    M137--Valkyrie by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Valkyrie
    Real Name: Brunnhilde
First Appearance: The Avengers #83 (December 1970)

To be a Valkyrie was one of the highest honors an Asgardian could achieve. Those who fell in honorable battle who had lived lives of exceptional valor were given a second chance after death, their souls diverted from the siphon in Niflheim to the sacred land of Valhalla. There, be they man or woman, their souls would be transformed into the Handmaidens of Death, the Valkyrior. In an agreement between Odin and Hela, they were granted powers beyond mortality, the secret defenders of the balance holding the nine realms together.

One such Valkyrie was given the name Brunnhilde, and she was tasked with watching over Odin's son Thor as he toiled on Earth after he lost the right to his hammer. From the shadows, Brunnhilde defended the disgraced prince through the years as outside forces attempted to take advantage of his depowered state. Her task was to end when Thor was once again found worthy, but she did not return to the Bifrost as planned. Having recognized that the Valkyrior was little more than a shackled collection of slaves for Odin and Hela, Brunnhilde rejected their ways and chose to remain on Earth. She had joined forces with the world's resident Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Stephen Strange, along with his fellow Defenders, as a gambit to wrest the control of the Valkyrie's from their eternal fate.

    ----

So yeah, she's a member of the Defenders alongside Dr. Strange and Hellcat (among some others). While Dr. Strange is their founder and leader, Brunnhilde plays the role of their field commander. Dr. Strange in turn keeps her hidden from Odin's sight with his magic.

I changed quite a bit about Valkyrie's backstory--the chosen warriors who get to visit Valhalla in the afterlife and the Valkyries are one and the same in my continuity, being a big change. Brunnhilde here was not born a woman, the souls of Valhalla are reborn that way. Their role as Odin and Hela's cleanup crew is my invention as well, something that is kind of left as morally ambiguous to a certain degree. This was also my way of having her fall in with the Defenders (the team I most closely associate Valkyrie with), which you may remember from my Hellcat entry that it was a team that Dr. Strange was forming. So that's three Defenders members thus far.

Also want to mention that "first appearance" when it comes to Valkyrie in the comics is really convoluted, as she was first seen as a disguise that Amora the Enchantress used before being spun off as her own character. So that is the first appearance listed here, which wasn't *technically* Brunnhilde proper but it was later retconned that it kinda sorta was because Amora had Brunnhilde captured and using her power to impersonate her? It's confusing, so I'll just leave it there.

For her design she's kind of supposed to be a marrying of her traditional design and Tessa Thompson's look in the MCU, both of which I'm pretty fond of. So she's black like the MCU Valkyrie, but her outfit is based pretty directly on her traditional look with some modifications. I also gave her a blonde streak running through her hair as a reference to the comic Valkyrie and I thought it looked really striking. The white face paint is based on a concept art for Thor: Ragnarok, and the writing on her arms, which is partially obscured, is germanic runes for "Valkyrie," roughly. She's also big and muscular, Valkyrie's stated height in the comics is 6'3", so I thought she should look suitably huge. The fur collar can be seen as kind of a unifying aesthetic with Thor and Odin, and the cape became these ethereal looking tassels, similar to Odin's wing cape things.

    M138--Sif by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Sif
First Appearance: Journey Into Mystery #102 (March 1964)

The dark haired daughter of Asgard, sometimes known as Sif the Unstoppable. Considered one of the most highly skilled warriors in all of the Nine Realms, Sif was the sister to Heimdall, the guardian of the rainbow bridge, and former lover of Thor, the prince of Asgard. Like her brother, Sif possessed an affinity for the Bifrost itself, gifting her the ability to transport herself along the bridge without outside assistance, unlike other Asgardians. For this reason she was a favored warrior for preemptive strikes against the foes of the All-Father, and she could often be seen leading the Warriors Three alongside Thor into pitched battle.

Usually seen as one of the most haughty and disdainful of mortals among the Asgardians, Sif could not understand Thor's love for the human Jane Foster during his trials on Midgard. But when the Bifrost was repaired following Thor's journey to fix it, Sif was tasked to use her ability to traverse the rainbow bridge to reach out to the mortal Korbinite Beta Ray Bill. Bill had proved a useful ally to Thor, the only mortal to ever wield Mjolnir's powers on his own, and he had pledged allegiance to Asgard in their coming fight against the forces of Ragnarok. Sif was to assist Bill in his quest for a new home for his people, and in their journey into mystery Sif came to understand the love Thor had found among mortals.

    ----

Thor doesn't like to mention it, but Sif dumping him was partly to blame for his banishment from Asgard, as he had gone against his father's wishes to attack the Frost Giants of Jotunheim to prove himself to her again, but it was all for naught--his foolhardiness was a big reason why she left him to begin with!

So I dunno, there's not much interesting new story elements here, she's a standard figure of Thor's supporting cast. I decided to put some more emphasis on her oft-forgotten teleportation powers for some extra flavor and had her go on some journey (into mystery!) with Beta Ray Bill as a bonding experience--they're one of my favorite couples in the comics. Beyond that... it's Sif!

But her design is what I really decided to push here. I struggled for a while to come up with something distinct, I feel a lot of her looks kinda run together. I had an early idea to have her be some sort of Asgardian... ninja? Yeah, that didn't work out. But the continued sketching of various armors and outfits based on her Simonson design from the eighties (hey, like most of my Asgardian characters...!) I eventually came up with this kinda heavy padded coat like armor, with fur underneath it. This all combined with a wolf like face mask (something common in my non-human affiliated Asgardians) made for a really distinct looking warrior design that was both unique among Sif designs I've seen but at the same time definitely recognizably Sif. I really like the color scheme here. Overall one of my favorite designs I've done for this project. Her weapon is intended to be a detachable double bladed sword like in the MCU. The runes on her sword are partially cut off, but they read "Sifjar," the old Norse word her name comes from (it roughly means "marriage," if you're wondering).

    M051--Namor the Sub-Mariner by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Namor the Sub-Mariner
    Real Name: Namor McKenzie
First Appearance: Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939)

A superhuman calling himself "Namor" revealed himself in the days prior to the appearance of Galactus. Offering his services to stop the world destroyer, he was a valuable ally to the Fantastic Four and the rest of the world's forces, but his true nature eluded them. He continued to support the hero community following the repelling of Galactus. His strength was almost in a class of its own, and there were even reports of him flying with no real visible means of propulsion. He claimed he was "from Atlantis" but everyone figured it was an act, and the public at large considered him to be a run of the mill mutant (albeit one with exceptional powers). Reed Richards, however, was convinced there was something more to him and had doubts to his motivation. Namor definitely did not speak as if he was from anywhere on the known world. The other members of the Fantastic Four liked him enough, and Namor in particular seemed to like Sue Storm, which didn't particularly endear him to Reed.

His true nature was revealed when he invited Sue to his home. Sue tentatively agreed, with the rest of the Fantastic Four secretly monitoring the trip. To their surprise, Namor had told the absolute truth--he was indeed from Atlantis, a city located deep in the ocean, its residents capable of living and breathing under the waves. When Sue and Namor arrived at his grand palace, he revealed his true motivation--he told Sue his tremendous powers were the result of the coupling between a human man and an Atlantean woman, and to continue the royal line he intended to make her his queen. Sue turned him down, but Namor insisted it wasn't a request. Suddenly fearing for her life Sue fought her way out and the rest of the Fantastic Four managed to spirit her out of the ocean, but Namor pursued them. He was more than a match for the other three, but when Sue came between him and the other members, he relented--he would not harm her. Namor agreed to leave them be, but told Sue that there would always be a throne waiting for her if she chose it.

    ----

Namor would eventually mellow out a bit and become the mainstay hero/rival/occasional villain that we all know him for.

Despite Atlantis's Atlantic location (hence the name I guess) I decided to make Namor look somewhat south east Asian, like a Pacific Islander, with Maori esque tattoos on his arm, which I guess is kinda like Aquaman in the DC movies a bit? Oh well. Namor himself has a lot of well known recurring outfits in the comics, but I decided to stick closest to his most well known one, the ole green speedo thing, which I designed to look a little bit more otherworldly. I also elected to change his goofy little wings on his feet into fins. Not sure how he flies, but it's not like little tiny wings on your feet would make much difference there, either. He's also got a lot of scars, which I elected to give him to look like he's battle worn. He's seen a lot of action in his days and is much older than he looks.

    UPDATE FEBRUARY 24, 2021

I've thought my Namor could do with a redo for a while. His proportions were off and I thought I could do more to make his look more regal and kingly. I thought his newer "villain" look that originated in the recent Avengers and Invaders series was one that I thought pulled a lot of his designs together, the best of a lot of his looks. So it became something of a basis for my redo. So there is a lot more going on in this design than my original. The fin on his shoulder is supposed to be decorative, there to sell his kingly position.

Got one more redo coming this week.

Here's the original for comparison: i.imgur.com/PdTtS2M.png

M033--Silver Surfer by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Silver Surfer
    Real Name: Norrin Radd
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966)

After the Fantastic Four had gained their powers from it, Reed and Sue continued closely monitoring the "silver beacon" that was pointed towards Earth. It eventually became apparent that this beacon was in fact moving towards Earth, and was merely the front most point of a vast cosmic power moving through the cosmos--almost as if it was a herald for its arrival. The true source of the energy that the beacon guided was unimaginably gigantic. It was the Kree defector Mar-Vell who identified the anomaly heading to Earth--known to the Kree as "Galactus," it was an eldritch entity responsible for consuming entire worlds. The Kree had been tracking Galactus through the starways by way of a computer program known to Earthlings as "Smokeworld," the damaged machine that Ultron had transformed into Vision. When the Kree discovered that Galactus had its sights set on Earth they stationed observation posts in an attempt to witness the complete destruction of the human race, Mar-Vell stationed on Earth to prevent humans from reaching the stars (to which he had defected).

A few days prior to the arrival of Galactus, the silver beacon made Earthfall, and its true nature became apparent--it was actually a humanoid alien clad in a silvery skin, riding aboard a living slab of its own cosmic power akin to a surfboard. Dubbed the "Silver Surfer" by the people of the world, he introduced himself as Norrin Radd to the Fantastic Four, and explained who he was and the true nature of their powers. He was in fact a thrall of the world eater, imbued with just a fragment of Galactus's power so that he might soar through space to find sustenance for his master. He had been the herald of Galactus for eons and was desperate to find a way to put a stop to the cycle of destruction, and when he detected the Fantastic Four's probe he used a fraction of the fraction of cosmic power Galactus had given to him and gifted it to the four so that they might become heralds of Earth and put a stop to Galactus alongside him.

    ----

Of course he would eventually be freed from Galactus and become a space-faring hero in his own right. His board kind of "grows" out of the bottoms of his feet, it's more metaphysical than something he carries around with him.

Design wise, it's the Silver Surfer, there's only so much you can do to a naked silver guy. I had at first designed him to be more alien looking, with no nose or mouth, but I decided against it, as I felt his visible humanity is what allows you to sympathize with him at first sight. Though his head and eye shape are still kind of alien in design. Regarding his kind of segmented look I imagined him being a man of silvery metal skin like the Thing is made of rocks--the power cosmic has utterly transformed him. The slight rainbow hues on his limbs are sort of supposed to be a hint to the power within himself.

    UPDATED FEB 26, 2021

After doing some more cosmic level characters after him I felt my old depiction of the Silver Surfer did not quite keep up. I also realized that though it was important for me to keep him vaguely human looking, I could have pushed the more alien aspects of him further. So those are both of the goals that I set out to achieve with my new design. More unusual, alien like proportions, as well as something more bright and stunning. So that's what you got here. I decided to push more of the rainbow effect throughout his entire body, I imagine it is light refracting both off and through him, in a rainbow of colors symbolizing his endless potential. And there's a bit of a starfield pattern going on too, to connect him to Galactus more.

I have updated the lineup with the first 100 characters with my new Namor and Silver Surfer designs, go check it out.

    M139--Quasar by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Quasar
    Real Name: Wendell Vaughn
First Appearance: Captain America #217 (January 1978)

Far across the cosmos there were tales of the one who wielded the Quantum Bands. Hailed as the "Protector of the Universe," it was difficult to separate myth from fact when it came to the exploits of the Quasar. The Quantum Bands were ancient instruments of great power, capable of bending light to their users' whims, but the bands were choosy about who could wield them. Their creator was said to be Eon, the forgotten Xandarian god of time, and only those Eon had deemed pure of heart could wear them, lest they be disintegrated. The last Quasar had faded into history, per the official Nova Corps, when he sacrificed himself to subdue the living embodiment of the void itself.

Prior to forming the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill, the Earth born would be "Star-Lord," had made it his mission to track down the Quantum Bands. Quill believed that the last Quasar had in fact been an Earth born human like he was. Near as Quill could determine, he was an astronaut named Wendell Vaughn who was on the first manned flight through the solar system in the late seventies. Sent alongside his partner Vance Astro, Earth lost contact with their capsule and they were presumed lost. While Quill was not sure what had happened to Astro, he was sure Vaughn was the last Quasar. Quill's quest to track down the Quantum Bands was what landed him in hot water with the Nova Corps--the bands themselves were now being used as a power source in the Kyln itself, and in attempting to confiscate them he risked unleashing the very beast that Vaughn had sacrificed himself to contain.

    ----

Part of Quill's fascination with Vaughn comes from him being a human legend in intergalactic society, something Quill aspires to be. He wouldn't admit it, but part of his Star-Lord persona is based on the type of badass Quill imagined Vaughn to be.

So I have a lot of ideas for the Quantum Bands and all that and part of this in turn forced me to rethink Quasar entirely. So he's one of the most heavily modified characters I've done for this project thus far. I thought it would be fun to have him be a more historical figure, someone who by modern times has already faded into history. So he's this enigmatic legend of a hero, the biggest badass the universe had ever seen, which is quite different from the plucky young hero he was back in his heyday in the eighties and nineties in the Marvel comics! But maybe that's how he started out back then. The idea that Star-Lord looked up to him to the point that his modern persona is actually kind of based on what he believed Quasar was like was a late idea that I really liked. Oh, and he's tied to Vance Astro somehow... we'll see how that goes later I guess.

Rethinking his origins meant I had to rethink his design pretty heavily too. Changing his race was an early idea I had, just on a whim. Originally I had thought to draw him as he would have looked in his golden years, but thought it would be more interesting to make him look like he would have at the end of his career. He's mostly based on his Annihilation era design, especially his armor, which is intended to be Xandarian in origin. But it's worn and beat up from all the adventures he's had over the years. The mask I thought helped make him look more mysterious and distant. Intimidating, almost. His cape is now a long scarf of sorts that his wears kinda like a cape. The gold on his costume became hard light constructs created from the Quantum Bands, which I thought was a fun visual. This is one of my most drastic redesigns but I had a lot of fun with him.

    M140--Martyr by Green-Mamba on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
    Martyr
    Real Name: Phyla-Vell
First Appearance: Captain Marvel #16 (January 2004)

Following the Kree named Mar-Vell's sacrifice to stop Thanos once and for all, much of the destruction the mad titan had wrought had been undone. But not everything was patched up so cleanly--including the freeing of the prisoners on the Kyln. The unleashing of infinity had an adverse effect on the Quantum Bands, causing the power holding the Nova Corps' worst prisoners to dissipate. And in the chaos that followed, the bands themselves went missing. Peter Quill, leading those of the Guardians of the Galaxy still left, tracked down the bands in their quest to help contain the Kyln's prisoners, and found they were now in the hands of Phyla-Vell, the youngest daughter of the late Mar-Vell.

Her father had wielded the Nega Bands--Kree made simulacrums of the Quantum Bands--and those were now broken, scattered across the cosmos in thousands of pieces. Mar-Vell's family on Hala was gifted the pieces the Kree empire found, but when Phyla touched them, she could feel her father talking to her. His words were vague and the instructions murky, but she knew she had to piece the Nega Bands back together, lest the zone of negative energy they drew their power from be unleashed in their plane of existence. The Quantum Bands were the key, the only devices left that could reforge the Nega Bands--that was why she stole them, and to her amazement they did not reject her, becoming their new master. She had intended to work alone, referring herself only as the "martyr" in honor of her deceased father, but she was convinced to work together as a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy.

    ----

Which is where she'd meet Moondragon, the love of her life. Aww.

So, a surprise second GMU update this week! I had extra time and saw I could make it work, so I figured why not. I might do this more frequently in the future, I'm way ahead on character sketches and wanna get some of these characters done some time or another! This won't be a regular occurrence, but it'll happen every once in a while when I feel like it.

Followed up Quasar with... another Quasar! I usually try to not do something like that but I wanted to show how the Quantum Bands are used in the present by a character, and Phyla-Vell is a fun character. While I refer to her as "Martyr" here, she's really based on her Quasar incarnation. I used the Martyr name because it's the only super hero name of hers that's really exclusive to her. But yeah she's got the Quantum Bands and light bending powers rather than being an avatar of Oblivion like she actually was as Martyr. She also doesn't owe her existence to time/reality warping like in the comics (where she was retconned into existence by her brother, Genis, or something to that effect) and I think she's just pure Kree. So Mar-Vell had a family back on Hala that I didn't mention before.

For her design she obviously has strong roots in my Captain Marvel designs, which I combined with her Quasar design. So she's wearing some sort of Kree soldier uniform of some sort that has a coat and hood built right into it, as a reference to her cloak. Her outfit looks really regal and military-esque, maybe it is an actual Kree officers' uniform or something? Not sure what her job was before getting the Quantum Bands. Like in Wendell Vaughn's design, the starburst pattern on her outfit is a hard light construction thanks to her quantum bands, and of course her sword is too.

In the Second Season episode entitled, "Days of Future Smash: The Dino Era: Part One," we encounter yet another bit of silly fun in an alternate universe where intelligent dinosaurs rule the Earth. It stands to warped reason that, in that dino-verse, the version of General "Thunderbolt" Ross would be an armored type of dino. Enter: the ankylosaurus General Rossasaurus. It was difficult to keep a smile or a smirk off my face as I designed this character. Hey, it's a show for the kids, right? And dinosaurs are all the rage again.
I hope you like it, and thanks so much for viewing!

As a freelance assignment, I was asked to render the characters on-model for a freeze-frame splash, based on a storyboard rough, and emulating the design style established by Jeff Wamester. This image is an isolated shot of Fandral which I only recently decided to have some fun polishing up, adding my own color selections.

Cinsade Brawler- Mercy's Reach by PenUser on DeviantArt

Hello! Another one of these cutaways I made for the Mercy's Reach RPG project. More info you on it you can find over at:

    twitter.com/thesolunion

The Cinsade Brawler is a comparatively more low-tech exosuit than the larger Minerva- and Void Knight armors, but that is due to its main design standpoint: it is made to be a weapon deployed en masse by regular non-augmented(not heavily anyway) individuals and as such ease of manufacture is key. The suit is one size fits all design for anyone below 6'5" featuring a void-rated triple membrane with ballistic and energy weaponry protection and it's own thruster system(installed separately for void combat). The suit is computerized with minimal emergency life support systems and a location beacon should the pilot be wounded and/or stranded.
