In the August 1940 National Geographic published an article on Malta's Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The Hypogeum's exact purpose is unknown but it seems to be a place of worship, with many features in common with above ground temples. Beyond the Hypogeum are rumored tunnels and sacrificial pits, now closed to the public.

The Nat Geo article had this to say about them, "Prehistoric man built temples and chambers in these vaults. In a pit beside one sacrificial altar thousands of human skeletons were found. Years ago one could walk underground from one end of Malta to the other. The government closed the entrances to these tunnels after schoolchildren and their teachers became lost in the labyrinth while on a study tour and never returned.”

In response to the article, a British Embassy worker named Lois Jessup gave a personal encounter she'd had in those very tunnels to the Borderline Science Magazine.

Lois had been on a tour with her coworkers when they reached the end of the tour in a burial chamber. Looking around, Lois noticed that there was a narrow passage that appeared to lead into a cave. Feeling adventurous, she begged the tour guide to let them have a look. The man eventually allowed that, "You're on your own but you won't get far."

Three of her friends decided to go with her, while two stayed with the guide. Lois led the group as they squeezed through the passageway and she emerged onto a narrow ledge on the edge of a vast underground cavern. Across the cavern, shapes moved in the darkness. She could barely make them out but she saw towering figures covered in dingy white fur striding along a distant cliff. She froze, blocking the path onto the ledge. The person behind her asked what the holdup was and the distant hairy giants turned towards her. They began raising their arms in her direction and wind began to gust in the cavern, blowing out her candle. Lois clung to the wall in the near dark and felt something wet and slimy pass by her. She pushed her way back into the passageway to the burial chamber and forced her friends to go with her.

After hearing that school children had gone missing in the area, Lois tried to revisit the site but found it blocked off and the new tourguide had no recollection of the one that had let her in mere weeks ago.

Ok, I'm not even being subtle but the report straight up sounds like she wandered into a Quake level. Lois is lucky the Shamblers only blew wind at her and not lightning.

EPA Patrol log AK-023-01 - Drone diving squad 02. Diver Jonathan Mckenzie

I was called out from Valdez today to investigate potential underwater pirating activity on the tanker route. The global oil crisis is really pushing people to extremes. As per EPA regulations I went as part of an independent investigation. The PMC's and private security handle actually dealing with the pirates. We were sent to monitor environmental conditions and check for any hazards to the water.

My fellow diver, Hernandez, and I were sent out with Agloolik, 1 of 2 of our Orca drones. Nuliajuk was in the dry dock for maintenance.

As we neared the target area the amount of oil in the water confirmed our fears that there indeed was a pirate attack in progress. We called in the incident to HQ and began surveying the area hoping all the while that we wouldn't become the next target.

Hey guys. Got my brain blasted by Black Fish. Then I did some research on the Exxon Valdez incident which occurred in 1989 and the Deepwater Horizon incident which happened back in 2010. Did some more research on the Alaska Oil Pipeline and I've always wanted to do something Alaskan since I went there earlier this year.

It was a lot of fun.

The Orca is a powerful underwater drone. The head is heavily armored with most of the sensitive electronics located further back towards the mid section. The body is dotted with ball cameras giving the drone near 360 degree view in all directions. These add to the drones impressive array of detection methods. The artificial muscle structures for underwater drones are much denser giving it the much needed strength to propel itself underwater. They work more efficiently when deployed in packs but are quite capable of working independently.

*For those who are curious Agloolik and Nuliajuk are Inuit sea deities.

Mongolia 2156

The bitter cold stung her face as she reached the peak. The repeated gusts of wind from the drone landing behind her didn't help. Once the great Eagle situated itself the pair looked over the steppe with sharp eyes. The various herds of goats, sheep, horses, camels, and yaks from the nomads looked like ants against the great snow covered peaks on the other end of the valley. Nothing out of the ordinary to report.

Temulin and her Eagle drone had the responsibility of watching over the Nomads and protecting the herds from bandits. With international relations crumbling in Central Asia the Border Defense Force played a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the Mongolian nation. A local to this part of the steppe, Temulin felt at home up the mountains. Settling in for the days watch the two of them continued their vigil, ever at the ready to protect the Mongol way of life.
