Widespread across the grasslands and open woodlands of Serina in the early Ultimocene are many rather similar species of small and very primitive circuagodonts known as smeerps, which both superficially resemble, and fill the ecological roles of, rabbits. Never any bigger than a hare, they are highly important in the ecosystems they inhabit as the primary if not nearly exclusive prey of the repandors and the primary limiting factor in the growth of razorgrass which tends to dominate grassland ecologies to the exclusion of other pasture and detriment of other animal species when they are not present to graze it down. Smeerps are exclusively vegetarian and eat primarily silica-rich grasses and a small percentage of woody plants. Soft herbs, preferred by other grazers, are rarely eaten, and so smeerps help to ensure a biodiverse habitat with abundant food for many other herbivores.

Smeerps closely represent the form that the larger and more specialized circuagodonts evolved from and are morphologically intermediate between these clades and the non-circuagodont poppits, their nearest relatives. Like most circuagodonts they have seasonal fur coats that become thin in summer, revealing camouflaging greenish skin patterns, and insulating in winter with a brown or gray pelage to hide against deciduous trees. Unlike poppits, smeerps don't generally live underground but rather above it; their young are able to walk at birth and are generally hidden in thickets or tall grass, attended by their mother just a few times per day. This is in contrast to the larger circuagodonts whose young evolved to be highly precocial and run with their parent nearly from birth. The survival rate of the young is very low, with predators catching most, but compensated for with a high birth rate, up to six annual litters of up to four kits per year in mild climates. Though any circuagodont has a powerful cutting bite that they will use as a last resort against an enemy, smeerps' primary defense besides fecundity is flight. They are rapid runners that strive to confuse their pursuers by dodging and backtracking, as at a run straight out their predators can outrun them. Despite this, few if any smeerps live to old age.

Sociality in these animals is the least developed in circuagodonts. Female smeerps are social only with their offspring, and males not at all. Bucks fight fiercely for breeding rights and are even aggressive toward females, dominating them with a bite to the neck and a generally larger weight. Females do not resist, as this aggression demonstrates the strength and vigor that will be inherited to her offspring, traits that will increase their odds of survival.

The armox is the largest of all circuagodonts, and one of the largest tribbetheres on land after the omniphages; it weighs up to 1,200 lbs. A descendant of the antlears, this species - a native of the northern taiga - has traded the dexterity of its mobile spiked ears for strength. With enormously wide, heavily armored ears that both rotate at their base and fold halfway along their length, the armox's ears have evolved into defensive shields that can be swung quickly around to protect the neck of the killing bites of large predators, such as the predatory grappler birds, and swept forward over the face to protect the eyes and snout from the sharp, slicing bites of the carnivorous circuagodonts.

Today bulky and fairly slow runners, armox are most immediately descended from a much more gracile ancestor that adapted to run on only one primary toe per limb, with the other digits shrinking or being lost entirely. Though speed is no longer its defense, the armox retains a single large hoof on each foot, with a pair of smaller, mostly vestigial dewclaws on each leg behind it.

Armox are very social herd-dwellers, relying on the collective defense of many individuals to form a living wall around their more vulnerable young, who take many years to develop their antlers to their fullest extent. Few predators, even the largest, can break through such a barrier. The only negative of the enormity of their horns is that the armox has lost the original benefit they provided as grasping manipulators and must feed closer to ground level. Perhaps because of this, it is primarily a far-northern species, living where trees rarely grow past its head height anyway and so avoiding being relegated to feed only on the sparse undergrowth of the taller southern forests. Their jaws function like loppers, cutting large branches which the creature chews and consumes entirely, wood and all.

The nest goblin is a very strange tribbet... it is adapted to emulate the appearance, sound, and behavior of a baby bird to solicit feeding from parent birds. Using its ears to mimic flapping wings, with the ability to adjust the color of its mouth to match the species it parasitizes, it is a highly successful aberrant relative of the tribbetheres that lives in the early Ultimocene, 255 million years pe.

Thylacosmilus was long assumed to be an apex predator like the saber-toothed cats, but recent research seems to dispute its abilities. The teeth are not quite aligned, there are no incisors, and also the proportions of this thing are pretty weird; plantigrade hind feet, tiny short front legs?

I love the idea it was an insectivore as HodariNundu depicted, and that the teeth were not sabers at all but tusks to break open termite nests. The lack of incisors could easily allow a big tongue to slide out to slurp up insects.

As the climate cools on Serina, climate change extinguishes what were once life-rich tropical forests as more northerly ecosystems are squeezed toward the equator in flight of advancing polar ice. Not every change of environment over the previous ten million years has resulted from ecosystems merely migrating to warmer ground, though - in some cases entirely new ones have popped up in response to the changes. With temperate sunflower-dominated forests moving to the equator, particularly along the southern coasts of Serinarcta, and tundra claiming ground where once was this forest, lying between these two is an entirely novel forest community known as the cactaiga. This cold-hardy, low-growing forest is comprised of cactus-like spiny plants very distantly related to the sunflower trees, but whose ancestors diverged from them virtually as soon as they were introduced to Serina. With photosynthetic tissues and few or no leaves, the trees of the cactaiga are descended from desert-adapted scrubland sunflower species that have found success in an increasingly cold climate using the same adaptations that served them well in Serina's deserts; thick layers of sharp, protective hairs and thorns that completely cover their tissues to protect from both water loss and herbivore attack. These defenses which also served to protect against sunburn and insulate against the cold desert night now provide protection against cutting winter winds. Growing in stands so thick that a man could not even crawl through the tangles of cutting spines and vicious thorns, the individually small trees grow together into a virtually impenetrable matrix, relying on one another for support and so functioning as a single enormous plant with millions of roots to survive winter storms in the harshest of areas that would snap broad-leafed trees like toothpicks.

The cactaiga first began spreading from isolated deserts across Serina about seven million years ago, following the trend of a cooling, drying climate, and today covers most habitable land - almost everywhere that the ground is freely-draining, as these desert-descended plants cannot survive waterlogged roots. This means that they dominate the middle third of Serinarcta almost entirely, giving way only to the low grassy tundra in the far north where the permafrost beneath the ground means water cannot drain and so the soil remains waterlogged throughout the summer. Broad-leafed forest, requiring milder conditions to compete, becomes restricted to primarily coastal regions along the Icebox Seaway where the influence of ocean currents, however cold, keep the land just warm enough for their survival.

Being dense and impenetrable, the cactaiga alone supports few herbivores. Though their seeds, born in the summer inside edible berries, are eaten by birds and molodonts, few leaf-eaters can consume the plants themselves. Spreading into every crevice and out-competing other plants almost everywhere in the cooling climate, it is not the cold that would directly cause the extinction of many megafauna but a loss of food and habitat as cactaiga replaces more edible food plants and sheltering environments. The herbivorous softbilled birds which have survived the loss of the tropical forests, such as the terries, find the environment completely lacking in food or shelter and so species become isolated from one another; many become trapped along the narrow band of northern tundra, between expanding glaciers and the vicious spiny forest that offers them nothing, where for now they can survive on the surviving softer vegetation, but where their future there is very uncertain. Circuagodonts, adapted to trimming woody trees, could persist along the margins, but would have great difficulty moving deep into the dense growth to migrate south or to find shelter from winter storms.

But the cactaiga is not without its own checks and balances. One species of tribbethere, previously seen as quite aberrant, localized, and specialized in its niche, has since evolved in tandem with the thorny sunflower trees in Serina's desert regions. The thorngrazer has diversified into more than ten species and followed their spreading food plants, continuing the evolutionary arms race between them that has now gone on for tens of millions of years. With enormous gnashing mouths armored with protective keratinized spines they are the only animals that can truly limit the growth of the cactaiga, browsing back the forest and eating away paths through the bramble that provide shelter to less powerful animals that could not otherwise survive here. Once fairly solitary, now large herds of thorngrazer descendants move through these cold forests and browse the hostile, cutting plants with seeming effortless ease, pulverizing the most ferocious plant defenses with their grinding enormous tooth plates. They open clearings in the brush to bed down for the night, and over many years these resting places become worn-down depressions with a very compacted soil; water fills them, and they become too damp for the cactaiga to grow back. Instead grasses and herbs take root - food for the terries and many other animals that cannot subsist off the cactaiga. In this way the thorngrazers become ecosystem engineers, actively building new habitats and increasing the biodiversity of the forest drastically, albeit inadvertently. What would otherwise be a harsh monoculture of plants few animals could utilize becomes a fairly varied forest community. Selectively trimmed by the feeding thorngrazers into a maze of clear-cut paths, the cactaiga - so potentially destructive - becomes a series of sheltering hedges: windblocks to shelter plants and animals alike from winter snowstorms. In this way the thorn forest becomes a series of thorn-walled gardens, intermixed with abundant small clearings and low-lying wetlands that provide a safe, sheltered oasis for many species in this rapidly changing world.

As their food plants spread across the continent, the thorngrazer followed. Over time populations became separated, without gene flow between them, and new species formed adapted to more specific regions or ways of feeding. As the climate cooled, all of them had to grow thicker fur coats, losing their brightly colored exposed skin at least in winter, though sometimes molting their hair from their faces in summer to reveal bright patterns in the mating season. Some grew taller, feeding upon the forest from the top down, while others shrunk to more easily move through the forest down to the ground, maintaining grazed-out tunnels in the thick vegetation to hide from predators. Many have begun to evolve new, more specialized facial horns from the protective spines along their mouths, switching the function from defense to offense. One species, the sextacorn thorngrazer, has developed six prominent horns, two on either side of the mouth and four on top of the snout, which the male uses in combat for mates and females use to defend their calves from newly-evolved ice age predators such as the saber-toothed circuagodog.

As Serina changes, many plants and animals alike will lose the game of life. Yet as long as something can be exploited, some groups will evolve to do to. The reign of the cactaiga and the thorngrazer over Serina will be but a temporary one, yet in the end... so are even the longest reigns.

    Caliban from Star Fleet.

Professor Caliban is a scientist of the Imperial Alliance on Commander Makara's Battlecruiser.

The silver-skinned, frock-coated Caliban has a telescopic lens replacing his right eye and a mechanical right arm, not to mention a Russian accent. He's unlike Makara and Orion in that he doesn't appear to have a symbiote as such.

He is the Director General of Science under the direct control of the Imperial Master himself and it is said that nobody can equal his skill in the development of new and murderous weaponry. He gains pleasure from the remodeling and programming of human bodies, making people think that he is really quite perverse.

It can be assumed that Caliban was acquired as part of Makara and Orion's promotion to the Executive Council. Due to her continued failures against Star Fleet, Makara calls upon Caliban's perverse skills to construct a mantis-like cyborg assassin known as "The Bionic Assassin" to assassinate Lamia, in direct violation of the Imperial Master's orders. Though his creature fails in assassinating Lamia, it does succeed in killing Dr. Benn.
