Could have him going right after Excalibur itself, even, if there's an Arthurian element to this one. Indy throwing the sword back into the water at the end of the film and catching a glimpse of the Lady of the Lake would be a great visual, actually.

I think Excalibur would be a really cool MacGuffin, I'm just curious how it would fit into the rumored Space Race plot we heard about a few weeks back. I also think it might be a little too close to the Holy Grail in Last Crusde. However...

...the idea of King Arthur's messianic return, a core part of the Arthur mythology, could be a really cool thing to see in the climax. I think we sometimes forget just how weird Indy's world is. The Jewish/Hebrew interpretation of a vengeful God of the Israelites coexists with both good and evil Hindu gods, Jesus, interdimensional aliens, and the scholarly accepted historicity of King Arthur.

They'd have to be careful to make it look different from the last scene of Excalibur, or all us Arthurian/Camelot fans will see it as a rip off.

An homage, if you will. ;)

God, Excalibur is so good though. Only just recently saw it for the first time.

I loved the religious aspects of the first 3 films, I loved that spooky feel of Raiders and TOD. Obviously Mangold isn't going to go full on The Omen, pity though, but returning to that would be something I'd prefer over aliens.

Exactly. This is why I could never wrap my head around the alien backlash. I genuinely believe a lot of it was fuelled by anti-Lucas sentiment, which was still rife in 2008.

The idea of going from 30's adventure serials to 50's alien films was a great idea, I thought. It could have been handled better, but I don't think the fault was in the idea. It does make me wonder what the tone of this new movie is going to be. I just can't imagine Indiana Jones in the 70s...

Late 60s, actually. Which I think is an important distinction, as the Moon landing wasn't til '69 and there have been some rumblings that that might be a sort of backdrop.

As for a 60s set Indy – well, Bond debuted then, so maybe a bit more of an espionage angle? Nazi remnants left over from WWII working out of a schlocky evil lair? A bit of Bond influence, given Indy's origins, would certainly bring things in a nice little loop, in that sense.

Having just rewatched fall four movies last week, I can attest to KotCS not being great. The aliens are the least of the problems, there are issues with that movie at every level. It’s not awful, there’s definitely redeemable stuff and at the end of the day… it’s an Indiana Jones movie, but I do agree that the “aLiEnS iN iNdIaNa JoNeS??” backlash was overblown. Like Jar Jar in The Phantom Menace, it’s singling out one issue instead of focusing on many.

It's a direct sequel to "Young Indiana Jones And The Phantom Train of Doom." They're taking the Halloween 2018 approach, pretending everything that took place in between "Phantom Train of Doom" and "Train of Death" never happened.

Didn't know about the Phantom Train of Doom - I've never seen the young Indy series.
