystery appearances. Though I wouldn't rule out Loki becoming more sympathetic as the heroes learn more about them.

As for the design--Loki has a lot of incarnations through the years--classic Loki, Lady Loki, Kid Loki, Agent of Asgard, etc. I decided to combine elements of all of the Loki designs here into one. The clothing under the long coat is based on the Simonson years design, the long coat itself calls to the MCU design, the fur collar comes from more modern designs, the long black hair adorned with gold is akin to Lady Loki, etc. Their figure is deliberately vague, neither purely masculine nor purely feminine, and the full face mask was both an attempt to make Loki look scarier than normal and to disguise their gender. Also, I guess my Loki has blue skin based on their hands? I dunno.

    Beta Ray Bill
First Appearance: The Mighty Thor #337 (November 1983)

Loki's destruction of the Bifrost had more ramifications than just cutting off transportation between the Nine Realms. The Odinforce itself worked through the Bifrost to keep the seal on the greatest of the Asgardians' enemies in place. Once known as Muspelheim, the world of fire and brimstone, it was the home of Surtur, the hated fire demon who was fated to bring about Ragnarok--the end of Asgard. Sealed for eons, the dormant Muspelheim took the form of a star, and orbiting it was the inhabited planet of Korbin. With the breaking of the Bifrost the seal was broken, and the forges of Muspelheim started again, crafting the hated sword Twilight for its master, Surtur. The forges of Muspelheim output was so great that it destroyed the planet Korbin, with only a scant few Korbinites escaping in suspended animation aboard the great craft Skuttlebutt.

Skuttlebutt itself was piloted by the only remaining active Korbinite--Beta Ray Bill, the champion of Korbin. Transformed by Korbinite cybernetics into the perfect living weapon, Bill at first attacked the wandering Asgardian named Thor during the thunder god's quest to repair the Bifrost, mistaking Thor as an agent of Muspelheim. Their fight came to an end when Bill proved himself the only other being worthy enough to lift Mjolnir other than Thor and his father. Understanding now that Bill was a noble being with a pure heart and understanding the forces of Ragnarok were now at play, Thor gifted Bill the parting gift Odin had granted him when he began his quest--Stormbreaker, a hammer of even greater godly power than Mjolnir, intended to be Thor's kingly weapon, forged in the heart of Nidavellir. Together they drove off the forces of Muspelheim tailing the Skuttlebutt, and Bill promised that as soon as he found a safe haven for his people, he would stand with his brother in thunder against Surtur and his allies.

    ----

So yeah, he'd be exactly what you'd expect, one of Thor's greatest allies. And I'm sure he meets someone named Sif eventually...

Beta Ray Bill is a favorite character of mine and his story is a classic one, so I left it (mostly) intact here as far as I could for my universe. I liked the idea the MCU has with Stormbreaker being a "better" (maybe) weapon than Mjolnir and thought it would be cool if it was something of Thor's that he willingly gave up to Bill as a gift. Beyond that there's not much more you can change about Beta Ray Bill without betraying his character I think. I love how the names Skuttlebutt and Beta Ray Bill are just goofy as heck but the Asgardians treat them with dead seriousness.

His design is pretty straightforward--he's basically Beta Ray Bill filtered through my Thor design. It's actually kinda backwards--my updated Thor design was actually based on preliminary Beta Ray Bill sketches, when I realized I was making Bill more ornate than Thor was, so I had to update Thor in the process. Beyond that, you can see that it's basically my existing Thor armor modified to look like Bill's, with the extra lines and the shoulder things and the boots and whatever. I decided I wanted the armor to be more battle weary as I imagined him living a tougher life than Thor. And instead of a full cape or fur like my Thor he's got this smaller shoulder cape thing. And unlike my Thor design he has a helmet--I just couldn't imagine Bill without one. I also altered Bill himself, making his skin look makeshift and cybernetic, to sell his cyborg origin better--most people don't realize that Korbinites don't normally look like horse people--that's due to Bill's cybernetics.

    Odin
    Real Name: Odin Borson
First Appearance: Journey Into Mystery #85 (October 1962)

The mightiest of the mighty. The wisest of the wise. The proudest of the proud. He was Odin, the All-Father. For millennia he had ruled over Asgard and the Nine Realms, seated upon throne immortal. With one wave of his scepter supreme, Thrudstok, all in Asgard knew to kneel before his grace. Odin commanded the vast power that flowed within the Nine Realms, a power he commanded so fiercely that it became known as the Odinforce itself. But even the All-Father knew that with great power must also come great sacrifice--his lost eye, which he traded to drink from the Well of Knowledge, was symbolic proof.

It was this lesson that Odin had intended to teach the proudest of his children, the prince of thunder Thor. This was why he enchanted Thor's magic hammer so that none but those worthy may lift it. The All-Father's powers were in fact so great that they posed a danger even to their wielder. To replenish his strength, Odin often entered a deep rest known as the Odinsleep, and at this time was when Asgard was most vulnerable. This was the moment of weakness that Odin's wayward adopted child named Loki had exploited that allowed them to sever the Bifrost and take control of Asgard.

    ----

    Basically... yeah, that's Odin alright.

Odin is more of a plot anchor than a traditional character. Like, he's got depth and what not but he's ultimately a character that exists to serve Thor's mythos, so there's nothing you can change without getting away from the central tenants of Thor's world building.

But I did get to run wild a bit with his design! Odin actually has a frustratingly inconsistent design. Outside of his big beard and his yellow/blue color scheme he doesn't really have many central design motifs that stay consistent throughout his depictions. So I had to pick and choose what design I wanted to invoke--I went with one from the Simonson era in the eighties, I thought it looked the most "Odin" to me. And then that was obviously adapted to how I've depicted Thor and what not here, so he's got a fur in place of a standard cape. I also chose to give him a full face mask somewhat akin to my Beta Ray Bill look mixed with my Loki, something that disguises his humanity and sells him as this just primeval otherworldly king. But I also wanted him to have this absolutely commanding presence, and I came up with these kind of wing like structures with crazy looking rainbow colored drapes hanging down from them. Images of a nebula appear on them as well as a repeated runic word (that reads "Woden," a different interpretation of his name). They help make him look more alien while also giving him a much bigger, commanding profile.
