Which means there will be new stuff for us that have not read the Vigilius ablaze stuff ;)

    Agree

and some belt bling + transfear sheats

Personally I would like some more IG upgrade kits to make it possible to make IG:s that don't look like a colourswaped Cadians without having to buy a whole other box of models.

And some "generic" Space Marine upgrade kits like:
Death Cult - skull helmets, skull and bone sholderpads, time keepers (like hourglasses), power-scythes and sickles, grim reaper ikons, bone bling, etc.
Ecclesiarchy - religious imagnery, capirote covered helmets, shields shaped as ikons, etc.

and some upgrade kits for different enviorments

Most of the upgrade kits no longer have the transfers anymoreat least the ones sold to US customers.

Raven Guard, White Scars and some Iron hands upgrade kits have them but Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists, and Ultra Marines do not.

I have gone through several DA upgrade kits for Primaris and firstborn myself and my friends who play SW, Fists and Ultramarines Confirm there kits do not come with them(I have bought a Ultra marine one as I want to build a kill team force with Uriel Ventris.

For Dark Angels the way to get the 40k style heraldry is via Indomitius. Box and the big transfer sheet it has with several chapters, or buying Death wing, Ravenwing or Dark Angels veterans its the same for the with the chapter specific units foe other chapters except the Templars who don't get transfers but have the largest upgrade kit for Firstborn marines . All other troop choices come just with Ultra Marines transfers for marines.

Surprisingly horus heresy plastic Mark III, Mark IV, and Terminator kits come with either Space Wolves and Thousand Sons or Ultra Marines and Word Bearers as they kits were originally put together as ways to add onto the Betrayal at Calth or Burning of Prospero boxes.

I stocked up on the First Legion Forge world transfers around the holidays(I ordered 4 transfer sheet). The forge world transfers on are really nicer having lots of different stuff on them besides the Chapter symbols for the Marines and Vehicles. Stuff like Banners for Ancients per Vehicles. Specialist heraldry and stuff like that.

For instance if you wanted to build a one of a Consercrators army or a Star Phantoms army for 40k you can use the Dark Angels transfer sheet from Forgeworld as those chapter heraldry is the same as the Dark Angels Dread wing(for the Star Phantoms) and the Firewing for the consecrators.

Based on GW's homepage so should at least the primaris upgrade kits of Salamanders, and Imperial Fist have their own transfear sheets.

Many chapter symbols are based on squad/honour markings from different transfer sheets.

Yeah most of t2nd to 4th founding chapters(ones created when the veterans of the Heresy where still alive) have there chapter symbols based on Legion unit or honour markings.

Other non Dark Angels examples.are the Black Templars using heraldry of the Imperial Fist first company of the heresy(as their founder was Sigismund) The Temple Brethern and the Executioners chapter Using the twin axes of their Imperial Fist first assault cadre which was led by fafnir rann who after the heresy became there first chapter master.

Then we have the Cowled Wardens who use one of the transfears from the DA's HH sheet, the Emperor's Wolves whose symbol is a Space Wolves Grey Hunter marking, the Angels Numinous use the standard Lieutenant symbol, and lots of chapters use the Commander symbol

I hope the Sisters of Battle comic book will be good, I liked Marneus Calgar (though I read some people were upset about the changes in his backstory), I am not that familiar with the character but it was nice seeing the Wh40k universe.

From the other places.I interact with 40k fans the issue was really the nerfing of the Lord of Skulls in the one issue.

But then again this is Calgar who swatted a swarm lord on the 2nd try.

The complains seems to come from that they only saw the image of him coup de grâce-ing the Lord of Skulls, and seems to think that he take it on by himself instead of running making a tactical retreat from it until he can call for reinforcement, and later just deliver the killing blow.

I have to double check this but this but what I remember so did he not really have much of a backstory (from his pre-Marine day) to change. People were just sour becoue their asumptions about his backstory was changed.

Did some research on the issue via wikis and contact with my buddy who is a Smurf lore guru

He had very little backstory prior to the comic. He just a homeworld name And in older editions. he it said he served as a neophyte in the armoury meaning he was at one point slotted to be a techmarine after being rescued from Hive Fleet Locust as a child

But that stuff was retcon when they changed Hive Fleet Behemoth in 4th edition. to be first contact With the Tyranids and in that he is already Chapter Master meaning he had no canon backstory prior the first contact with the bugs in lore.

Calgar is the oldest chapter master in terms of real world having a model though his firsr model was called Lord Macragge in 1st. He got his full name in 2nd edition which is when they first introduced Azrael and Dante as playable for the Dark Angels and Blood Angels respectively (Logan Grimnair of the Space Wolves was 3rd edition, the Wolves got Ragnar Blackmane and Njall Stormcaller in 2nd edition before they got there Chapter Master)

As a Dark angels player in Feel very lucky that Azraels backstory has remained mostly unchanged for 1993 and 2nd edition.

Then a kit bash of a 40k DA veterans squad with some third party heads and helmets to have robed 30k Veteran Despoilers.with Hoods over the more 30k helmet types(the ones in the DA veterans box are a little too late for Heresy) and bearded heads.1

Also for those whonhave been waiting for it Mortis is coming to audio book Saturday

    Yeah,

The sheer amount of chapters that are some variant of Red or Blue is scary. Probably because a lot of them are just a chapter someone created that GW canonized with a single mention(many have no lore) and since Red and Blue stand out On the table lots of people created chapters with those colors.

True that, but with many of the blue ones are they going a bit more creative regarding secondary colours than the red ones.

    That's also true.

Also canonically its because the Ultramarines, and Blood Angels have alongside the Imperial fists the most successor chapters. the Dark Angels issues with the High Lords over suspected legion building(ie the whole Unforgiven working together) meant the High Lords rarely created knew successors for them pre Ultima Founding. The Wolves issue with the Wulfen, the fact that the Salamanders,Raven Guard and Iron hands where decimated at The Drop site Massacre and had lower stockpiles of gene seed after meant that two of the three legions that the High lords could create new chapters from where Red and Blue as there colors.

Add to the fact that White Scars had red as one of their two main colors and several not their successors use it

And that's a lot of red.

the Blood Angels and their successors like the Dark Angels and there's tend to be extremely close, alot of the Blood Angels successors want to show that they are blood angles. Many ultra Marines successors have blue in their colors but there are also those like the Scythes of the Emperor or the Silver skulls who have no blue at all. I think there are only like two Blood Angels successors that have no red.

unlike say the Dark Angels who had a completely different color scheme during the heresy (and several of whose successors retained the legion colors) the Blood Angels and Ultra Marines did not and therefore don't have that option to show the connection.

That's a good theory but I think it falls on that we have (at least) eight Chapters - the Rampagers (WS); Genesis, Sons of Orar (Um); Red Templars, Exorcists (IF); Red Talons (IH); Imperial Talons (RG); and Blood Ravens (?) - that all are known non BA successors that have red as their main colour and only some smaller item on their armour in an other colour (if even that). Then we also have lots of Chapters (for now) of unknown origin or culture* that has red as their main colour and only some smaller item on their armour in an other colour - Angels of Fire, Crimson Paladins, Emperor's Hawks, Heralds of Vengeance, Red Hunters, Red Legion, Red Wolves

    * which means they could be BA successor but could just as well be anything else

Finished Sword of Calth non spoilers review

    Things I likeD
    • The depiction of Ventris adjusting to being a Primaris, both physically and psychologically. He is dealing with the physical changes pretty well, though there is a significant amount of pain involved, he struggles adjusting mentally, he has a type of imposter syndrome As he does not feel like he is Uriel Ventris anymore. There is a funny moment where he reunites with Pausanius(who is canonically one of the tallest Firstborn Marines of the era, only a few are taller like the Minotaur and Carcadon chapter masters, Pausanius has to wear armor that is a mix of terminator and normal marks). And notices he is a head taller than his friend who used to tower over him.
    • the secondary characters are great. An Engineer battalion from the guard, a tech priest, a Magos and the twins who are the hereditary governors of the planet they are on are all interesting.
    • The brief appearance of Guilliman is different, most depictions of Guilliman in the post heresy deal with him struggling with the weight of the imperium on his shoulders. This time he is a proud and supportive dad encouraging Uriel.
    • The depiction of Lone Primaris marine fighting alongside Firstborn. It shows the differences and similarities.
    • The return of the other 4th company characters(Pausanius, Learrchus, Peleus, Cyprian) and some others like Tech marine Harkus (one of the coolest characters in 40k, a grumpy Dreadnought Tech marine) and Sergeant Telion of the 10th Company (the Ultramarines great sniper and trainer of scouts).
    • A sniper duel between a Necron and Tellion(with one of his scouts acting as spotter)
The things that I did not like.
    • Story is basic Marines v Necrons, not much different from older stuff like the older Dammnos campaign novels featuring Cato Sicarius.
    • Too short. Full price for what is really a novella
The issue I mentioned in a previous post about the Fact Ventris is depicted in the novel in the Gravis variant of Mark X and his model and the cover of the book having him.in Tacticus is addressed in the epilogue.

His gravis plate was wrecked by the end of the novel and the aforementioned Dreadnought Tech marine builds him a suit of artificer Tacitus plate as Harkus feels it fits Uriel's style of command better,.Harkus also modifies a bolter that belong to Lucian Ventris, Uriel's famed ancestor who was a hero of Tyranid invasion of Macragge to fit a Primaris Marine.

Also it seems the Ultramarines are starting to adopt a bit more of a late Roman aesthetic rather than the early Principate or Late Republic thing they had prior at least in terms of hair. Ventris is now described as having a noticeable beard. This is the 2nd Ultramarines Capt to grew one in recent books as Cato Sicarius is bearded as of Knights of Mac rage(Telion always had one). In the history of ancient Rome the late Republic and Principate eras the style for men was clean shaven later after the fall of the Julio-Claudians you start to see the statues and bas reliefs showing the Emperors and senior Roman officials with beards.

Finally got my hands on WH 464 (it was late to my store) and as one who has not read Vigilius Ablaze was there some interesting stuff, not just for the Fallen but also some crumbs of lore for the Unforgiven. The "Gallery of the Fallen" part show some nice covertions, many of which could be just as well be used for the Unforgiven or HH-era DA - or give you ideas for non-DA-successor Chapters with a knight, monk or lion theme - and some nice colour schemes.

Yeah it has great convertion stuff. Though they tended toward chaosy(they used the plastic Chaos marine legs and some of the backpacks)

The bits of lore are pretty good Just disappointed that they did not continue on from First of Fallen and give us some new stuff about what the Fallen are doing in the setting currently. Was hoping that since GW has been very adamant about moving the setting fowards, that they would have more than just the Fallen gathering in Nihilus still and have them doing something that either moves them more one wah or another.honestly hoping fora civil war amongst the fallen themselves with Luther and Cypher leading a group who wants redemption in the eyes of the Imperium and the Dark Angles and Astelan leading one that opposes them. There are hints that this is what they are setting up going all the way back to Angels of Darkness, Luther wants the Lion's forgiveness that's much is obvious and the Chaos gods apparently abandoned him immediately after he could not kill Jonson, with his madness apparently being a side effect of the way the watchers in the dark have kept him in stasis. This would also tie into cyohers actions over the years as it has become very obvious he is likely not Zahariel and very one of the senior Legion officers who stayed loyal to the Lion, whose canonical fate is currently unknown (compared to Redloss who we know was the 1st Supreme Grand Master after the Codex was adopted)

Working on Uriel ventris(I am a big fan of the character, he and the 4th company are the only Smurfs I like in the lore)

Used a spare Mark IV Helmet from one of the Heresy sets as I am not great at.faces and the one for Uriel was kinda of Derpy and did not look like the art. Tried a wash with Guilliman flesh contrast over retributor armor on the parts that are suppose to be gold., then a highlight of Retrinutor armor back on the high points of it to see get the gold pop a bit. The green on the cloak and crest is warpstone glow, darkened with Biel Tan green contrast as a wash, then highlighted on the raised edges with Warps tone. The trim on the pauldrons is just warpstone no wash to be brighter than the cloak. The Ultima was done in Screaming skullx because in like the look of the U in a bone white rather than a pure one. Bolter is eshing grey then 3 coats of nuln oil to give it a grey/black color rather than a pure black color

    Closer look.

I actually liked that, and beside the Fallen Champion on page 57 did those Fallen show that was created with CSM parts not really look Chaotic, and the suggestions given for how to use CSM-parts could easily be reused if you wanted to creat a Chapter with a more baroque feel, or give a feeling of them using older equipment.

Also, while we are talking the Dark Angels would I like to share a DA successor I created, it was just for some background exposition but as usual did I overdevelop it far beyond what I actually needed:

Marines Errantor (they are a canon Chapter but one of those name-and-nothing-more ones, and they only have been mentioned ones)
    + DA successors
+ honourably know their linage (Dark Angels) and founding (12th)
+ Their armour has red as the main colour, the Aquila/Imperialis, the power pack, shoulder plate trim, both knee guards and both feet are white.
    - 1th company are marked with saffron coloured robes or tabards, or saffron coloured Terminator armour
    - if made use the geometrical markings from the 30k WS transfer sheet.
+ Noble and heroic, but also arrogant and snobbish
+ proud of their lineage, declare it and their founding whenever they meet another Chapter and expect the other one to do the same
    - distrust and look down on those that don’t know their lineage and Founding. Unless of high repute do the Errantors expect a Chapter like that to differ to them.
    - distrust and look down on a little bit less those that don’t know their Founding but their linage. Unless of high repute do the Errantors expect a Chapter like that to differ to them.
    - will not fight alongside Chapters of the 13th or 21th Founding, or even interact pr coordinate with them if possible. If there is no choice will they do it through mediators if possible.
+ Chinese-ish, possibly with elements from Tibet and/or Korea. Not any Japanese-ish or Mongolian-ish elements.
    - Pos. insp.: Hwarang, Youxia,
    - Chinese names.
    + Fleetbased
    + Non/minimal angel-based bling or iconography
+ Keep themselves and their equipment clean.
+ Have lots of internal rituals

    Any thoughts or comments?

They need somgetting added to tie them to the Dark Angels, maybe sword based iconography since your saying minimal angel imagery, maybe incorporate a DAO in the chapter symbol. Because without somethimg from either the DA or Wings most would assume WS successor(which might explain why they are always announcing their lineage, lol)

    Otherwise sound great
